This picture was captured by @_cammcleod_ during @courtneydauwalters CT FKT attempt. Well before being taken to the emergency room we were starting to become concerned with her health, especially when it came to her breathing and lungs. @runanddone contacted several medical experts, to include ski patrol, nurses, and the Denver Broncos medical staff. It was determined at that time it was safe to rule out HAPE and other serious health issues. We were given the green light for her to continue on with her goal of completing the Colorado Trail in 8 days and 30 minutes. The grit. The mental toughness. The will to continue on through adversity is so inspiring and something words just cannot describe. You have to be there and witness her drive to truly understand. Well... it’s been a roller coaster few days for me, but due to the fires, hazardous air quality and ultimate forest closures we’ve decided to call off the JMT 🥺 (we do have hopes to get an earlier date for the permit lottery next season!)... Yes, it was just a trip and we have a lot to be thankful for... but if I’m honest, I had no idea how much emotion and energy I had been storing in this trip. Without realizing, it had become my “carrot” that I was focusing on to get me through craziness of the past 6 months. And suddenly, when the unexpected took it away, it exposed a lot of stuff I needed to process. . . God teaches us a lot in seasons like these, where we feel lost and confused, when our plans unravel... we are reminded of where we are supposed to be anchoring our hope. Not in stuff, or people or plans, but in Him. That as we learn to praise Him in the middle of the unknown, not just on the mountain tops, is where He does His greatest work in us, before He leads us out into the Promised Land. 🦋 - @and.oh on Instagram

Throwback to one of my favorite adventures in recent memory. For years I had sledded by this striking peak and always thought some day I needed to stand on top and ski it. I showed @bonmyway a few photos and we set out on the late spring mission. After a few miles of dirt and rock sledding we crossed a river and reached the snow. We then continued the approach with a long ride of committed sidehills and steep climbs. We reached the saddle just below the peak in the late afternoon and set up camp where we enjoyed a sunset dinner. After a chilly but beautifully clear night we woke up at sunrise with a harder overnight freeze than expected. We had a casual breakfast while we waited for the snow to soften up. Once ready we hiked the last steep icy pitch up the backside of the peak arriving at the summit in the mid morning. After a scary minute trying to decide where the cornice was supported we inched our way to the edge to view the slope that had brought us all this way. Our timing was good and the snow had softened up but appeared stable. With the first turn on a hanging snowfield Brandon dropped in ice axe in hand. It was quickly apparent the conditions were perfect and we opened up 3000 feet of sustained steep turns all the way to near the valley floor. Spirits were high on the ride out and when I snapped my ski on a firm sidehill it was a small price to pay for the journey we had just completed. I can’t believe it’s been a whole year already with @emerleeslc. A year is something I consider a huge milestone in a relationship. There’s so many things that can tear a new relationship apart, especially when you throw in a global pandemic, financial stress, earthquakes, hurricane winds, the economy crashing, etc. Situations like these and the stress they induce on people can lead to some serious problems and break relationships apart. Other times it can bond you together and make other scary things seem minuscule and manageable. Luckily we fell into the latter. I’ve spent a lot of my life, in relationships and out of them, alone on the road. My relationship with the outdoors has never been shared with a partner before and I’m so grateful to have found someone that can share it with me. Emily throws road trip ideas out left and right, scours google maps for new places to camp together in solitude, packs the car while I’m trying to get projects out the door, takes me to new places she doesn’t share with anyone else, guides me down slot canyons and eagerly tries new things like mountain biking so we can share more of the outdoors together. Finding a partner that shares my life and energy to explore has made for the best year of my life, minus the whole world seemingly falling apart around us. We will see a very weak freeze on Tuesday night and temperatures will climb into the mid 50s on Wednesday. Natural avalanches like this one can run from steep rocky terrain during peak daytime heating. Avoid travel on and under steep rocky slope where these avalanches are most likely. To stay safe get into and out of the mountains early before the surface snow starts to lose cohesion. Remember you often have to move through lower elevation areas to egress from the mountains. Lower elevation slopes will become weaker and more dangerous before higher elevation slopes. Plan your day accordingly. All it took was a trip before everything changed. May 2019: I hit the road on a Friday to sell my products in Austin. Steff told me our house finally was on the market, and just before leaving I told him, ‘you just watch babe, this house is going to be sold before I even get home!’ As I drove back from my trip, our home was under contract. That same weekend I received an email from my boss asking for my end of year conference. The day I returned we had our meeting. The meeting went fine as far as outsiders were concerned, but in my core I knew things were not fine. I knew I had been asked to take a position I was not qualified for and would not have the support I needed to succeed. Immediately, I knew the most honorable step was to resign. With God’s prompting, assurance, and literal signs from heaven I saw what door I was supposed to walk through, and after a week away in South Carolina, I accepted a position at Mann MS. 