🧹🧹🧹 Last week, we received a message about three young #SILitterHero Staten Islanders who took initiative to spend their afternoon cleaning up their community. They told their parents they wanted to make it look nicer and decided to do it themselves.⁠ ⁠ Ben and his friends James (the organizer) and his younger brother Eli chose to spend their day cleaning up an area in the neighborhood that is on the water. They spent a total of about 6 hours doing their clean-up with a break.⁠ ⁠ When James asked if his friend Ben could help out, he told his mom “of course I’ll help”. Der kleine, bis zu 30 m tiefe See ist der Lebensraum vieler Amphibien (Moorfrosch, Feuersalamander) und Vögel. Der See ist vom Parkplatz gegenüber der Thomashütte einen guten Kilometer entfernt und wird gerne von Radfahrern, Spaziergängern und meist jugendlichen Grüppchen zum Sonnenbaden und Chillen angesteuert. Übernachten, Baden und Grillen sind eigentlich verboten; es hält sich nur nicht jeder daran. Leider verhält sich nicht jeder Besucher respektvoll der Natur gegenüber und so findet man doch immer wieder Müll rund um den See. Der (vermutlich vom Angelverein) bereitgestellte Müllsack am See wird von den Gästen dabei nur teilweise genutzt. Wenn Bequemlichkeit, Ignoranz und Alkohol im Spiel sind, zieht die Natur meist den Kürzeren. Auf der Ploggingrunde am Freitagabend war es ein halber Sack voll, die andere Hälfte kam auf dem Hin- und Rückweg dazu, vor allem am Parkplatz. Auf dem Rückweg war es bereits dunkel, aber zum Glück hatte ich die Stirnlampe mit dabei. The citizens of Washington showed their appreciation for the coastline of their state by coming out to pick up marine debris this past weekend. Nearly 500+ dedicated volunteers from around the Pacific Northwest followed all COVID-safety guidelines while celebrating Ocean Conservancys 35th annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) on 9/19/20. Volunteers hauled away an estimated 8,000 lbs. of plastic water bottles, household trash, lost fishing gear, and other types of washed up debris that kill or poison our coastal wildlife and spoil the natural beauty of our shorelines. The approximate value of the volunteer effort totaled nearly $50,000! These results are especially impressive taking into consideration that 20 Olympic National Park, Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, and Makah, Quinault, Quileute, and Hoh tribal beaches were closed for this cleanup in respect of preventing a COVID outbreak in our coastal communities. Today’s project. There has been a un-emptied garbage receptacle on Braddock Ave next to the old Braddock News Store for well over 2 years. I walked by it several times a week during that time and always said to myself “something needs to be done about this”. So today was the day I did something. . Full of the most disgusting, fermented, water soaked trash, it took 2 large bags to contain the refuse. I had to use a pitchfork to scoop out the trash. The can was also filled 2/3rds of the way with black stinky water. It was too heavy to lift so I dipped the water out with a pail. . I can see why Big’s Sanitation wouldn’t empty it, it was impossible to lift. The photo above shows just some of the trash our co-founder @wherebluebirdsfly_ found on the East Village sidewalks this week. The fact that theres trash on the sidewalk is only a small part of the problem. We dont just need to make sure trash ends up in the right bins, we need to create much less of it. Here are a few facts on waste and emissions: ✨ six times more plastic waste is incinerated than is recycled (source: EPA) ✨ the annual emissions from just two packaging manufacturing facilities studied in a 2015 report would be equal to adding almost 800,000 cars to the road (source: Center for Environmental Law) ✨ “compostables” typically include a chemical called PFAS, which contaminates soil, so composting sites don’t accept them. Compostable food packaging also does not add valuable organic matter to the compost. The so-called “compostable” packaging ends up in landfill or an incinerator (source: every person who runs a NYC composting site that we’ve spoken with) ✨ at current rates, by 2050 plastic will be responsible for up to 13% of the total global “carbon budget” – equivalent to 615 coal-fired power plants (source: EPA) ✨we won’t even go too far into the fact that China won’t take our recycling anymore, because the public health and emissions issues *our* recycling has created in China and Southeast Asian countries deserve their own thread The best solution: reuse, reuse, reuse. That’s the best way to keep NYC streets (and the whole planet) clean. With that said, it’s going to take some time to build the reusable-filled future of our dreams. Hi, friends. 