Ever heard of the term toxic positivity ? Do you know even positivity can be dangerous ? There is no denying that we all are on a lookout for a little sunshine in our lives, no matter how things are going on. If you are someone who is battling anxiety and depression, even an ounce of positivity can do wonders in your life and get you through the day. But forcing your mind to be “positive” or quotes like “positivity vibes only” can do more harm than good. A normal human being feels all the emotions be it negative or positive. No one can be positive all the time. Being positive all the time means you are denying or ignoring other emotions to be happy. And that can actually lead to a negative mind. “Everything will be fine.” “Stay positive! It could be wrose” This kind of encouragement and self talk is so common that it oversimplifies the human brain and how we process emotions, and it can actually be detrimental to our mental health. “You can fight toxic positivity by acknowledging or recognising that multiple complex emotions can exist in you all at once.” Check out the image above on how to avoid toxic positivity. Meet Helen Popinchalk, a LUCAD screenprinting professor and the faculty highlight of the month! Helen completed her undergrad at Simmons in Studio Art and Administration, and her graduate at UMass Dartmouth. She is the cofounder of Trifecta Editions, which works with local artists like Greg Lamarsh and Farel Dalrymple. She also created a show called Go to the Light, featuring a collection of artists whose prints are focused on neon and fluorescent inks lit by black-lights (this will be shown at the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly on October 29, check it out!). According to Helen, its common for people not to realize the work that goes into getting an image onto the paper with screen printing. It is very process oriented, and the finished product doesnt always express that in the same way a painting might. New to Lesley, Helen says her favorite thing about working here is hands down the students, and their genuine enthusiasm for their artwork and for learning the processes. Stephanie Holmes has been pushing the boundaries of the New York comedy scene for more than a decade, and has twice been named one of the 10 funniest comics at the New York Comedy Festival. She’s also participated in the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, the She Devil Festival, the Maine Comedy Festival, Solocom, and Queercom. As a headliner, she’s been featured at Caroline’s for the “Breakout Artist Series” and at the People’s Improv Theater for “The PIT Presents.” Opening for some amazing comics — including Jim Norton, Alonzo Bodden, and Jackie Kashian — she’s performed all over the U.S. At the Peoples Improv Theater (The PIT) she has performed in the shows Welcome to Hell, played Biff in the 80s time-travel musical with the Unauthorized Musical Series, and directed the annual production of Rocky Horror. It has been an incredible journey.⁠ ⁠ We had an amazing first festival selling out the Bob Bullock History Museum. What an incredible experience to see that many people interested in Texas Whiskey.⁠ ⁠ The second festival was even better with a new venue, more distilleries, and people. The weather was absolutely beautiful, and the people were happy. ⁠ ⁠ The 3rd Annual Festival happened the week before the lockdown, so I am lucky and grateful I could share that experience with everyone. A week later and there would not have been a festival. ⁠ ⁠ The pandemic has been hard on many businesses and industries, including our distilleries and events. It has and is a virtual event palooza.⁠ ⁠ With that being said, we are working diligently on bringing you an in-person 4th Annual Texas Whiskey Festival this spring. Yes, we have received tons of feedback and suggestions, and yes, it is all being considered. Well, maybe not all of it. She began her financial career over 34 years ago at major financial firms Bear Stearns and Smith Barney on their trading floors in equities and municipal bond trading. Kathleen was also FINRA Series 7 & 63 Registered Financial Advisor at AG Edwards prior to her move to sunny South Florida in 1994 where she worked at a fixed income arbitrage hedge fund trading interest rate derivatives for over 17 years. She then made the transition to residential mortgage lending in 2012 and has thoroughly enjoyed helping all her clients achieve the dream of homeownership. Waterman State Bank is a Federally Chartered Bank based out of IL and family owned since 1981. Kathleen is a partner in Waterman Acquisition Group which purchased Waterman State Bank in January of 2020. Feel free to ask questions in the comments if you have any that weren’t answered in the Q&A. Q&A ⏺ What’s your FIRE story? I reached my financial independence (FI) after saving $500k at the age of 25. In determining my FI number, I planned to spend $10-15k a year which would be 30-50x expenses. I can live on that money the rest of my life but if my situation changes I have no problem changing my number. I’m 32, single without kids (SINK), frugal and a minimalist, living on less with few expenses or possessions. I prefer a lifestyle that is simple and flexible and value relationships and experiences over money and stuff. ⏺ How did you retire so young? I had a 90%+ savings rate, high income, and was tax efficient. I made money as an internet entrepreneur then invested that money into the stock market which doubled my net worth. I contributed to retirement accounts and held stocks for over a year to minimize taxes. ⏺ What does your situation look like today? Has anything changed? Since reaching FI, I’ve diversified into real estate while continuing to invest in stocks. Aside from owning instead of renting I’m living a pretty similar lifestyle as I did prior to FI. I spend about $10k a year on my basic needs. The rest of my spending is on travel. ⏺ How has life changed after reaching FI? To put the news stories in context, we first have to be clear that there is no such thing as a “child prostitute” or “minor prostitute”. By law, underage victims cannot consent to sexual acts. Hi! I’m Matt Roberts, General Manager of the agency Jeff Roberts & Associates. I’ve been married to my wonderful wife Heather for 11 years and our “children” at the moment are two French Bulldogs, three cats and whatever stray animal we end up taking in.⁠ ⁠ When booking a tour, our agency will utilize ticket data, radio hot spots, social media hot spots, tour grosses and prior market history to ensure that where we tour will be setup as best as possible. Juggling those elements and striving to balance them perfectly against a set number of available dates is the goal, but hard to do. We not only run into anomalies like traffic from other tours, but we’re also working around high school football schedules or other substantial regional events. Once we define the “anchor” markets that bolster a weekend, we begin pursuing the routing events, which will assist us in efficiently getting from point A to point B. ⁠ ⁠ After all of that has been approved by the manager and artist, we then work alongside whomever the partner may be in the given situation: major radio stations, theaters, performing art centers, arenas, professional promoters or in some cases churches to construct the specifics of the offer. The offer will detail ticket prices, the way each ticket price will scale (this is where ticket history is helpful), and finally the expenses to put the event together. Again, in a perfect world all of these pieces balance properly without any issues. However, striking the balance of expenses vs the show gross is necessary to ensure the event can be profitable for both the artist and the promoter. Expenses that are too high force prices beyond the averages needed to produce the best result in that room/venue (i.e. sold out).⁠ ⁠ While being an agency in 2020 has been met with many unique challenges, it’s still an exciting and ever-changing environment to work within. God has taught our team so much, certainly trusting his timing, provision and plan.
