She gets a shout out in our song Giant Woman and you can find out more about her below Nanny of the Maroons was born in Ghana in 1686 as a member of the Ashanti people and kidnapped to Jamaica to work on sugar plantations as a slave. After escaping to the Blue Mountains with her brothers, Nanny was able to form Maroon communities, which intermarried with the indigenous Arawak people. From the mountains Nanny led and supported slave revolts, which liberated more enslaved people and strengthened the maroons’ troops. Although the town she founded, Nanny Town, was destroyed in the first Maroon War, Nanny was able to remain free and escape the colonial horrors of the British. Nanny was able to call on the spirits of her ancestors, as she was what Jamaicans refer to as an Obeah woman - someone with knowledge of plant medicines and other traditional practices rooted in Africa. Nanny of the Maroons is one of many countless individuals whose tireless and courageous battles against British plantation slavery led to its eventual downfall. You can find stories like hers on every island of the Caribbean... I always loved it, but I think I took part in my first race around 2009. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD GO BACK AND TELL YOURSELF WHEN YOU FIRST STARTING RUNNING, THAT YOU HAVE NOW LEARNED? Pace really doesn’t matter. There will be people faster than you, there will be people slower than you. Even you own pace fluctuates over time. Just enjoy the journey. WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION/MOTIVATION? I love the running community on Instagram, there are so many inspiring people. After 3 years i finally decide to have a monthly show on Kiosk Radio. During my Black Gravity rhythm show, i’ll highlighting the eternal and fundamental connection between contemporary music and its rich blooming history. Black Gravity rhythms is a show, where i will focus around percussions, breaks and rhythm’s. Black gravity rhythmd is a show where i will invite guest. Black Gravity is derived from Herbie Hancock’s 2001 Black Gravity track on his Future 2 Future album. This particular track lays the foundation for my pcoming shows. I love the perfect combination of herbie’s keyboard and drumcomputer played by a guy called gerald. The way how they play with the sounds is the way how i see my future shows. Alongside Herbie Hancock’s track i also know gravity as a natural phenomenon, at @sankofa_rhythms_records i see gravity as an invisible and intangible force which brings people with love for percussions and rhythm’s together. My favorite drummer has died. Tony Allen. I have not processed it at all and dont usually jump to posting on social media after something this heavy happens, but I feel the immediate need to write, in order to process my feelings about him and outwardly express how important a figure he was in music. Tony Allen was a humble giant, whose otherworldly musicality has lifted our little world to a higher place. The universe was in his drumming. His drumming possessed history, it contained spirits, it communicated messages. A musical instrument, when wielded with a certain magical ability and intention, becomes a kind of weapon, a unique vessel through which we understand humanity and see ourselves in ways that words cannot describe. It forms a direct line starting from the player’s heart, moving through their entire physical and emotional body, and jumps out onto someone else. Tony harnessed that power, and he had it all the time, with every single note he played. Tony Allen was the prime example of a drummer’s ability to harness the magic of music. One of the things I admired most about Tony was his quiet yet thunderous presence, on the drums and off. When he played the drums, he was so calm and effortless that he barely looked like he was moving a muscle. Do you know how rare that is, for a drummer? As a bandleader (Fela’s and otherwise) he let the band play their hearts out while also having them wrapped around his finger, ready to smack the snare drum at any moment to cue a dynamic shift, reigning everyone in. Tony taught us that drummers have all the power, if they choose to accept it - but that doesn’t mean they need to be tyrants. One of the lessons we should take from Tony Allen is that drummers can and should be the bandleader, even if they aren’t the frontperson. (Continued in comments) - @instamiles on Instagram

