I’ve been vegan for sixteen years, I also follow a sustainable, low-waste lifestyle, and lately I’ve been seeing a lot of white vegans complaining about climate change and gatekeeping veganism, making it even more difficult for those who are interested in being vegan to be welcomed into this lifestyle. Your all-or-nothing attitude about being plant-based is damaging. Your inability to understand other people’s financial, physical, and emotional needs is exhausting. You are part of a serious problem: by intentionally pushing your personal choices and lifestyle on Indigenous, Black people, and other people of color your veganism is cultural colonialism. No matter how well intentioned you are, these acts are racist and problematic. Environmental justice is racial justice, for you not to acknowledge capitalism and colonialism within veganism is ignorant and problematic. You are part of a much larger issue, because if you don’t care about the welfare and rights of non-white people and their environments, your veganism is performative. You do not need to be seen as “one of the good white people,” by posting and virtue signaling your “sustainable” vegan lifestyle. Sustainability and veganism have been guarded by whites for decades. Not everybody can afford to eat vegan. Not everybody can afford to buy from sustainable brands. Not everybody can live a zero-waste lifestyle. Stop gatekeeping veganism and sustainability. Acknowledge your privilege. Acknowledge colonialism and capitalism within vegan communities. Most importantly, acknowledge the rampant racism and gatekeeping within your own vegan, sustainable lifestyle. Our staff took advantage of some late summer sunshine to paddle Forked Lake, in the Sargent Ponds Wild Forest. Mikhail @volk_mishka has moved from Yekaterinburg to Talnakh and tours people on the magical Putorana Plateau. We have asked him about hiking, the nature of the Arctic, and the most beautiful places on Taymyr. ⠀ ❓When did you first come to Taymyr and how did it happen? • In 2016. Im a geologist and I was invited to work in Norilsk. By that time, I have already worked for two summers in Chukotka, so I knew a little about the north. ⠀ ❓ Why did you start touring on the plateau? • This land has been drawing me in with its pristine nature. Tourism is my main hobby, Ive been doing it for over 15 years now. I wanted to combine business and pleasure, and fate has led me to the @powerofterritory team, and we began doing stories. ⠀ ❓Why do people come to the plateau? • They want to try themselves in the shoes of a discoverer. Take a break from life and sort out their thoughts. ⠀ ❓What is something everyone has to see on Taymyr? • The Putorana Plateau with its deep canyons, thousands of waterfalls, and forests. The Anabar Plateau, one of the oldest structures on Earth, which is pierced by river valleys The Byrranga Mountains, the most northern and harsh mountains, the place where the musk oxen live ⠀ ❓Why hiking? Are you not afraid? • I do this within the boundaries of my comfort zone. Ive been in tourism ever since the childrens tourist club, and before that my grandad would bring me along when he went fishing or hunting. He taught me to wander around and adore nature. ⠀ ❓What does a person have to ask themselves if they want to hike on the plateau? • What do they want to see? In the north the spring, summer, and autumn are 3 months long, and those who come for a couple of weeks see only a part of the short but varied season. Spring brings floods, bird mating games. The beginning of summer, birds are in their nests, the tundra is fragrant with flowers, and the polar day makes you forget about sleep. The end of the summer means mushrooms, berries, and fewer mosquitoes. The autumn is a red carpet of leaves, bright yellow larches, and, of course, the northern lights, a phenomenon which cannot be expressed in words, only seen for yourself! ⠀ 🇷🇺👇 - @fusionnow on Instagram

Yesterday I read a chapter in a book I’ve been savoring that really resonated with me. The book is “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. The chapter was about the Windigo- the boogeyman the Ojibwe people dreamt up to prevent selfishness and cannibalism in months of winter famine- who is always hungry and never satiated, consumed by consumption, roaming the winter landscape gnawing off its own lips. One selfish bite of human flesh and you are one forever. The word “Windigo” literally means fat excess or thinking only of oneself. The author says there is a Windigo in each of us caring more for its own survival than anything else. It is said that self destruction IS Windigo, and it stems from any overindulgent habit. The author relates Windigo to our addictions to alcohol, drugs and technology, our rampant consumption of