3 days ago, I was on my way to a hair appointment when a truck swerved into my lane. It all happened so fast that I literally only had a moment to see him coming, try to swerve, and blink before impact. I don’t know how I walked away from it with only minor injuries and I am beyond grateful my children weren’t with me as every airbag deployed, including the ones where they typically sit. But I am here. I am recovering. It wasn’t my time to go. Each morning I wake up, I’m even more grateful. Especially as I look at my children imagining what it’d be like if I never saw them again. I’m hugging my people more for sure!! I’ve driven twice since then and started chiropractic care. I’m a bit beaten up on my shins where I hit the dash and I’m not walking super great, but I was able to do a Peloton ride yesterday with minor adjustments. I’m being gentle with myself. Last year in the Lewiston school system alone there was 111 homeless elementary students, 19 homeless middle schoolers, and 79 homeless high schoolers. Students are even living in “tent cities” and still attending school. I have been driving around Maine to collect clothing you might be throwing away or taking to Goodwill (where kids still cannot afford to buy them or have a way to get there). I will be donating these clothes directly to schools around Maine and the clothes that are not used for donation will be repurposed and sold for rewear. By 2030 it is expected that there will be 148 million tons of fashion waste... But that’s a conversation for another post 🐸 ☕️. I WAS WRONG - You can recycle blister packets! Did you know this? It turns out Terracycle recycle the plastic packets that contain medicinal tablets - with drop-off locations across the UK. Recycling is a minefield. As we know, so much of the plastic recycling we put into our council bins doesnt end up getting recycled with some of it dumped in South East Asia - not ideal... Ive cut down my plastic so dramatically I barely use any at all - but one area of my life Ive struggled to do this is healthcare. This is where Terracycle comes in. Once youve dropped off your empty blister packets, the plastic is separated by polymer type and extruded into plastic pellets to be repurposed. Great! *The bad news bit.....* Currently there are only 13 drop off centres for blister packet, our closest is in Stockport with other UK participating pharmacies in Newcastle, Stamford, Wellingborough, Great Yarmouth, Tiverton, Falmouth, Brighton, London & Belfast. Scientists have created a new super enzyme that can break down plastic up to six times faster than their previous enzyme. A team of researchers that previously re-engineered a plastic-eating enzyme named PETase have now combined it with a second enzyme to speed up the process, according to the University of Portsmouth. The super enzyme could have major implications for recycling polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, which is the most common thermoplastic used in single-use drink bottles, carpets, and clothing. One of the biggest challenges of our site has been the piling design - and if there was a major risk in the construction process, this was it. So we’re breathing enormous sighs of relief that this has now been completed without any issues. . . They may not look like much, but each of these descend 16.5m into the ground. They have been meticulously plotted so as to avoid a patchwork of rods underground that support the adjoining harbour wall. Today we worked in the snow and it was freezing. The next 6 weeks is going to be tough for a lot of people as we head into our second wave of lock down in Victoria and Melbourne moves into stage 4 restrictions. We all have to focus on the positives, we know we’re lucky to be out doing what we love, no matter how cold it is 🥶 I know people will be confined to apartments and it’s going to be tough, a lot of people will have kids home and it will be hard. Let’s try to focus on what we have, and pray for those who don’t have a roof over their head, food on the table or basic protection from the virus. Putting a plastic bottle in the recycling bin has been advertised to make us feel like although we consume a harmful product we are doing the most to offset environmental damage, but that’s just not true. 🔶 World Cleanup Day - 2020 🔶 So, I managed to get along two of my batch mates @shreem__28 & @sujith_vreddy to join me on a cleanup of a canal yesterday. It was a very shocking experience for me because I witnessed the same amount of trash littered around here as I have in India and on the beaches in Dubai. Thats made me understand even more the magnitude of how much of a problem plastic is. By the time we were done, we managed to collect 5 kgs+ in just an hour! We collected everything from cigarette butts to entire footballs from the canal. The guys took the footballs home to use for themselves but the rest of the stuff was disposed off in the garbage chute. We also had three people stop by to talk to us and say thank you and its always nice to have other people acknowledge your efforts. Also, we found two carcasses of ducks that had signs of death as a result of the plastic in their territory. I took Stopplastics challenge to pick up plastic beverage bottles and caps and look what I found! It was shocking how little time it took to collect 2 bags full of plastic bottles...they