Examination found thin, red-brown rhomboidal plaques with adherent scale on anterior legs bilaterally and no other skin involvement. Review of systems was positive for chronic dyspnea on exertion. These thunderstorms are moving towards the southeast. As Hurricane Isaias draws closer to the U.S. mainland, USGS coastal change experts predict that wind-driven waves are very likely to cause some erosion at the base of the dunes along about 11 percent of Atlantic Coast sandy beaches between Florida and Virginia. The most extensive effects are predicted in Georgia, where 23 percent of sandy coastal beaches are very likely to be eroded by storm waves. However, only one percent of the region’s beaches are predicted to be overtopped by storm waves and none are predicted to be inundated, or completely submerged. This prediction can help local emergency management officials make decisions about which areas to evacuate, where and when to close coastal roads, and where to position clean-up equipment in advance of the storm. ▫️ The prediction is based on the USGS Coastal Change Forecast model, which has been in use since 2011 and is continually being improved. The model starts with inputs from the National Hurricane Center’s storm surge predictions and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wave forecast models. The USGS model adds detailed information about the forecast region’s beach slope and dune height to produce its predictions. A map of the coastal change forecasts for Hurricane Isaias is at http://ow.ly/K5zu50AOdDC. The maps have three strips, side by side. The strip closest to the coast shows the likelihood of erosion at the base of the dunes. Twitter is where I talk about science the most. I share the latest updates there and debunk the myths that keep circulating, created and promoted by those who oppose climate action. . The latest myth, though, is so bad and so widespread that I figured I’d share it here too. . Devastating wild fires are still burning large areas of California and the West Coast. . But people have been sharing maps of US fires like this first one, claiming that they show there are no fires in Canada – so somehow that means that the fires in the US are exaggerated or started by climate activists trying to prove climate change is real or ... something?! . The truth is simple: US maps only show US data. Of course there are wildfires across the border right now - as you can see from the second map from Natural Resources Canada. . British Columbia isn’t having as bad a wildfire season as the western US this year, but 2018 was a record season for them, and 2019 was a record season for Alaska. And remember the record-setting Australian bushfires? Those were just this past January. . Where does climate change come into it? . Most wildfires in the lower 48 states are the result of accidental human ignition (only 7% are deliberate arson) and most wildfires in Canada and Alaska are the result of lightning. . But climate change is increasing the area burned by wildfire, by drying out the vegetation. The last figure shows how the area burned by wildfire has more than doubled since the 1980s as a result of a warmer, drier climate. . Imagine throwing a match on a pile of green wood. What happens? . Then imagine throwing a match on a pile of bone dry kindling. What happens? . That’s the difference climate change makes, regardless of whether a fire is ignited by lightning or human causes. . Unfortunately, those events occurred 3-4 times in the past to many residing ashore. . Spotted Lake: In winter and spring, the lake located northwest of Osoyoos in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley looks just like any other body of water. But as most of the water starts to evaporate in summer, hundreds of huge briny pools are left behind, leaving a polka-dotted landscape of yellow, green and blue spots.The colorful pools are the result of a high concentration of minerals, including calcium, sodium sulphates and magnesium sulphate that have collected in the water. The minerals and a collection of salts have run off from surrounding hills. The various colors depend on the concentration of minerals in each pool. Spotted Lake has been considered a sacred place for centuries by the indigenous people of the Okanagan Nation, according to the British Columbia Visitor Centre. They believed that each of the different circles had different healing and medicinal properties. The lake was originally known to the First Nations of the Okanagan Valley as Kliluk. First Nations tribe was able to purchase the land. Welcome to Elanda Point 🌳 Located in Queensland, 2 hours north of Brisbane, this area was revegetated with more than 100,000 native trees between 2003 and 2007. With the aim of taking climate action and restoring biodiversity, a variety of native tree species were planted as a part of this project. These included Queensland Brush box (Lophostemon confertus), Broad-leaved Paperbark (Melaleuca quinquinervia) and Turpentine Tree (Syncarpia glomulifera). As this forest