I wanted Noah to attend the vigil tonight in PDX for George Floyd to show solidarity with Minneapolis, but he didn’t want to go. When I picked him up afterwards, I brought him this sign from the vigil and he expressed to me that he didn’t want to go because he was scared and worried that the police would show up and things would get dangerous for the people. But he understands the message of the sign and supports the movement and wants people to know what he stands for. Noah’s a half Black, half East Indian 10yr old with albinism and everytime another Black life is murdered at the hands of the police, I think of him first. I think about how he was born with a rare disease that affects 1 and 20k people in the US, one that allows him the ability to appear white...which, in-turn, could essentially save his life one day. I think about the fact that so many others do not have this ability and are instead targets simply for the color of their skin. Targets to racist and hateful ass people that value power over other human lives like the cops that murdered George Floyd. Racism is power, white supremacy is terrorism...this country was built on it and you should be sick of it. I’m so sad and angry lately, but I’m taking comfort in Noah and his honesty and strength and love that he shows me everyday. I’m hugging him extra tight and his father and I are teaching him to fight racism and white supremacy because his life matters, George’s life mattered, Black lives matter♥️ - @_nishafox_ on Instagram

As we enter the month of June in South Africa, we remember and honour the youth of South Africa who died for our freedom. Annually, WCTA has held grassroots tournaments to honour those who paved the way and gave their lives for a democratic South Africa. These are uncertain times we live in but one thing we are certain of...WCTA has never ever forgotten that we play our sport in a democratic society because it was hard fought for. Never forget. #wcta #grassroots #🔴⚪🔵 #islandersahoo - @western_cape_touch on Instagram

2019.11.02: Anne Barreto (@annebarreto4) When I was in middle school I grew my hair out. It was 1998 and Cash Money Records inked their deal with Universal Records. I had already been obsessed with No Limit, but CMR took my love of that New Orleans rap sound to the next level. I ripped the story of their $30million deal out of The Source magazine and taped the pages to my locker. The pictures were fire but I idolized those guys making it. Lil’ Wayne was my guy (he had braids). . . . My hair became an important part of my identity. I sort of relied on it as a signal even though I hated the process. My mom would say, “I thought I avoided hair by having a boy.” Every 2 or 3 weeks, she’d unbraid, wash and comb my hair while we sat in front of the TV watching some Lifetime movie. It was so painful when the comb came out - I was “tender-headed.” For a day or two, I’d take my hair to school as an Afro or in two Mickey Mouse puffs. White kids at school couldn’t resist the opportunity to touch my hair without asking. . . . It would culminate in my homegirl Ola or the African shop braiding it back up. Hours of chair time half asleep. Story time over - it dawned on me about the cycle of pride and identity that is so natural, and intuitive as a Black man or woman. Other races and ethnicities take pride in their appearance, I’m just speaking for my experience. There is this spoken and unspoken reflex of the importance of hair in our community. Getting a haircut with a barber is no different (less painful and less time consuming) than the commitment to getting hair braided or weave put in. It’s all a sacred tradition and it’s unique to us in a way only we can understand. No thesis here. I admire the process and story around Black hair and Black beauty. - @bybridges on Instagram
