Throwback to the small project that started it all. January 2018 I decided to quit my excellent six-figure job and start a business. I had a company truck, company phone, unlimited overtime available, and my post-secondary degree was paid for. I gave it all up to start a new chapter, pursue a chance to make a name for myself and what I thought would be easy money. Does it get easier? Does it get harder? Do you ever feel successful? How do you rate success? Whats the next step? How do you learn without making mistakes? Transitioning from a talented and successful carpenter with structured rules and responsibilities to a small business owner has sure kicked my ass some days. They dont tell you that just because youre good at what you do now, youll be good at everything. Owning a business isnt the same as being a great employee. You need to be self-motivating more than ever before. Budgets arent just guidelines anymore, theyre the difference between profiting from a job to struggling to put food on the table and pay bills. You have to be very specific about the battles you chose to fight and always focus on your goals. Business is hard. Some say life can only hit you what you can handle, and that goes both ways with the good and the bad. The worst times in life is a test, just the same as the good times. What do you do when its tax season and the CRA is coming after you, you have no money in the bank, clients arent paying you, theres no work coming up, and employees are starting to worry? You wish it would all be over with the flip of a switch but life doesnt work like that. What about when youve got money in the bank, bills are paid, employees are happy, work is flowing, clients are paying and everything feels fine? Is this the end? What motives you to keep going? Is it the feeling of success or the fear of failure? What are your thoughts on business? Is it what you expected? What lessons have you learned? What advice would you give new business owners? For the handover process, we have built a new Sales point, which is located on the second floor of this tower. In the premises, designed in an industrial style, we have prepared a brief overview of the project’s history and its locality for the future residents, as well as the photo gallery and mockups of the materials used for the construction of the project. Growing up and spending summers on my grandparents farm grew my love affair for that of which is old. On this property stands a 100 yr old limestone house my ancestors built. Mix in my 25 yr love of vintage clothing (dont look in my basement right now). I have an overwhelming and profound appreciation for the historical preservation of things to say the least. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The biggest thing for me while building out this space was to maintain the historical integrity of it. So everything down to the style of light fixtures I sourced, will pay homage to what stood before me. Aesthetic is everything to me.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The brick you have seen in the previous photos is called firebrick and by city code we had to cover it up with drywall. Мы сейчас обустраиваем наш новый керамический дом, небольшой спойлер- там будет столько окон, что не сосчитать❤️ У нас планируется открытие, с призами, скидками, но об этом чуточку потом расскажу. ⠀ Сейчас мы гоняем из одной студии в другую- собираем вещи в одной, красим стены в другой. Itsy bitsy pieces of our partition wall - finally ! We dedicated a slightly larger space to our dining area compared to kitchen area - WAIT WHAT, hear me out. I think one of the first reasons why we insisted on a smol dining space is because we are located in a CC, and there are many people around, lots and lots of cute kiddos attending childcare/tuition too, and we at least wanted to make sure that there will be a comfortable space for 6 people to dine in, & get to know our community. At the same time, there will be enough space for a good flow for pick up of bakes, etc. I mean, we make do with expensive space here in Singapore. I’ve personally worked in really huge and also the tiniest of kitchens, most of the time in Singapore, we fall on the tiny side and we make it work still. Mom and I have always felt strongly about the Why behind doing what we do. We knew that we’d love to see people sit in for a chat in this cosy space, hoping it turns out just as we envisioned. Here’s me sneaking up on the progress , at the same time seeing loads of tuition kids run out of their centres, omg it feels so warm, I can’t wait to say hello!😭 I want to feed them all cookies !!!!!!! ❤️ P.S. Whoops! #waybackwednesday to that time I thought it was a good idea to take down my fireplace in one fell swoop instead of section by section 🤦🏿♂️. I really lucked up here guys. If you watch the video closely, I almost took out the ceiling fan because I expected the brick to crumble as it fell... it didn’t 🤷🏿♂️. Fortunately enough it fell between the gaps of the propellers and hit the floor. We didn’t make it out unscathed though. The brick continued to slide as it hit the floor and pushed through to the couch I believed I’d moved back far enough 😩 (keep swiping). With that being said, the headache was well worth it. The newly faced fireplace couldn’t have turned out better. Moral of the story is be as cautious as you can when you’re moving through your remodel. Better to be overly conservative with your methods to avoid mishaps like these along your journey. We’re coming to a close on this remodel, and I’ll start posting a bit more content from our own experiences over the past 3 months of taking this house to down to the studs and building it back up to our own unique vision.