💛 March 2020: 6 1/2 mos into the school year I took a few days off before Spring Break and headed for Cali 🤙🏼. Little did I know, that on this trip, returning looked like temporary school cancellations, then eventual online learning. August 2020: I find myself today home from a two week adventure, and another sudden change is before me... Steffan and I are relocating. We plan to keep our home in Abilene, TX, but come Wednesday we are moving to a one bedroom apartment in Uvalde, TX. We met two years ago today, about 700 miles north on this very same trail. ⠀⠀ Its illegal to enter the US from Canada on the PCT, so most folks who are attempting a southbound thru-hike start at Harts Pass and hike north to the border before turning around and starting their full trek south. ⠀⠀ I was on my way to the border, he was on his way back. We crossed paths near Hopkins Pass, and never having hiked in the snow before I was all nerves about what the conditions over the pass would be. ⠀⠀ Hows the snow up ahead? I asked him. ⠀⠀ Its totally fine! he assured me. ⠀⠀ But it wasnt fine, not for my level of inexperience, and I spent the entire snowy descent distracting myself from my fear with a mental soundtrack of Screw that dude! He doesnt know what the hell hes talking about! ⠀⠀ I didnt think Id ever see him again. I had no idea that wed soon become part of the same trail family. And I certainly couldnt have predicted that two years later wed be living side-by-side van life together and day hiking the PCT during a pandemic. ⠀⠀ Which is to say that I am learning to let myself be taken by surprise, and to lean into the biggest possible plot twists of my life. Aspen corner is located partway up Snowbowl Road with ample parking and a couple hiking trails that branch off in a few directions. Just a short way down the main trail is a clearing with a meadow and one of the best views of the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff. On Friday, Lucas and I hiked over to the west side of the Sierra to start a backpacking trip with some friends. Unbeknownst to us the Creek Fire started that night not far from us. I wrote about the process becoming aware of the fire and the decisions we made to plan our evacuation. Here’s a preview: “A few miles into the hike we became aware of smoke in the air and were not surprised. We had anticipated that. There were wildfires all over California and we knew some would probably blow smoke over where we were at some point of the trip. We hiked for 6 miles before we noticed the black smoke above us. At 1pm we had just come out of the woods and arrived at an overlook that presented a fantastic view of the West side of Ritter, Banner, and the Minarets. Above us a black plume crawled across the sky and began to thunder. By 2pm the sun disappeared along with our view of the mountains in front of us. I had lived in the Wasatch for 3.5 years before I went on my first hike. I didnt believe that I had the durability to spend the additional time on my feet. And rightly so, I had spent a decade dealing with consecutive injuries—on very low running mileage. # My training leading up to that time consisted of 40-60 min trail runs. I didnt do interval training. I didnt race. I settled for preserving the little bit of running that I could do. # And then things changed. I started to introduce myself to new training stresses. Hiking initially involved using poles to offload the forces on my feet. Then I ditched the poles, and gradually increased the duration of my hikes. I started doing longer runs. Sprint workouts became my new favorite thing. And a year later, I signed up for my first road half marathon. # Ever since then, training and racing has evolved in a very satisfying way. Im glad that I was willing to take the calculated risks to become the athlete I am today. # Over the years, I have treated so many patients who have given up their sport due to injuries. As a kid, every year I would write “FIRST SNOW!” on my mom’s calendar that hangs in the kitchen. It was the only time of the year that I ever wrote on her calendar; and I always took full advantage of doing so, adorning that little square with snowflakes and exclamation points like it was my own holiday. L’APPROCHE 1/2 - Cela pourrait être le Tibet ou le Pérou Voilà à quoi ressemble la marche d’approche pour le Mont-Blanc par la voie normale : un grand pierrier doré, bien caché depuis Chamonix. On y accède par un petit train à crémaillère menant au « Nid d’Aigle » sous le glacier de Bionnassay. La foule qui s’y mêle est bigarrée : des locaux, des touristes, des alpinistes. Puis commence l’ascension. Le chemin serpente. On y croise : des bouquetins qui cherchent quelques brins d’herbe ; des virages en épingle peu protégés - un pas de côté et vous voilà dans la vallée ; un système d’alerte si la poche d’eau de tête rouse se fracture - Il y a 100 ans cela avait détruit le village dessous ; La « brigade blanche », des équipes (de guides expérimentés) qui contrôlent l’accès au Mont Blanc - pour éviter la sur-fréquentation et les projets exotiques, comme ces montagnards de pacotille qui s’étaient mis en tête d’amener un rameur, un poteau, ou un sauna au sommet. Il fait bon et beau. La marche est courte : 2h30 plus tard nous sommes au refuge de Tête Rousse. Regardless of life’s troubles, the rivers never wavered. No matter what weight I carried, the mountains offered me a place to challenge myself and unload any burdensome baggage. The therapy I found in the wild is something that can’t be bought. I owe a lifetime of memories to our public lands and waters and am grateful to be doing what I can to preserve those spaces for generations to come.
