After all these long and hard past few months, RHR has finally decided to re-open! Our TENTATIVE re-opening date is Thursday, September 10th, 2020. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us since we have closed. Things will look very differently when we re-open. Everyone will be required to wear masks at all times and will be spread apart when they’re in the building in compliance with social distancing guidelines. All students and clients will also be required to have their temperature checked consistently. With all that said, we do know that our plans are still a work in progress, and that we will need to continually adapt as we monitor the situation. Before we re-open though, we are going to need your help! Starting next Monday, we will have a 3-week long fundraiser that will help us provide the cleaning supplies to maintain the safety of our students and staff. Specifically, your donation will supply us with enough paper towels, disinfectant wipes, a HEPA vacuum, thermometers, masks, hand soaps, hand sanitizers, and other supples we may need. Here’s what to do if you witness an arrest at a protest: 1. Write down the name and DOB of the person being apprehended by police. This info can be provided to jail support to help locate them after they’ve been processed. 2. Ask the arresting officer(s) the reason for the arrest, continue asking if they do not respond. You can also take down the officers name and badge numbers if visible. 3. Observe and take note of any violence, excessive force, or illegal restraints by arresting officer(s). 4. If the apprehended person has someone trustworthy nearby, allow that person to collect their property (phone, keys, etc). This may speed up processing times. 5. Stay with the person being apprehended until the arrest is complete and/or they leave the area. 6. Contact @baltlegal for jail support. ・・・ With SoS Assembly, we are now starting a gathering of local artists, cultural practitioners, thinkers and activist structures in the format of a process-based exchange of ideas, sentiments, and values of solidarity. From 12th to 14th November 2020, a social and discursive platform shall be created in the framework of SoS (Soft Solidarity), the eponymous two-year exhibition program at Galerie Wedding – Space for Contemporary Art (2019-20) which functions as a membrane between daily life, art, and politics in the neighbourhood. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Background: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During the lockdown, we, as a curatorial team behind SoS Assembly, Övül Ö. Taken from the cross-party call for the Government to ensure that all children entitled to free school meals have internet access and adequate devices at home, of which Turn2us and a host of MPs and other charities are signatories: Access to the internet and technology has been vital during the lockdown. It has enabled many households to remain in contact with friends and family, to take part in online exercise classes, and to continue learning and studying despite the closure of schools. But this lifeline has not been available for all, with schools across the country reporting struggling families who do not have internet access at home. Those children who can’t access the same resources as their classmates will find themselves even further behind when they return to school. There is a risk that some may never catch up. The lockdown has exposed that there are at least 700,000 disadvantaged children who do not have proper access to computers or the internet and who are not completing their homework. Research by the Sutton Trust revealed that in the most deprived schools, 15% of teachers report that more than a 1/3 of their students would not have adequate access to an electronic device for learning from home. Now we are aware of the size of the digital divide and the implication it will have on the education and opportunity for many of the most vulnerable children in our society, we believe that there must be an obligation to ensure that these children have access to the internet at home. This policy is not a silver bullet. It will not fully close the digital divide or make up for months away from school. But it would make an immediate, tangible difference to some of the most vulnerable families in our society. A note: I have been guilty of perpetuating grind culture with my students too. Now that I know better, I aim to do better. . I remember being a student and when I finished an assignment, there was always extra work waiting for me, usually in the form of a worksheet. I absolutely resented this as a kid. . When the pandemic began, I saw many people sharing about their productivity, and it became clear that most of us internalize “grind culture.” We believe that busy is better, that our worth is determined by our productivity. Capitalism THRIVES on this mentality. If we’re not producing 24/7, we are failing ourselves and our potential. This mentality is not humanizing. It does not honor our students for who they are, and what they are experiencing. . Teaching middle school and having self-paced work time with kids has made me realize just how early we embed grind culture into our society and how we’re harming young people. When your students are done with an assignment, do you acknowledge their effort and encourage them to rest, or do you push them on to the next task? . Today when my students asked me what they should do when they complete an assignment and have revised and made corrections, I sent them a guided meditation and encouraged them