The 805 is the beer we poured out at our reception during a moment of silence for my grandpa who died a few days earlier + everyone else we all knew who passed. This commitment to being sober wasn’t planned. It kinda just happened. 🤷🏽♀️ Turns out a few weeks after my last drink, we decided to “fully” commit to #ttc (tracking ovulation). No way could we have ever imagined that 3 years later we’d live through 4 retrievals, 1 transfer and 1 miscarriage with #eggretrieval 5 around the corner. 😳 And all of that after 2 rapes & nearly a dozen #suicideattempts with the last one landing me in the ER. Life. Is. Fucking. Cray. My life (+ this account) isn’t only about infertility or only being a #rapesurvivor or only surviving a decade of suicidal tendencies & now learning how to find peace & joy on the daily. It’s about sharing my true story (especially the shitstorms) to help others do the same. Sharing your story has magical healing powers. How can we live our best life if we don’t do it honestly & authentically? How can we live IN our truth if we don’t openly acknowledge what we know to be true? Add ice & shake hard. Fine strain into a chilled coupe. No garnish needed. *Sudachi Cordial -12 oz Sudachi juice (can be store bought) -About 8 oz sugar (by weight) Clarify the Sudachi juice using any clarification method. Measure the brix of the clarified juice with a refractometer. Simmer over low heat & add sugar until 50 brix is reached. Bottle & refrigerate. I DID IT 🙌🏻 Yesterday at 9:30am I went under the knife and had my breast implants removed. The relief I feel today to be on the other side is tremendous. I can’t even explain to you all the anxiety I felt leading up to this day but I knew I needed to do it. It was a hard choice but one I am so thankful I made. Recovery so far has been WAY better than I anticipated. The pain has been very manageable and my nausea only lasted a few hours post surgery which never happens for me. I went to my first post op appointment today to get switched out of the ace wrap and into a zip up bra. Which means I got to see them for the first time. I had been preparing myself for this for a while so I think I handled it pretty well. There’s not much left y’all but ya know what? I feel so much lighter, my neck feels looser, and I feel GOOD. We weighed the implants and they were 1 lb and 11oz total...while that doesn’t seem like a lot, they are HEAVY and imagine having them shoved up under your chest muscles and walking around trying to breath like that. Man...I don’t know how I did it for 4 1/2 years. Thank you everyone for your love, support and prayers. I believe in the power of prayer and I know God has been at work through all of this! Im normally a glass half full kind of person (though recently, this has been tested somewhat and there have been times where my glass has needed refilling - both literally & metaphorically! 🍷...). This week, after the latest set of announcements, I gave myself a self-imposed time limit of 24 hours to indulge in a brief pity party for one before getting my head down and going back to what I do best - making plans.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Because whilst these past months have been testing and have shown us that plans are never set in stone, it has also shown us that life is too short and is there to be enjoyed. We need hope and we need optimism. Whether its through small, intimate gatherings or huge blow-out parties, weddings are one of the most important of all celebrations in life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a planner, I like to feel in control. During a time of such uncertainty, the only way I can regain some of that is to fully re-engage planner mode and go back to making plans - even if theres rather more contingencies now than before.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Im aware that optimism needs to be balanced with a measured dose of realism. Theres no denying that COVID is going to be here for a while and plans will need to be reactive for the foreseeable. But whether its through vaccines, herd immunity, rapid response testing kits or a general pressure to get back to normality for the sake of both our sanity and the economy, things WILL resume.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So for now, Im going to keep doing what I do best - working with my clients to try and navigate these murky waters, providing ideas, creativity {and clarity, where I can}, and working to create beautiful, heartfelt weddings. We might need a Plan A, B and C, we might need to make last minute decisions, and we might need to be a little more flexible. I spent some time at Katy Prairies Indiangrass Preserve this weekend walking through the tall grasses that provide habitats for wildlife native to the Texas coastal plains and serve as natural flood mitigation via their long root systems that draw water deep down into the soil during the rains. I know that the reconstructed microcosms I create back at the studio after a good nature soak are interpretive outputs, and not necessarily scientifically accurate, but cloches are my favorite design platform because of how well they lend themselves to demonstrating and honoring the relationships we observe between all living things in an environment. They remind me of how beauty, growth, and stability are all dependent on a delicate balance of forces both biotic and abiotic. (PC: @colljeffers) Ingredients: 1 oz stone fruit-infused vodka 2 scoops lemon sorbet Chilled Mezza di Mezzacorona Rose, to top (about 3 oz per cocktail) Method: (2) For each cocktail, add 1 oz of the stone fruit-infused vodka and the 2 scoops of lemon sorbet to a metal cocktail shaker or small metal bowl. Went back and forth a million times over whether or not I wanted to post this picture. I want to be clear that physical changes arent the only thing that matter on this journey. Sometimes I need that reminder. As a proud member of the turtle club, I often get lost in other peoples success and I begin to compare my journey to theirs. I am so proud of the amazing women (who I now call my friends) in this community, but oftentimes I lose sight of the fact that their journey is not mine (and mine certainly is not theirs). This week, at the ripe old age of 28.5 (yes I celebrate half birthdays), I realized my hair has been a security blanket to me - until now. I chopped 4.5 inches of my hair off the other day and it made me