My beloved father has suddenly and unexpectedly passed away yesterday. He was taken too soon from us and I am so sad that he didn’t get a chance to meet and get to hold his first ever future grandson. He now will be watching and guiding his children and grandchildren from heaven and will make sure they behave and make the right choices. . My father was a simple man and avoided any risk. He was so old-fashioned that he never wanted to have a cell phone nor a credit card. His motto was: “If I don’t have the money to buy something then I simply don’t buy it, I don’t need a credit card!” . He was a fighter, a perfectionist, and a bit of a pessimist. He always gave me so much advice and I so often didn’t listen and did the polar opposite. He was always so mad at me when it turned out that he was right as he never wanted to see me in trouble or get hurt by my sometimes stupid and not so thought-through actions. His favorite words to me were: “Claus, Du musst ruhiger werden, Du bist zu Hektik.” I must have heard that from him a thousand times.😌 . He is again reunited with his beloved wife in heaven even though I doubt that my mother was quite ready for him so soon. Let the bickering continue again.😂 . I will miss you very much and hope that you’re finally at peace as I know that you missed your wife very much and felt lost without her. We promise you that we all will make you very proud and will carry on your legacy, beliefs and values that you have ingrained in us. You were the best dad your three sons could have wished for 🙌🏻. A new study from MIT Sloan professor Pierre Azoulay and co-researchers finds that when it comes to entrepreneurship in America, “immigrants appear to be more entrepreneurial than the native-born, and their firms create a lot of jobs. To study the impact of immigration on entrepreneurship, the researchers analyzed three datasets, which represent more than 1 million businesses. Not only are immigrants 80% more likely to start a business than those born in the U.S., the number of jobs created by these immigrant-founded firms is 42% higher than native-born founded firms, relative to each population. “The fact that the numbers are what they are, at least should make you worry that if you close the country to immigration and if you make the life of immigrants harder than it needs to be once theyre here, it makes it plausible that this might have negative repercussions on entrepreneurship writ large, and for job creation,” Azoulay said. Wanna tell a fukn’ story about vision. We are not chefs & never claimed to be. Although some of our crew are, & are better than us in many ways. We just desired to eat this way, a plant-based diet. We came from egoic industries prior that were more based on looks that valued materialism & youth. We desired deep healing & thus our bond was formed, many moons ago, from the innate want to feel good within ourselves, & to do good for others, in a purely selfless way. Came across this pic from our first experience working in a professional kitchen setting. This was what once was Portobellos commissary kitchen, 12 years ago. We shared space with 5 other vegan businesses, including a restaurant. We had one table & one rack to work from. We were graciously offered unlimited access to the space at a very generous rate, which we paid for in trade with our famed raw cannolis that we sold through the restaurant. Anybody remember? Thank you Chef @aaronpatrickadams 🙏🏼 We took full advantage of that ability to work tirelessly. Having no experience beyond home cooking & straight fire energy to keep moving forward, we busted A nonstop. That drive & determination remains. Looking back over the years, moving with sheer blind free will, & with the support of our community here in Portland, it’s truly amazing to see how far we have come. Everything we have dreamed of, has come to pass. Of course we didn’t dream of sleepless nights, the 16+ hour work days, the financial struggles, the unending barriers to entry. & of course we didn’t dream of what has transpired with 2020. However, we have held steadfast to our vision, & to the broader scope of our dreams. To being a business of integrity, moving consciously, being some sort of light & pathway for others whom are on their healing journeys. It’s been a wild ride. Looking back at the photos, the emails, the trials & tribulations..now it’s more fondly. It’s smiles over tears. Even though, there were plenty of tears. ImmDef Attorney, Neysa Nankervis, Paralegal, Alejandra Aguilar Ruiz and our support team have been working tirelessly to guarantee Tesfays safe refuge in the United States. Tesfay is a brave 18 year old from Eritrea. He was tortured for several days because authorities erroneously claimed he was passing out anti-military and anti-government pamphlets. At the young age of 14, Tesfay set out on a ten month journey, traveling through more than 10 countries in hopes of finding refuge in the US. He spent more than 5 months trekking through Sudan, often hiding in tiny compartments with other children and women. It was nearly impossible to breathe. At one point, smugglers tossed all of Tesfay belongings into the ocean. He had nothing but the clothes on his back. Tesfays bravery is representative of the caliber of contributions that our clients, and all asylum seekers and refugees bring to the United States. On March 9th, high school and university students from various institutions across New York attended a somber commencement ceremony about the futures we are unlikely to have in the shadow of the climate crisis. Mouths were taped to symbolize the lack of student voice in educational decision making and our institutions’ refusal to listen to student concerns about climate. Too often education puts profits and prestige first, indoctrinating individuals into a colonial, neoliberal, and extractavist system that ignores both human and planetary limits.