grows it is capturing carbon from the atmosphere and providing habitat for the local wildlife. Many birds now call the forest home including the Noisy Friarbird and Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo. Over its lifetime, this forest will capture more than 46,000 tonnes of CO2-e from the atmosphere. A broad low pressure system located over the eastern Florida Panhandle is producing disorganized shower activity. The low is forecast to move southward to southwestward and emerge over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico later today. However, what is currently being witnessed is not a new phenomenon. Similar fleets, although often not as large, have visited the Galapagos in the past. Although the fleet is legally, and officially, targeting squid and tuna in international waters, there are undoubtedly, and possibly intentionally, going to be huge numbers of other bycatch species effected. One of the fleets mother-ships was found to have hundreds of tonnes of illegally caught sharks on board in 2017. Recently, the Chinese government have announced it will start a three month fishing ban in the region...but not until September... Week 11 of MappingAtoZ: Kevo, Finland 🇫🇮 There hasn’t been an easier letter to pick a place for than K... Kevo Research Station Now this may seem like a pretty random choice to most, but for the few who have had the chance to visit know it’s magic. For me, Kevo was a place for research, albeit amateur. It was the study area of my undergrad dissertation. Spending a couple of weeks trudging though 4ft of snow, collecting data on the snow pack and the environment over, certainly left me with a lot of memories. I wasn’t sure how to represent this unique arctic environment, the map I settled on was ‘My Journey’ across this valley. Over seven days I spanned the valley collecting data at 65 locations, these are my transects and their elevation profiles between the 6th and 12th March 2016. I tried to work on some styling here that shows the routes fading into the white snowy hilltops and cutting over the icy lake surface. The company purchased 3,712 acres between the Gulf of Mexico and what is now known as Naples Bay for $11,136, or $3 an acre. Collier County was established in 1923. Roads and other essential infrastructures were established in the 1920s that helped shape Naples into the city it is today: Electric power was introduced in 1926. Rail service reached Naples in 1927. The famous Tamiami Trail connecting Tampa to Miami and passing through Naples was completed in 1928. Today the city is home to more than 30,000 permanent residents and Naples is the principal city of the Naples-Marco Island area. In addition to golf and shopping, Naples is known today for its breathtaking beaches. Cambios del Glaciar Universidad, San Fernando, región de OHiggins, Chile. El Gl. Universidad es uno de los glaciares más extensos de Chile central, alcanzando ~28 km2 y ~10 km de largo. Su nombre fue colocado por el glaciólogo francés Louis Libroutry en honor a la Universidad de Chile. Dicha casa de estudios alojó a Lliboutry y le brindó las facilidades para desarrollar estudios de glaciares a lo largo de Chile. Lliboutry es conocido como uno de los padres de la glaciología moderna. Además escribió uno de los primeros tratados de glaciología titulado nieve y glaciares de Chile (1956). En la parte superior de la imagen está el glaciar Universidad en el 2016. La imagen es de Google Earth. En la parte inferior está la fotografía más antigua del glaciar hasta ahora conocida. Esa fotografía fue tomada por la fuerza aérea de los Estados Unidos en el invierno chileno de 1944. Las puntas de flecha de colores marcan puntos se referencia en las imágenes para así dimensionar los cambios en el hielo en el tiempo. También por el valle del Gl. Universidad bajo parte del equipo de rugbistas uruguayos que cayó en la cordillera en 1972. Tengo la suerte de que el Gl. ¿Recuerdan a Kai y a Chely? Ambas tortugas fueron liberadas el pasado 2 de septiembre cerca de Cueva del Indio en Arecibo. Ambas tortugas tienen un transmisor adherido a su caparazón y de esa manera podemos monitorearlas. Esta información obtenida por la señal emitida al sistema satelital nos ayuda saber no solo sus patrones de movimiento, sino también saber si han visitado zonas de alimentación o si algo anda mal. ¿A que nos referimos con el si algo anda mal? Podemos saber si la tortuga se encuentra en la orilla mucho tiempo (fuera de lo normal), o si por mano humana fue removida de su hábitat, indicándonos el lugar en donde se encuentra. Aqui pueden ver el mapa de sus movimientos desde el día de liberación. Chely (tortuga verde) es los puntos verdes y Kai (tortuga carey) los amarillos. Qué nítido, ¿verdad? Reconocemos el excelente trabajo de nuestro equipo de rescate, veterinario, manutención y voluntariado en el cuidado de estas tortugas, y el extraordinario trabajo del técnico Edward Hernández en el monitoreo posterior a la liberación interpretando el loco mundo de ARGOS y la telemetría satelital.
