Recently Ive kind of been the medical equivalent of gap filler. Victorian hospitals are having huge numbers of staff being furloughed - meaning because theyve had exposure to COVID-19, they have to go and isolate for 2 weeks. This means huge staff shortages so Ive been filling the gaps where I can. Healthcare workers are stressed and working outside of their comfort zone. One hospital I was in had their palliative care ward turned into a ward with COVID patients on it requiring serious intervention measures. The full PPE kit is pretty damn awful to wear so it gives me great comfort to walk out onto the street and see everyone wearing a mask. Hang in there Victorians 🧡 - @gordimusic on Instagram

It can be itchy or even burn.⠀⠀ ⠀ HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE IT?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 It can look like acne or rosacea & the differences are subtle. I recommend seeing a board-certified dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis.⠀ ⠀⠀ WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ✨ Like most things in dermatology, it’s complicated & we don’t exactly know why. It can be triggered by irritation from fluorinated toothpaste, topical steroids or ingredients in personal care products.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 There is evidence that your skin barrier function, cutaneous immune system, microflora, and follicular bacteria can play a role.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 😃 GOOD NEWS: Its not contagious!⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 😫 BAD NEWS: Its chronic and comes and goes. Theres no magic cure, but there are many good medications that can help.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⚠️ RULE #1, #2, and #3: DO NOT PUT TOPICAL STEROIDS ON IT.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 This is the biggest mistake I see patients make. They will put topical steroids they have at home on it, which will temporarily improve it. Then, the rash will come back with a vengeance. Topical steroids are a no-no, it will flare you and make the rash worse.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ OK, SO HOW DO YOU TREAT IT?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 Switch to a non-fluorinated toothpaste & using a gentle skincare regimen (no scrubbing) can help.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 👉 Most people do need prescription medications, like topical or oral antibiotics, or topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory creams to manage this.