realize that Ive never really been in a place where Ive even remotely thought about changing my look, for fear that I wont like the results. I texted @wwsarahstyle and asked her right after this picture was taken does my face look round and chubby? and of course she said no because shes a good friend, but the more I looked at it, I realized how much I have changed on the inside. Never before would I have the confidence to make such a drastic and instant change and be ok with it. I love how it looks but I love the confidence Ive gained even more. ORANGE JULY: “From Prosecco to Prošek: Sandi Škerk’s journey.” —————————— A new challenge for Škerk, which explores the Classic method process. He has recently chosen the name of his Prosecco, which he did not want to trivialize by simply calling it Prosecco, due to the bad reputation that is often associated with this wine. So he has an idea: in the Costone Triestino area, Prosecco could only be made if the grapes had been harvested after the celebration of San Luca, on October 18th, meaning very ripe Glera grapes. It macerates on the skins until the first fermentation is completed; is drawn off and placed in wooden barrels, then the second fermentation starts the following year thanks to the same vintage must. It will then stay 4 years on its lees. I had so much fun getting dressed up for my bridal fair yesterday! 𝒯𝑜𝒹𝒶𝓎 𝐼 𝓌𝒾𝓁𝓁 𝒹𝑜 𝓃𝑜𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔. This year has been like no other. Doctors appointments, more hospital visits than I can count, loosing my mother, funeral arrangements, slideshows, legalities, working long days and often through the weekend, getting after myself for not doing a workout, not sleeping, sorting, packing, negotiating, organizing. I feel like I have hit a tipping point this week and it is vitally important I make this choice for myself. 𝒯𝑜𝒹𝒶𝓎. I will slow down. I will do nothing. Guilt free. No cleaning. No checking just a few emails. No negative self loathing for not doing a workout. No home improvements. No chores. No packing. I will go for a walk. Drink my coffee slow. Pause to feel the sunshine on my face. I will walk slowly. I will take in a strangers smile just a little longer. And I will not feel guilt for this croissant I’m about to eat. This year has definitely been strange. So many people saying 2020 has been the worst year but that’s not how I look at it (and believe me the last 4 months have been the hardest in my life) but I am not allowing myself to have a negative attitude instead I am asking what can I learn? Today I am learning to listen to what my heart needs. What does your heart need today? I share this vulnerable piece of me with you because we all need a reminder of how important it is to check in and take the steps we need to take for our own mental health. I still have a lot ahead of me in the coming months every impulse inside of me wants to be closer to being done so slowing down is hard. Dior heels and 0% sparkling wine. I sure know how to do a pandemic pregnancy party! Now back to these Dior shoes. Today is the 1st September which marks the start of @oxfamgb annual initiative #SecondHandSeptember - I decided last September to undertake their challenge to buy nothing new because the effects current levels of fashion production have on the planet are catastrophic (swipe for some facts gratefully borrowed from @venetialamanna ). I had become a more conscious shopper in recent years than I was before but I still bought new clothes fairly regularly. I was surprised at how easy I found Second Hand September. A couple of times Id find myself, out of habit rather than need, browsing online or wandering into shops and then Id remind myself of the challenge and stop. I got to the end of September and thought Ill do another month and see how I get on. One year later, bar some underwear (😂) and one pair of boots I havent bought any new clothes. What I have discovered though is the JOY of @vestiaireco and other resale sites, repairing old clothes and getting alterations made. I even dyed a dress myself recently, which has given it a whole new lease of life. I got this Ganni dress, brand new with tags, for a song (as my mum would say 😂) and these Dior shoes were a gift from said mum, also purchased from @vestiaireco - if youre in a position to do so, I encourage you to give #SecondHandSeptember a go. Hi I’m Michelle, I’m in the 25th percentile for income in the US. I’m also in the top quartile of American adults for education level. I can make the *choice* to make this “little” (though I’d argue I have one of the highest paying service jobs that exists in Telluride) and still live the life I do, because like probably everyone reading this post, I come from a place of relative privilege. I haven’t yet worked out how to make more while still upholding my quality of life and moral values. I live in a dreamy resort town, and live off of skimming the top off of rich people’s money, when they want to eat fancy things at a fancy restaurant. Roughly 50% of my of annual income goes to rent (and it’s only that low bc I share a bedroom with my partner), and luckily only 11% of my annual income goes to health insurance, because of Obamacare. My paychecks during “on season” are pretty darn good, so good in fact that from EACH paycheck, that’s every two weeks, I pay *almost* as much in taxes as Trump did in 2016 and 2017 combined. I guess I should cut him some slack though, all the rich people are doing it these days. . This is America. A corrupt oligarchy, where the rich put the relatively poor people against even poorer people, for wanting social security, unemployment, education, and Medicare/health, to be more than 15% of the US expenditures, just over a quarter of said military budget. Of those taxes that I pay, 54% goes to our military. The most destructive, wasteful entity in the world. Meanwhile, these “relatively poor” (as opposed to even poorer people), believe that taxes are trying to take more away from them, bc they see and experience so little of the benefits, instead trying to mimic what its like to actually be rich, and going into debt while doing so, whether it’s credit card debt, student loan debt, house debt, auto debt, medical debt, or all of the above. . Wanna talk about what it means to “hate America”? Taking from it, and giving nothing back. That’s also the definition of a parasite, by the way. - @chelleslacks on Instagram
