The Forbidden City, located in Beijing, is the palatial heart of China. Constructed in 1420, during the early Ming Dynasty, it is Chinas best-preserved imperial palace. The largest imperial palace in the world took about 14 years to build by approximately 1 million workers, which included 100000 craftsmen. It has 980 buildings in over 70 palace compounds, with over 8,700 rooms. It is 961 meters long from south to north and 753 meters wide. This palace was home to 14 emperors of the Ming dynasty and 10 of the Qing dynasty. * In ancient times, the emperor was believed to be a son of Heaven and therefore supreme power of Heaven was said to be bestowed upon him. Thus the residence of the celestial emperor was considered divine and certainly forbidden to ordinary people. The palace premises was accessible strictly by the families and servants of the emperors, while the commoners were forbidden.