Following the murder of a young woman named Pinar Gültekin by her boyfriend, Turkish women started posting B&W photos to suggest that any one of us could be the next picture in a newspaper, the next terrible statistic. Did you know that the Turkish government is trying to abolish elements of the the Istanbul Convention, a human rights treaty that protects women again domestic violence? Per the @nytimes, B&W beauty shots have been used for various “awareness” campaigns in recent years, but this issue resonates so strongly in our current climate of violence-as-the-solution, and I don’t want it to get lost. This week we chat with @sgollishruns, one of Canada’s most decorated competitive runners. Sasha opens up about the impact her parents had on her childhood and ultimately her decision to quit her job to pursue a career as a professional runner. At an early age, Sasha grew up on a healthy diet of sports, which included field hockey, cross country running, nordic skiing, downhill skiing, swimming, water polo, and track and field. By the time she entered the University of Toronto, Sasha fell out of love with running and ultimately applied to the University of Western to pursue a degree in Engineering. Thankfully, Sasha would return to the sport and hasn’t looked back! We’ll also cover Sasha’s incredible running resume, which includes her dominating performance at the 2015 CIS Championships, her views on women in sports, and the truly inspiring work she’s doing in the community to uplift women. Muttermodus. Bevor ich schwanger wurde, dachte ich, dass mit der Empfängnis ein hormonbedingter Schalter im Körper umgelegt wird, der den Muttermodus startet. Vollautomatisch würde ich so werden wie die gelassen lächelnden Mütter aus der Werbung: mit völlig unzerknitterter Kleidung, instant Geborgenheit inklusive. Ich dachte, dass ich ja auf jeden Fall schon ganz gute Anlagen mitbringe für die Mutterschaft, den Rest macht dann der Hormonrausch. Schließlich singe und koche ich gern, kann toll ausgedachte Geschichten erzählen und Fackeln aus altem Wachs und Stöckern bauen. Die Begeisterung für Apfelkuchen backen und Bastelarbeiten kommt automatisch, dachte ich. Dann wurde ich schwanger und es passierte… nichts. Ich bin auch mit Kind noch genau der Mensch, der ich vorher war. Ich habe jetzt halt eine Tochter. Mein Leben hat sich ganz schön verändert, aber ich bin noch die Gleiche. Ich stehe nicht plötzlich Apfelkuchen backend in der Küche und mit „super einfachen“ Bastelanleitungen kann man mich nach wie vor bis nach Timbuktu jagen. Mindestens. Nur, weil ich ein Kind habe, muss ich nicht plötzlich diese Bilder erfüllen, die Werbung und Erwartungen anderer unhinterfragt in meinen Kopf gebaut haben. Ich bin weiterhin chaotisch, die Haare liegen selten und ich finde kalte Pizza zum Frühstück nach wie vor eine valide Option. Auch nach fünf Jahren Mutterschaft kann ich noch nicht einmal einen Knopf annähen, und meine Flechtfrisuren sind immer schief. Ich merke mir keinen einzigen Geburtstag, nicht mal meinen eigenen, und finde nichts ermüdender, als an stundenlangen Rollenspielen mit Plastikponys teilnehmen zu müssen. Mein Muttermodus ist nichts anderes, als einfach ich selbst zu sein. Mit Kind. Denn für meine Tochter ist ganz selbstverständlich alles, was ich tue, durch und durch mütterlich. Ich bin ihr vertraut, ich bin ihre Bezugsperson. Und als diese muss ich kein künstliches Bild von Geborgenheit aufrechterhalten. Ich bin die Geborgenheit für mein Kind. [General Updates & GoFundMe Announcement @ 12pm] A lot is going on, and I mean a lot. The label has been quiet for the better half of the year. Mostly due to the exploration of a new sound and direction, weve had to gut things and adapt. The downside to it all is no matter how hard Ive tried to be consistent, 9 to 5 work would drain me, collaborations would fall-through, and the pandemic has reset our priorities. The upside is well; we got new music coming in the forth-quarter of 2020, and I decided to drop our first zine highlighting the incubation phase of the label. When we were a lot younger, Left-N-Right Records originally started as Loaner Life, a collective of black musicians, Djs, photographers, and journalists spanning from Richmond, Oakland, and San Fransisco. We banded together rather organically, with the main commonality of all being YR Media (Youth Radio) interns and employees besides a few who visited anyway during work hours lol. Looking back at the photos I developed from that era; I decided to compile them into a more significant project that highlighted a shift in the emergence of Downtown-Oaklands Art Scene. Pressing isnt cheap, so Ill be dropping a GoFundMe link in my bio today at 12pm to crowdfund a graphic designer, printing materials, and lock in some new camera equipment. Yes, biking half the elevation of Everest (4442m) on dirt does require physical fitness, but equally as important is the mental approach too. Harnessing brain power to overcome fatigue takes practice and experience to dig deep, stay positive, and believe in yourself that you can do it. @kiwibradshaw did the FULL Everest and then some (9639m) on a mountain bike and I’m still in awe of his achievement and the mentality required to accomplish this! 🧠🚀💥 Endurance challenges like these only make you stronger for the next adventure.
