Stupas, Bhaja Caves, Maharashtra. A group of 14 stupas, five inside and nine outside. The stupas are relics of resident monks, who died at Bhaja, and display an inscription with the names of three monks, Ampinika, Dhammagiri and Sanghdina. The stupas have been carved very elaborately and two of them have a relic box on their upper side. Again, the Gemini are in the Orchard, Leonora Carrington, c. 1947. Leonora Carrington (1917- 2011) was a painter sculptor, novelist, and war refugee, best known for being a leading figure of the Surrealist movement. Born to a wealthy family of Lancashire, England, Carrington refused her elitist upbringing to pursue an artistic career. At the age of 20, she met her future lover, the artist Max Ernst, who introduced her to the members of the Surrealist movement in Paris. With the outbreak of World War Two, France became occupied by the Nazis, and Ernst was soon after arrested. During the occupation, Carrington fled to Spain where she suffered a mental breakdown, and as a result, she was confined to a mental asylum. Eventually, Carrington escaped from the institution and embarked into an odyssey which settled her in Mexico City in 1942. In Mexico, Carrington met with other European artists who also had escaped from the war. Here her artistic career flourished and eventually became known as an emblematic pillar of the Surrealist movement. Leonora Carrington died in Mexico at the age of 94 (2011), and many say she was the last Surrealist standing. The only Carrington exhibited in the Netherlands, Again, the Gemini are in the Orchard (1947), was acquired by the @boijmans in 2019 to provide a more representative scope of the Surrealist artists. He traveled a lot and portrayed scenes of daily life in the Middle East, Greece and Corsica.
