Barbarossa: the war of hate and false presumptions ➡️ Wehrmacht soldiers dressing a statue of Stalin with German uniform during the invasion of the Soviet Union (circa 1941). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After the start of Operation Barbarossa, part of the German plan for a fast victory was based on the presumption that a significant number of the Soviet population would welcome the change of regime and liberation from Stalinism. This was the case of most Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, Ukrainians, and other subjugated ethnic groups (some even enthusiastic) as in the case of the Cossacks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, two essential factors prevented the German occupation from having a favorable point of view by the population of Eastern Europe, not even remembering the austere (but bearable) German occupation of 1917-1919. The first of these was that the Moscow Government had displaced a significant amount of population from the former Baltic States and ethnic Germans to the east in a brilliant political move. The other reason were the Germans themselves, whose actions seemed aimed at earning the hate of the population from the first moment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In this regard, the three main orders issued by the high command of the Wehrmacht (OKW) with the excuse that Moscow had not signed the Geneva and The Hague conventions were: 1. Soviet political officers were not prisoners of war and should be executed without proceeding. 2. If a German soldier committed offenses against civilians or prisoners, disciplinary action was optional. 3. Any civilian who attacked a German soldier would be executed. [1] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Second World War soon turned into a war of hate between nations. .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌈: @julius.colorization [1] Glantz, D. Ive wanted to make a #Ghostbusters poster for a very long time but have been too shy to for a lot of reasons. Its my favorite movie being one, and another being that there are countless other GB inspired posters and tributes that have been far better than anything I could produce... but it thanks to a mixture of blind confidence and intentional distraction from my personal life, Ive come up with this. Also, happy birthday #BillMurray. . . . #poster #posterart #movieposter #alternativemovieposter #filmart #movieart #danaykroyd #sigourneyweaver #haroldramis #erniehudson #anniepotts #rickmoranis #ivanreitman #1984 #ghostbuster #digitalart #digitalillustration #illustration #graphicdesign #graphicart #art - @thedarknatereturns on Instagram

Elements of the British 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division fighting in Kleve, Germany on February 10, 1945. This was one of two towns (the other being Goch) that the Germans fortified behind the West Wall in the Reichswald Forest. Notice the Valentine Mk 1 Archer tank destroyer at the beginning of the film. The forward-most defensive German unit in the town, the 84th Infantry Division, was essentially wiped out in the fighting, and the British were able to secure Kleve on February 11th. From there the 43rd Division proceeded to advance 4½ miles to the high ground which overlooked Goch. Over the next few weeks the British experienced more heavy fighting as they worked to secure Goch, notably between February 18th and 21st. - @theworldwars on Instagram