are everywhere. I picked these up in central Etobicoke in my local playground and it’s parking lot in no time at all. Why are we buying water in plastic bottles and why are we just tossing them wherever? Clearly this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Toronto city council please ban plastic beverage bottles...recycling is not the answer! ☘ 8.08.2020 АХЛЕСТЫШЕВА ⠀ 🌏Наша поездка состоялась😃😃😃 ⠀ 🌎Я сбилась со счета, но нас было около 50ти ребят🤪 ⠀ 🌏На Ахлестышева очень много мусора, особенно в бетонных блоках, и мы справились👍💪👌 ⠀ 🌎 Мусор вывез на утилизацию @peo_25. ⠀ 🌏Мы загрузили 9тикубовый самосвал и 2хтонный мусоровоз полностью, а также за остатками, которые не поместились, оперативно приехал ещё один мусоровоз. Plastic is everywhere. Of the 8.3 billion metric tons that has been produced, 6.3 billion metric tons has become plastic waste. Of that, only 9% has been recycled. Un cumulo di rifiuti lasciato a bordo strada, buste e vecchi oggetti lasciati in balia delle intemperie. In particolare una busta attrae l’attenzione di un ragazzo ed il proprio cane. Una busta dal contenuto raccapricciante. Il corpo, ormai senza vita, di un cane. E allora? Vi chiederete voi. E allora noi siamo disgustati, schifati, arrabbiati e tanto tanto delusi. Ogni giorno cerchiamo di sensibilizzare le persone al rispetto per la vita altrui, anche per quelle considerate, da molte persone, inferiori. Il corpo di quel cane è l’ennesima conferma di quanto la specie umana sia tossica, nociva e corrosiva per questo pianeta. Si parla tanto di evoluzione, di progresso. Ma capite che il progresso non è solo quello tecnologico. Il progresso lo si evince dall’accrescimento morale e intellettuale da parte di una determinata specie. E noi stiamo miseramente fallendo. Anzi, questa volta preferiamo dissociarci. Nessun “noi”. Perché azioni di questo tipo non ci appartengono. La vita di quel cane non valeva meno di quella di un bambino. No, non è utopia. Il corpo di quel cane, crudelmente morto, ha subito un ulteriore abuso venendo chiuso, con tanto di corda spessa, in una busta, da parte di chi di umano ha solo le sembianze. Gli animali uccidono per istinto, gli animali AGISCONO per istinto. Non hanno colpe, è la natura a guidarli. L’essere umano è una specie senziente, l’essere umano non ha giustificazione per la sua spietatezza, cattiveria, invidia e crudeltà così viscerali e incastonate nel proprio animo. La vita è una sola, la vita non puoi comprarla, la vita non è una creazione umana. È qualcosa al di sopra, di intoccabile e di intaccabile. COVID 19 is a big distraction to the environmental movement in Cameroon. To many, people COVID 19 presents a life threatening situation and requires more urgent action than environmental issues. I am a member of StopPlasticstoronto but I also belong to a local walking group so I decided to incorporate the two! When walking in local parks and ravines I carry my grabbers and a bag and cleanup what I can. This mess was the result of only four walks and I could have picked up much, much more but my bag filled quickly. And then it hit me...I cannot take responsibility for all of this plastic waste. A new enzyme ‘cocktail’ could help tackle plastic waste and recycling issues.⁠ ⁠ A team of scientists at the University of Portsmouth in England have developed a new “super enzyme” that can break down plastics up to six times faster than standard enzymes, according to a new research paper published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. ⁠ This combination of enzymes can speed up the decomposition process for the most common thermoplastic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used in single-use bottles, carpets, and clothing. A social distanced covid cleanup! Stopplastics did a trial run cleanup following all of the rules in these times of the corona virus. There were three of us...we each brought our own supplies, we distanced while walking and we cleaned up a mess of plastic waste. The cleanup took place in south Etobicoke along lakeshore blvd. and some side streets. It was blazing hot so our pace was slow. Nonetheless we managed to pick up a lot of stuff in the short time we were out there...lots of water bottles, candy wrappers, cigarette butts,plastic gloves and of course plastic bags. You can’t help but wonder how much of this stuff will make its way to our rivers and lake. As chuvadas dos últimos dias puseram em evidência algo que já se esperava: podemos agora encontrar no lixo marinho peças da época, como máscaras e luvas descartáveis. Havia muito outro plástico descartável, copos de todo o tipo incluindo os pequenos que vários cafés servem à porta, muito sacos transparentes e toalhitas de limpeza. E claro cotonetes e beatas. Tudo isto é transportado nas abundantes águas pluviais que se juntam aos esgotos e descarregado no meio aquático, acabando aos nossos pés nas praias. É particularmente preocupante o material contaminado que deve ser posto no lixo “normal” devidamente acondicionado. O resto do plástico tem de ir para o ecoponto amarelo!
