Our need for human connection, family, and belonging is a beautiful and holy need, yet due to the massive imbalances in our world, we are codependent with systems that ultimately are harmful to our personal and collective wellbeing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The good news is that we are in a period of shifting from codependency and the “power-over” paradigm to an interdependent and “power-with” paradigm. Even though this shift is messy and uncomfortable, we are doing powerful shadow work which will create more freedom and harmony for future generations. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It begins with you. We can talk about the macro world systems all day. We can talk about the damage of colonialism or capitalism, and we can talk about everything that is wrong with our world, but that’s not where the deeper, more impactful work exists. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The work is within you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s time to understand where your patterns, desires, morals, dreams, and fears come from. Time for some Pride History! William Dorsey Swann was a gay liberation activist. Born into slavery in 1858, they were the first person in the United States to lead a queer resistance group and the first known person to self-identify as a queen of drag. Imagine the queenery of this icon. They were a slave in Hancock, Maryland and were freed by Union soldiers after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. During the 1880s and 1890s, they organized a series of balls in Washington, D.C. Most of the attendees of these gatherings were assigned males, former slaves, gathering to dance in their satin and silk dresses. William was arrested in police raids numerous times, including in the first documented case of arrests for female impersonation in the United States, on April 12, 1888. In 1896, being FALSELY convicted and sentenced to 10 months in jail for keeping a disorderly house (running a brothel). After the sentencing, they requested a pardon from President Grover Cleveland. This request was denied, but William was the first American on record who pursued legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ communitys right to gather. They where known to have been close with Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall, two people who had also both been slaves. They formed the first known same-sex relationship between enslaved Americans. When William stopped organizing and participating in drag events, their sibling continued to make costumes for the drag community. Two of their siblings had also been active participants in his drag balls. Imagine how intelligent and ambitious William had to be to come up with drag balls in the 1800s! Imagine how many terrible concepts William had to unlearn by themselve to be a confident queer black person who does drag in the 1800s! Imagine how courageous they had to be to fight for lgbt people as a former slave in America in the 1800s! William Dorsey Swann is the original queen, the original drag mother, the original activist. 〰️ Women in Sound History: Dorothy Arzner and the birth of the Boom Mic 〰️ 🎥 Dorothy Arzner (1897 – 1979) is one of the most prolific directors of early American cinema, having worked with some of the biggest stars of the era including Katharine Hepburn and Joan Crawford in the 1920s and ‘30s. 📽 She is also the first woman to direct a film with sound. It was during such a project The Wild Party (1929) that Arzner is credited with inventing the boom microphone. To allow Clara Bow more freedom to move around the set, Arzner suspended a fishing rod above the actress and attached a microphone to the end of it. This prototype boom mic has become an essential piece of sound equipment for modern media production. For years, Ive been saying that Id like to photograph other people and for years Ive procrastinated in doing so, mostly out of fear of failure. Ironically, a global pandemic and lockdown seemed like the perfect time to start. Will Meharry Medical College and Nashville General Hospital Divorce? By Peter White NASHVILLE, TN — There is plenty of blame to go around. Mayor Megan Barry’s budget and the city council that approved it, only gave General Hospital $35 million of the $55 million it needed. That was last May. Since then, the marriage between Meharry and Nashville General Hospital went South. The medical school’s residents have trained at General for twenty-three years and the hospital has provided the patients to treat them. Shortly after attempts to increase General’s subsidy failed, Dr. Jan Brandes, Hospital Authority chair, met with Meharry’s CEO, James E.K. Hildreth, to discuss the imminent cutbacks at General. In a long overdue move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have set inclusion standards for best picture contenders, in an aim to diversify an infamously homogeneous Hollywood. ⠀ To be eligible for best picture, a film must meet at least two standards across four categories: “Onscreen Representation, Themes and Narratives,” “Creative Leadership and Project Team,” “Industry Access and Opportunities” and “Audience Development,” translating to featuring actors from underrepresented groups in significant roles or accounting for at least 30% of the cast, with similar criteria in terms of those working on the film behind the scenes; a significant commitment to paid apprenticeships, internships and career development; and significant representation among the teams devoted to marketing, publicity and distribution. ⠀ While only going into effect starting with the 2024 Academy Awards, this is a huge step forward in showcasing the tremendous talent of creatives of color whom are most often excluded by the gatekeepers of the industry.
