It’s been a long week of fire fighting in the Tsavo Triangle. On Tuesday thanks to the many involved, the fire was finally contained. From all of us at Tsavo Trust we would like to say a sincere thanks to our fellow stakeholders and the wider community: the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Kenya Wildlife Service, Wildlife Works, Tropic air, Taita Estate and so many more who volunteered to help. The ongoing collaborations and support have been immense. In this joint effort, the Tsavo Trust ground teams and HQ workforce in three vehicles assisted in the firefighting for 6 days. On one day our ground teams conducted a 23 hour shift to battle the fire. The Tsavo Trust aerial unit covered a total of 2,865 kms over 25 hours of flight during the firefighting activities; working alongside the DSWT pilots in guiding the ground teams and helicopters to areas of high risk. All the teams worked tirelessly round the clock in extremely challenging conditions, and in the end we came out on top. Recently, I had the amazing opportunity to ride along on the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. The drive was absolutely stunning, we definitely were spoiled with a beautiful day. But more importantly, I got to see first hand, the demands on our truck drivers along with their knowledge and expertise of the roads. As a person in HR, anytime I can understand better what our employees face and how we can support them in their day to day is what I strive for. The trip, in addition to being an amazing experience, left me with a new appreciation and respect for our truck drivers and the jobs they do. So next time you see a truck driver on the road, give em a wave 👋🏻 and if you’re driving, give them some space. It’s the least we can do to help make their workday a good one. Race report: lake Havasu After a very quick test run last weekend I was nervous about racing my new @benchmarkperformanceinc powered @carr_one_fabrication and @stonebuilt_racing clutched and prepped #rzr170 I got a good start on Saturday with a ripping fast hole shot but my nerves got the best of me while I adjusted to the new set up. I ended up in the 6 spot. On Sunday I was in third by the the first turn when I got spun off the track. When I recovered I was in the middle of the pack then at third turn a car got stuck on me. After recovering from that I was still in the middle of the pack. I started to work my way up and pass some of the competition and continued to drive harder and get more comfortable, my car is capable of more and I plan on pushing harder and getting faster. I managed to get on the box in the 🥉 spot and getting my first podium of the year. #ScienceTuesday: Geology & Museum History 2020 marks the 150th Anniversary of the New York State Museum! The roots of the Museum lie in the 1836 establishment of a New York State Natural History Survey comprised of geologists, biologists, paleontologists, and agriculturalists. They travelled the state, reported what they found, and collected samples. These samples became the core of future New York State Museum Collections. The science of the early New York State geologists, including James Hall, was of global significance. The “father of modern geology”, Sir Charles Lyell of England, visited the NY geologists in 1841, and said “The Helderberg outcrops [the area of today’s Thacher State Park] must be known to every geologist if he were to understand his science.” Another significant early geologist from Europe, Louis Agassiz, said in 1856 “When European men of science come to this country their first question is: ‘Which way is Albany?’” Most of the photographs included here date from the 1860s-1910s and are from the Geological and Agricultural Hall, the first building constructed for the sole purpose of housing the collections of New York State. Also included is an image of notable paleontologist, James Hall, who was a founding member of the Geological Survey and who became the NYSMs first director. This past weekend we held our 9th Virtual Young Guns Corral. Six talented young builders compete for the Pacific Northwest Regional Corral. Special thanks to the amazing pro builders that judged this one. BOTB Top 12 and Pro Division Truck Judge Jeremiah Profitt @procrusier, 2018 Young Guns Division Champion Kyle Kuhnhausen @kckuhnhausen and master painter Ricardo Lopez @customsbylopez. Corral competitors are always the best of who applied. These are the young builders that do as much of their own work as possible. The winning Young Gun competed is no stranger to the #YoungGuns Regionals as he won a #GoldenTicket last year. In a mere seven months he built and amazing frame swapped vehicle with no area of the build untouched. His skills in fabrication and design are becoming quite evident and unique. It was his ability to customize the entire vehicle that won him the top prize. A huge Congratulations to the next recipient of a Young Guns Regional Golden Ticket which will bring him and his build to the 2020 SEMA show is… Matteo Medoro @shabbamotorsports and his 1947 Dodge. The frame and drive train swap and custom bed proves his fabrication and engineering skills while the attention to detail with copper plumbing, vintage touches in the cab and work truck theme fully impressed the judges. The runners up also showed a tremendous amount of skill. Jonas Neels has an engineering mind that blew away the judges and if the interior and engine were customized we may be announcing a different winner. Austin Phipps’ daily driver showed an immense list of very subtle modifications that the judges admired. Both of these builders will have a second chance to compete for a Golden Ticket during the Online Fan Vote round in late September. It’s Throwback Thursday! In 1912, the Richmond Locomotive Works built the first group of Z1 engines. Once delivered to the Norfolk & Western, the 427,000-pound engines worked on the Pocahontas, Radford, and Norfolk divisions. The 2-6-6-2 mallet locomotive was compact and powerful, ideally suited to hauling heavy tonnage trains. Efficient and economical, these engines became the standard for heavy freight power, adding efficiency and economy to the railway’s operations. Today’s image was captured by a railroad photographer in 1917. He took several photographs of Engine 1302 and included an unidentified man in this shot—peeking around the engine—for scale. Then and now, #innovation is an important part of the Norfolk Southern story. Railroads and railroaders deliver the goods and work hard every day to keep the steel wheels rolling. The average train overhangs the track by at least three feet, so in the spirit of #RailSafetyWeek, the gentlemen pictured is too close for comfort! - @norfolksouthern on Instagram