material goods in search of wholeness and the rape of the environment for “infinite” natural resources for more and MORE money. THEN (1831) & NOW (2020) While you’re out on your Sunday walk, swing by 45 St. Paul Street, the original location of Collingwood’s first railway depot, currently the Town’s Museum. Here’s a few dates of interest: - original railway depot was built in 1855, destroyed by fire in around 1864 - a new brick station with the square tower was erected in 1874, also damaged by fire in 1932. - the current building, erected in 1997, is a simplified replica of the 1874 building. Wizard Island Wizard island is a volcanic cinder cone which has formed an island in the west end of Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. The volcano was created more than 6,000 years ago when a volcano erupted into what is know today as Crater Lake National Park. Wizard island is built on a platform of andesite lava. It includes a large cone of andesite cinder which formed on top. Some parts of the cone which form Wizard island were formed by eruptions underwater, while other sections were part of eruptions above water. The island looks relatively small within the large lake and high rim walls. The island actually rises about 767 feet above the surface of the lake and about 2,400 - 2,500 feet above the floor of the caldera under the surface of the lake. The island is about 1 mile across. The area at the base of the cone is approximately 3.02 square miles. The volume of the cone is 0.6 cubic miles. We have recently obtained a Northern Territory Plumbers Licence and will be flying in and out of Yulara,NT for next 13 months to carry out a complete refurbishment on 236 Bathrooms and kitchens @sailsinthdesert Hotel. Tori Baird - Paddle Like a Girl Women Empowerment. Confident Canoeing. Backcountry Exploration. Tori has been canoeing whitewater for the last 7 years, navigating some of Ontario’s most challenging white water rivers. Her most notable trips include a few fly-in remote wilderness whitewater rivers. In 2015 she paddled the East Natashquan in Northern Quebec, in 2016 the Porcupine River in Northern Saskatchewan, and in 2017 she paddled the Mountain River in the Northwest Territories only a few days after completing an 8-day, 160km backpacking trek across the Rocky Mountains from Jasper to Grande Cache. These experiences have helped Tori gain confidence and comfortability in the backcountry, and she wanted to share this type of empowerment with other women. So, this summer she officially launched her own workshop business - @paddlelikeagirl_ Tori’s goal is simple: to help more women of all shapes, ages, and backgrounds discover the peace and beauty that mother nature has to offer. Great news! Port Coquitlam restaurants & businesses can continue to serve customers in outdoor spaces such as streets & sidewalks until the end of Oct 2021. Tuesday night, City Council agreed to extend a program it introduced in May that allows businesses to use public rights-of-way such as streets, sidewalks and parking lots for commercial activities such as patios, lineups and product displays. The Liquor Control and Regulation Branch is being advised of this change which will allow businesses to continue operating uninterrupted. City staff continue to work with businesses to provide advice about how they can meet the regulatory and insurance requirements. Interested businesses should contact the City’s Property Use Coordinator at business@portcoquitlam.ca or 604-927-5266. We are throwing it back today to this old postcard, postmarked August 14, 1936. “Dear Seders, Abe and I couldn’t have a better time, for we consider this place paradise. Evie, tell your friends; no more conducive place to marital bliss could exist. Love and kindest regards, Natalie & Abe”. We couldn’t agree more! Did you know that what is currently Quisisana actually used to be two neighboring music camps, Quisisana and Sunset Inn? Quisisana’s history began in 1907 when NYC dilettante Kate Strauss purchased a parcel of eastern shoreline on Kezar Lake with the intent to build a refuge for her friends in the music world. She named it Quisisana, which translated means: a place of healing. In 1927, the property was sold to violinist Harriet Schreyer and she ran in with her sisters Paula Schreyer Revesz, a lieder singer, and Annette Schreyer Stumpf. Meanwhile, trumpeter Gustav Heim, who first came to Kezar Lake as a guest at Quisisana, in 1923 began building his own musical retreat next door, naming it the Sunset Inn. Both properties were known as music camps and have long histories of master classes and performances. The Schreyer sisters even ran Sunset Inn while Mr. Heim, arrested for manufacturing intoxicating liquors, reported to jail in South Paris, Maine.
