Coaching Athletes is one of the greatest experiences of my life. I took over Harvard Westlake H.S. in Los Angeles as a 25 year old battling with self-esteem, confidence, identity, social pressures, and happiness. And found out pretty quickly that high schoolers are going through a lot of the same! In going through the journey together, we both truly learned from one another, grew together, and made some pretty special bonds. When I took over the program, the school had never won a playoff game, and that first year we won the Los Angeles Championship. We all won awards, but more than anything, it was the most special experience of my life because it showed what people are capable of if we choose to truly believe in ourselves, lift one another up, and relentlessly commit to our goals. I’ve been fortunate to go off and compete in American Ninja Warrior, play in the World Championships of Lacrosse, and Speak internationally about all of this. Years later, I still think about my 6 years coaching lacrosse very often - if not daily haha. And I think it’s because I know what it feels like to not believe in yourself. There was a time in college where I was going through a really rough patch and I didn’t deal with it. It didn’t go away. It just robbed me of a year of my life. I don’t want any player to ever feel that way. I still go through issues with self-esteem, confidence, identity, social pressures, and happiness — but I’ve definitely picked up some tools along the way that have helped me, and I hope they can help you or someone in your life. I’ve been coaching more athletes privately on the Human element of their sport. And this is me publicly saying it in hopes of helping more people. I love Athletes so much. What happened to Tyron Woodley’s Rib? ••••••••••••••••••••••••• Former champ @twooodley returned to the cage last night against nemesis @colbycovmma . In the 5th round Twood attempted a guillotine to counter a takedown from Covington. Covington was able to clear his neck land a body shot which stopped the former champ due to intense pain. What happened to his rib? Why did he have to stop? . Woodley revealed to @arielhelwani that he suffered a rib fracture. Apparently the rib had popped earlier in the fight and when he tried to stand back up with the guillotine attempt it popped again. . Most common mechanism of injury for rib fractures are chest trauma, such as impact during contact sports. In the case of this fight it may have occurred during a takedown. Any rib trauma may have been exacerbated by Woodley’s choke attempt which is commonly finished with an intense oblique crunch (combined spine flexion and lateral flexion). . Rib fractures are incredibly painful however they generally resolve with conservative care. Bone healing typically takes 6-8 weeks if there is no complications. . Congrats to the Heat for making the NBA Finals but I don’t think there is a chance Miami could beat the Lakers (I will take my L if they do). Out of the 3 teams (Heat, Celtics and Raptors), I genuinely think the Raptors match up the best against the Lakers. Here are my breakdown of these 3 teams against the Lakers: - Heat: They have the least talented roster out of the three but the culture is what allowed them to be so successful in the playoffs. Matchup wise, I think Bam will do a good job defending AD. He’s the perfect AD stopper in my opinion but besides him, no one can guard AD. The Lakers really like to put two big men on the court at the same time so this small ball Heat lineup won’t be good. If Bam comes off the bench, the Heat will have trouble guarding the Lakers big. Kelly Olynyk is not going to get the job done. LeBron and Jimmy Butler should have a good series. Both will most likely guard each other. In order for the Heat to have the chance against the Lakers, they really need the bench to step up big and hope they can shut down both AD and LeBron - Celtics: They are the most talented but they lack the culture. They don’t really have a leader like Jimmy or Lowry. It really makes me laugh when I see Marcus Smart chucking 3s in the clutch when Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Kemba Walker are in the game. Also Daniel Theis can’t guard AD so series is already over from there. Kemba has to be Boston’s best or second best player for the Celtics in order for them to have any chance of beating the Lakers. - Raptors: This team is built perfectly to beat the Lakers. They have the defenders and play with a gritty mentality. The Raptors swept the Lakers in the regular season so that is a good sign. I’m not saying they will beat the Lakers but at least they’ll have a higher chance then the 2 other teams. OG is the perfect defender for LeBron so expect him to guard LeBron all game long. I wouldn’t say I 100% trust Gasol and Ibaka to guard AD but it won’t be bad at all. If it’s too bad, the Raptors can throw double teams at AD. The thing that put the Raptors on top is their guard play. Lowry and FVV is too much for the Lakers since their guards are garbage. - @torontoraptorshub on Instagram
