The roaring 20s & the Art Deco era were sources of great creativity for Vacheron Constantin, it is therefore of little surprise to note that the brand’s first skeleton watch dates from 1924. 🤩 💎 It is however not “simply” a skeleton pocket watch (with caliber RA 17’’’, the same found in the first Chronomètre Royal models) but one in a rock crystal case circled in a platinum ring and set with Burmese sapphires! 🤤 However, the object of this post is ref 43032 a superbly sophisticated and elegant extra slim perpetual calendar launched in 1994 at a time where skeleton work was not yet seen. 💀 @VacheronConstantin decided to apply the delicate art of skeletonizing and engraving to the ref 43031 which was the brand’s first perpetual calendar wristwatch launched in 1983, it showed the brand’s attachment to mechanical watchmaking in the wake of the quartz crisis and is a tribute to the brand’s perpetual calendar pocket watches especially with its 48 month cycle. 🎖️ Ref 43032 is a potent mix of Vacheron Constantin’s prowess and expertise: it features the ultra slim cal 1120 which for almost half a century from its launch in 1968 the world’s thinnest automatic movement upon which a perpetual calendar module had been added. 🧐 The movement’s plates and bridges were delicately hollowed and superbly hand engraved. THE GLYCINE AIRMAN IN BRIEF – While Glycine is often overlooked by collectors today, they did have a great success in the mid-20th century, competing with the likes of Rolex and Omega to dominate the tool watch sector. One of those tool watches, the Airman, went head to head with the GMT-Master in the 1950s. . At the time of the Airman’s release the need for a particular kind of pilot watch was ever-increasing. Pilots wanted features like a 24-hour bezel, a waterproof case, and a self-winding movement. In came the Glycine Airman, which was released in 1953 to a strong reception. The first Glycine Airmans had ‘AM’ and ‘PM’ written on the dial and featured a double crown. Uniquely, the Airman had an early example of a locking mechanism to allow alternative time zones to be tracked. These Airmans were powered by a 23 jewel, automatic Felsa movement, that was later changed for A. Schild movements in the 1960s. For the American market, the Airman Special was released, which instead had a 17 jewel Felsa movement. . Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s, the Airman went through different transitions, with funky case shapes in the 1960s and quartz movements in the late 1970s. Notably, in 1968, Glycine released the first Airman Chronograph, with the SST Chronograph. SST stood for SuperSonic Transport, and was named after the Boeing SST, the first American super sonic plane project; started to compete with rivals like the Russians. Unfortunately, the project by Boeing was scrapped by 1971, and the SST Chronograph also didn’t last long as its Valjoux 72 now competed with automatic chronographs. . Today, the Airman is still in rotation, and after surviving the Quartz Attack with some awkward quartz models in the 1970s, has come a long way from a simple conversation between a company executive and a commercial airline pilot back in the early ‘50s. . Single handedly the best release of 2020 and the best Homage series so far - Big applause to Glashütte! Some of you might remember that in recent years I was quite critical towards the change in A. Lange & Söhnes execution for special editions. To me, it is clear that after 2010 the brand almost completely shied away from experimenting, or launching special editions that were made from the ground-up with truly distinguished complications, designs etc.. The breaking point in my book was the 165th year collection - again in the name of F.A. Lange; which I still think is one of the most underwhelming sets that Lange has launched. Beautiful for sure; but not special enough for the lack of a better term. This year however, as if the brilliant team at Glashütte wanted to balance it out, they came up with absolute bombs. Tourbograph, for sure. There is no combination in the world that would make that watch less special than it is. Simply impossible. 1815 Enamel, brilliant piece; a watch I wanted to see since the launch of 1815 Tourbillon Enamel - but I think needs a bit more color (more on that later); but this one here... One of the best releases in years. It is wearable, characteristic, not overly crowded... More importantly, as discussed with @just.watch.me.now a Lange rarely feels sexy. This one exudes it. The combination of pink gold / black dial has always been a winner for Lange - but honey gold took it to the next level. The golden markers and indices as well as the red three-dots on each 15 minutes are such good choices. Glashutte in Sachsen inscription is such a beautiful touch - reminding the old pocket watches. See the Lot 30 from @sothebyswatches auction of Lange pocket watches. The movement feels like a much better fit due to reduced size compared to 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual. The choice of the granular finish technique perfectly complements the shine of honey gold. Just so well done! I just have one wish: I hope Lange does not put this into serial production and leaves it as it is - a truly limited and a special edition for the anniversary... The movement features one single barrel, located beneath the upper bridge, that provides energy to two separate geartrains, via a central differential. . Once the energy is split, it is further regulated by the use of two « remontoir d’égalité » or constant force devices (one for each geartrain). The remontoir d’égalité acts as an intermediary spring that ensures that the energy that reaches the escapement is always constant regardless of how wound the mainspring is. ORIGINS OF THE UNIVERSAL GENÈVE TRI-COMPAX – The story of the Tri-Compax is somewhat jumbled up. Starting with the year of its release – 1944 – which was a particularly tumultuous year for the world. D-Day, the liberation of Paris and Guam, and Iwo Jima, were just some of the wild ongoings of 1944. . Also, in 1944, over in neutral Switzerland, Baselworld