Pangolin Specialist Group member, Professor Wu Shibao, who has worked in pangolin conservation for over 25 years, talks to the South China Normal University about Chinas recent announcement upgrading pangolins to the highest level of protection and is positive about the impact the protections will have on pangolins. Chinese pangolins are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. According to Professor Wu Shibao, the species has declined by up to 95% and Chinese pangolins are now rarely seen in the wild. He hopes the new level of protection will raise awareness of pangolins and help populations recover. . Sloth bears are important seed dispersers for several tree and plant species. They scatter the seeds of the fruits they eat far and wide, helping floral species to regenerate. However, they can also disperse seeds without consuming them. We started noticing in our camera-trap images that tens of seeds would be stuck on the shaggy coats of these bears and their cubs! Unfortunately, these seeds could also belong to invasive plant species. #indianwildlife #slothbears #iucn #seeddispersers #wildkarnata #natureinfocus #bears #naturephotography #cameratrapping #nature #natureinindia #indiannature - @sanjay.gubbi on Instagram

Up to 75 per cent of human infectious diseases that have recently emerged are known or are suspected to have originated from animals. Bats are the source of many of them, but in most cases another carrier is needed to transmit them to humans. The latest and most serious of these threats, SARS-CoV-2, has infected us through a pangolin, the worlds most trafficked mammal, sold in a wet market in Wuhan, China. We knew that nature was going to fight back. We anticipated that the ice melting was going to increase the sea level, the pollution was going to produce us lounge cancer, the destruction of the ozone field was going to cause skin cancer and many other problems. But we didnt expect that something as apparently irrelevant as the wildlife trade, that was only endangering biodiversity, could be able to provoke a health crisis like this coronavirus outbreak. And were all paying for it, because we looked the other way. - @thegreenwars on Instagram

The Olympic Cougar Project may be a misleading name, as we are also collecting data on bobcats for Pantheras small cat program, in conjunction with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. Here, one of our remote cameras captured an image of a bobcat and their prize, a mountain beaver. Mountain beavers, also known as aplodontia, boomers or sewellel are endemic rodents to the coastal forests of the north western United States and British Columbia. Mountain beavers were named by the colonist miners of the Seirra Nevadas for the way they trim branches and saplings in the same fashion as their namesake, the american beaver. (Maser, Chris.
