This is a song that Chad is singing for me and now, us. I was making a demo and couldnt do the high notes justice on a couple songs so I asked Chad if he could help me out. (Its probably not a stretch of the imagination to hear that Chad has an amazing singing voice.) At that time,around 2001, we had just finished touring with the seminal hip hop theater play, Rhyme Deferred which was originally conceived of by @kamilahf as a senior project @howard1867! Chad asked me to help him create the music for his one man show, Red Clay and Carved Concrete which we performed together onstage for a run during the 3rd??? Annual NYC Hip Hop Theater Festival back around 2002??? Anyhow, Ive played this song for maybe a dozen people over the years and I dont think many of his good friends have heard this. @tanehisipcoates Im not sure if I even gave him a copy because this was just a crappy demo. But his singing always brought a smile to my face and hopefully now to yours too. @chadwickboseman Im so honored to have been your friend. Today I get to celebrate you; my best friend, my sister, my confidant, my Syd Whit!! This year doesnt only signify you entering the last year of your roaring twenties, its also our 10th year of friendship and sisterhood 😁! Wow a whole decade of dealing with you lol. . . I get emotional just thinking about our journeys throughout the years. From meeting you on the lawn of Carter to practically living in each others dorm room at Wade. I dont know what exactly brought us together, because to the naked eyes were as opposite as Cali and Jersey lol. Im just glad that we became friends. Youve changed me in ways youre not aware of. . . Youve thought me how to be a loving person. Youre so intentional about making others feel love. You literally bake cupcakes and write sweet notes for your friends just because! Like who does that 😂😂. Youre so quick to forgive others. You find happiness in the simplest things. You allow your inner child to flourish and you dont care about others opinions. For a person whos childhood was taken early, it blows my mind and I celebrate it. Theres a peace in it that youve taught me. When YOD got hard for me, you were my encouragement. Youve taught me not to hate my femininity as much as I did. You thought me how to smile without a care. Youve soften me throughout the years. The list goes on. I often have to compartmentalize myself but Syd you get the complete package (maybe too much 😂) and Ive never felt judged. In 10 years weve never fought, got mad at, argue with each other (many debates though lol), or allowed drama in our space, thats a blessing (lets keep it that way)! .Weve prayed through some dark times. Weve cried through heartbreaks. Weve celebrated our wins. We testified of our victories. Even through the long distance and crazy time zones were closer then ever. Youre a phenomenal woman Syd Whit! Im not one to voice my opinions on social media, I rarely post my work but I wanted to after some reflection. One post cannot and will not reflect a lifetime of harboured emotions. Those who know me personally or have met me in social/working environments have heard my thoughts and feelings concerning the blatant inequality faced by black people. It saddens me to see people post with no consideration to the actual issue, for some people this is just a quick repost. What is the point of posting without the exercise of genuine care, consideration and implementation of change in your day to day life? We should all actively address racism even when there isnt an audience. Ive witnessed some of the most well intended people make the most outrageous remarks. I choose not to repeat it as I dont want to give it power. It is not my responsibility as a black woman to inform white people and educate them about racism. We all have access to the internet and books exist. Since reading Why Im no longer talk to white people about rsce (By Reni Eddo-Lodge) it has given me so much clarity. Im speaking to all my black followers in particular, we as black people have contributed so much to this world. Most of it has been hidden and we cant expect the same people/system to teach us our own history when they have often stolen and taken credit for. I make a point of supporting black owned businesses as much as possible. Group economics is important, this is something I stress to my friends and family. I will comprise another post listing some of the black owned businesses I love. Im grateful to have the support of incredible friends, clients and peers, I appreciate how having a great network has allowed me become who I am today. Ive wanted to quit many times,even in recent times but Ive been reminded I have a duty to share knowledge. I love being black and I shouldnt have to minimize my voice to be socially accepted in a white dominated environment. I dont want sympathy, I just want to live without fear.