to read for fun, or just take a break and do something joyful. Indigenous Peoples are still here and we wont stop standing behind them to ensure that their land, culture and languages remain for all Indigenous children. #EveryChildMatters • • • • • • Orange Shirt Day is a day of remembrance for those who were forced to attend the government-ran residential schools and a moment to bring awareness to this dark moment in the not-so-distant past. These residential schools were sprinkled in both Canada and the United States and were thought to be a solution for ‘kill the Indian, save the man’. Children who were forced into these institutions were torn from their families, ripped of their cultural traditions and languages, and made to assimilate. As if that wasn’t horrible enough, the overcrowding, lack of medical care, abuse, malnutrition, and other unhealthy conditions led to many deaths and long term traumatic consequences. While these residential schools no longer exist in formality, the amount of Indigenous children in foster care or in government hands at the border is keeping this malicious spirit alive. Just a friendly reminder that school this year is not business as usual! I know there are big expectations and pressure on teachers right now but please, we must adapt our practices. So many of my students responded to a check-in saying they were stressed out because many of their teachers were giving daily assignments when the class only meets twice a week. Why? For who? I for one, do not have the capacity to read through and grade multiple weekly assignments (I never do but that’s beside the point lol), so why would we expect students to complete such large amounts of work? College students only take 4 classes per semester, most of our secondary students are taking 6! Before I begin, trolling messages are crappy to deal with, but I’m fine. I promise. Who would have thought that so many people reject the idea of rest? . I wasn’t planning on making this a series, but since some folx have deeply internalized grind culture, I think these messages are also useful in recognizing how grind culture manifests. . When I tap into my non violent communication tools, I hear a LOT of needs. The need for praise, the need to feel worthy based on the quantity being produced- not the quality. I know it can also be hard when we have to face things about ourselves that we’re not proud of, and how defensive we can become because we crave feeling good about ourselves. . Capitalism isn’t just an economic systemic. It’s a state of mind, based in ownership, production, and profit. Public schools were designed to create a pathway into upholding this system. Schools were never intended to liberate anyone. The challenge is unlearning what has been normalized, and dreaming of something better that has yet to exist. . I do want to specifically address the 2nd comment about managing students. Teachers, please stop trying to control your students. It is beyond harmful, and they will never fully trust or respect you. As my friend @kshelton says, “management” implies trying to control something that was never yours to begin with. I encourage you to learn from folx like @britthawthorne and think about how you’re creating an ecosystem, not a top-down method of control. - @teachandtransform on Instagram

This month started off as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1988 and is now a month of recognizing the contributions of Hispanic/Latin(x) Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the US. Celebrating several Latin American countries’ independence days as well like, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The time frame dedicated to this month also includes Mexico’s independence day on September 16 and Chile’s independence day on September 18. To be an ally is to act for an underrepresented community. Talk to your farmer about purchasing imperfect, funny and wonky looking produce and reduce food wasted and lost. An easy way of using cosmetically imperfect carrots is soups, roasts, stocks, carrot cakes and depending on your knife skills even salads. Quick soup recipe for a carrot & orange soup 500g “ugly carrots” 1 tbs oil 1 chopped onion Celery/leek (stalk and leaves if you have them) 3 pods garlic chopped 2 1/2 inch ginger sliced/chopped 1/2 cup of orange juice (freshly squeezed, preserve rind for another quick recipe) 4 cups vegetable broth (recipe with vegetable odds and ends coming soon) 1/2 tsp turmeric 1 tsp cumin 1 green chilli chopped Salt to taste Method- In a stock pot, brown the garlic, onions, celery, leek and ginger, add the spices, Add the coarsely chopped carrots, orange juice and broth, bring to a boil and then cover and let simmer for 25-30 mins. Lilian outlived two of her long-term skating partners. A “tail” of compassion... Aaron is a friend from Australia and we are both crazy about dogs. Aaron and his mom - both - have several rescued dogs at home. Believe you me, their home is what my dream home would be like - a beautiful space with a huge garden and dogs all over. I was very overwhelmed when Aaron showed appreciation for my work and expressed his interest to contribute in some way. He returned used bottles and cans and started collecting cash for the NGO - a smart way to support not one but two causes - animals and the environment. ToC is not supported by any corporate but by individual donors only. And people like Aaron give me hope. It is these acts of kindness from fellow animal lovers and kind humans that enable us to be better at what we do and save more lives.
