Today in Black History: Otis Redding, one of the greatest American soul singers/songwriters, was born on this day in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. Redding was raised in Macon, where he started singing at a young age and was influenced by musicians such as Sam Cooke and Little Richard. His breakthrough into soul music came when Redding drove to Memphis, Tennessee with Johnny Jenkins and the Pinetoppers for a recording session at Stax Records in 1962. The Stax co-owner Jim Stewart allowed Otis to cut a few songs at the end of the recording session. The result was “These Arms of Mine”, which released that same year and launched his career. This was the first of many hit singles (including “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Respect,” and “Try a Little Tenderness) and his open-throated, emotional style and powerful singing became the measure of the decades great soul artists. In December of 1967, Redding and four members of his band were killed when their chartered plane crashed into a Wisconsin lake. He was only 26 years old. Shortly before his death, he recorded his number one hit single “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” which shot to the top of the charts. This September marks 49 years since the Attica State Prison massacre—one of the largest prison insurrections in history. From September 9th-13th, 1971, incarcerated men took control of the yard at Attica and demanded basic human living conditions and civil rights. They drafted a list of demands and summoned observers to facilitate negotiations. However, their peaceful attempts were shut down when the state responded with force. Police and correction officers assaulted and killed many incarcerated men and guards, and the state sent helicopters dropping tear gas. 43 people were killed. Today, as we honor the lives lost, lets remember that the same racist violence and inhumane conditions that fueled the uprising continue in jails and prisons today. Leaders continue to see the lives of people behind bars as expendable—and we must fight to change this. #tbt In 1990 I wrote the song #leavethegunsathome with @greg_phillinganes_live which we then recorded with Al Green @royalstudiosmemphis in Memphis. Willie Mitchel was there and helped keep the 24 track rolling when it seemed to be lagging. ( that’s a whole other story). But when we released the track in 1991 Al and I got the opportunity to meet up with James Brady, Reagan’s press press secretary who had been paralyzed in the Reagan’s assassination attempt and later started an organization that wrote and helped pass the Brady Bill. We met with him in Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church after having breakfast @sylviassoulfoodbrand - can you imagine having breakfast there with Al Green?? Line out the door. Just wanted to big up @bradybuzz who continue the work of James Brady to this day. Hopefully I’ll have some new info re the song soon. - @arthurhbaker on Instagram
