The Unseen Enemy: Differing Perspectives From the Front Line by @anoushkammaini Today, those aiding patients on the brink of death are often described as ‘front line’ staff. They bravely contribute to battling the pandemic. Anoushka was motivated to research the differing perspectives of those during another crisis: the First World War. In this article, Anoushka has chosen to explore the differing responses of two WWI painters, Otto Dix and Paul Nash. Both of these artists experienced the same conflict, witnessed very similar battlefield scenes and fought in near-identical geographical sectors of the Western Front – albeit as enemies on opposing sides. Yet their respective artistic reactions and output largely diverged from one another. “The beard signifies the courageous; the beard distinguishes the grown man, the earnest, the active, the vigorous. So that when we describe such, we say, he is a bearded man.” - St. Augustine of Hippo For many men during the mid-to-late 1800s facial hair became synonymous with masculinity, dignity, and power. During the Civil War, many men on both the Union and Confederate sides sported beards. Pictured are several men who fought and served here in Charleston. . . . . . . . . #napoleon #bonaparte #histoire #history #chateaudeversailles #versailles #france #monarchy #king #queen #secretsdhistoire #louisxvi #louisxiv #fontainebleau #paris #parisguide #parisphoto #chateau #palace #royal #royalty #monuments #castle #royalwedding #empereur #corse - @napoleonbonaparte_officiel on Instagram

Starting Thursday, June 18th at 7pm, for 24 hours Late Capital presents three videos by Suneil Sanzgiri, At the Top of Grasshoppers Hill (2016-17) The Reunion (2019) and AT HOME BUT NOT AT HOME (2019). The screening is freely accessible, though a link will be provided to make a $5 suggested donation to Brave Space Alliance. Brave Space Alliance is the first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ Center located on the South Side of Chicago, dedicated to creating and providing affirming, culturally competent, for-us by-us resources, programming, and services for LGBTQ individuals on the South and West sides of the city. PROGRAM INFO: total program length ~40 minutes, at flatland.online as well as twitch.tv/latecapital // Organized in three chapters, At the Top of Grasshoppers Hill (2016-17) examines overlapping narratives in Mexico City surrounding the Second French Empire’s invasion in Mexico in 1861 and the 1968 state-sponsored student massacre at Tlatelolco, tracing the densities and accruals of time, history, and memory, and the power structures and technologies that produce them as such. // On The Reunion (2019): Somewhere between the essayistic, experimental animation, and new manifesto for survival strategies in the age of climate catastrophe, this short film resuscitates the memory of the lost society through an excavation of its ruins and its contemporary namesake, moving through hallucinatory visions of climate disaster, and footage from a sci-fi epic written by Ursula K. Le Guin — filmed in The Reunion Tower itself. // AT HOME BUT NOT AT HOME (2019) Combining 16mm footage with drone videography, montages from the Parallel cinema movement in India, desktop screengrabs, and Skype interviews with my father, the resulting film utilizes various methods and modes of seeing at a distance to question the construction of artifice, memory, and identity through the moving image. // Suneil Sanzgiri is an artist, researcher, filmmaker, and video journalist working to understand how systems of oppression are informed and reinforced by trauma, history, and memory. - @late__capital on Instagram