was alive and well. That year, at the famous trade fair, Universal Genève released the Tri-Compax, right at the end of the Second World War. . The Tri-Compax is part of the wider Compax collection from Universal Genève, which started up in 1936 with the Compax (although the similar Compur was released a couple years earlier). The Tri-Compax was the pinnacle of the Compax collection and is named after its three functions of calendar, chronograph, and moonphase. It was a technical marvel upon its release and a successful watch for the brand. Early models used the Universal Genève Cal. 287 and 481, which were modified Martel movements, also shared with Zenith at the time. It is worthwhile to note that the Cal. 287 is supposed to be the same as the Zenith Cal. 156, while the Universal Genève Cal. 481 is based off of the earlier Cal. 281; which would coincide with the Zenith 122. Zenith would have been a customer of Universal Genève at the time, who had a close and uncertain relationship with Martel. Although it is clear that Martel made movements for Universal Genève, it must be said that Martel’s role in Universal Genève’s movement making has been a point of contention and confusion. Some sources indicate that Universal Genève’s chronograph production was entirely in-house throughout the 1930s and 1940s…but patents (retrieved from a famous Watchuseek thread) show otherwise. Moreover, it is possible that Universal Genève held stock of Martel’s or may have had an exclusive deal for their chronograph movements. In any event, the key fact is that Martel did make movements for Universal Genève…Full story on our website! . A timepiece developed to measure incredibly fast speeds of up to 1/100th of a second, The F.P.Journe Centigraphe. What makes the Centigraphe a true technical innovation is not the fact it can simply measure such fast speeds, but that it does so using a 3 Hz movement, retaining the 10.4 mm balance wheel that François-Paul Journe uses for all his movements in pursuit of chronometric performance. The three subdials are calibrated to different speeds as indicated respectively; making one revolution per second, one revolution every 20 seconds, and one revolution every 10 minutes. To the untrained eye, this might appear to be caliber 1304, which can be found in our F.P.Journe Chronomètre Souverain and Chronomètre Bleu. . This however is caliber 1408, which powers the F.P.Journe Répétition Souveraine, our minute repeater. . It appears almost identical to caliber 1304 as that was François-Paul Journe’s way of having “fun” with the development of this movement. He wanted to challenge himself by creating an entirely integrated minute repeater movement, yet visually indistinguishable from one of his other much less complicated calibers. . The movement itself measures only 4.00 mm in height, meaning it is only 0.25 mm thicker than caliber 1304, resulting in an ultra-thin minute repeater. . In addition, the movement benefits from two barrels mounted in parallel for unmatched stability in its power delivery, making it a highly performant chronometer. . Our Watches Online Sale Highlight: Audemars Piguet manufactured their first minute repeating wristwatch in 1907 for the renowned American industrialist John Schaeffer. This customized pioneer version was housed in a cushion-shaped case, the numerals on the dial were personalized with the letters of his name instead of numerals. In the early 1990s, Audemars Piguet launched the “John Shaeffer” limited edition series, paying tribute to the original “coussin tortue” or “cushion turtle” design. ⠀ . The “Star Wheel” system was invented by the firm at the same period, including different variations of “wandering hour” wristwatches. Three transparent sapphire disks, or star wheels, each inscribed with four hour indicators are attached to a rotating center wheel. As the assembly turns, the indicator for the actual hour is rotated into view and then passed across a 120-degree minutes sector. The time is read by noting the visible hour pointing to the current minute. Each disk is obscured until it rises into the arc where the background contrasts the digits into legibility. Grana may not be a well-known name to collectors of contemporary watches, but for vintage watch enthusiasts, the brand is known for its rich history linked to Certina – a major watchmaking company now part of the Swatch Group. Founded in 1888, Certina began using the name “Grana” in 1906, which is an abbreviation of “Granatus” – the Latin name for Grenchen where the company was founded. Fitted with a prestigious split-seconds function, the large 38 mm case still retains extraordinarily crisp facets to the lugs. The featured chronograph watches must be considered one of the finest that ever left the Certina factories. Grana chronographs with black dials are known to have been issued to several European Air Forces, notably, watches with Hungarian inscriptions have surfaced. Many will attribute the name Grana to the infamous “Dirty Dozen” military watches, out of the 145,000 “Dozens” produced, it is estimated that only 1000 - 1,500 were from Grana’s opposed to Record or Omega who supplied around 25,000 each making Grana’s exceptionally sought after. Split second pilots chronograph in image 1 sold in 2016 by @phillipswatches for just over £72,000. Whilst a similar Grana split second chronograph in image 4 sold in November 2019 by @christieswatches for just over £16,500. A Grana Dirty Dozen military watch will set you back in the region of £7000. Well folks, it’s been a long time coming. When I first visited the Armin Strom manufacture back in 2014, I knew that sooner or later, I would own one of their pieces. Fast-forward 6 years, and here we are! The Gravity Equal Force is a special piece for a couple reasons. It’s not only an ingenious take on an automatic movement, but also a huge leap for the independent brand in terms of developing and fine-tuning their design language. Working on this piece was a fun, creative exercise for the folks at Armin Strom and I. Not that my ideas were too far out there, but they never turned down any of my suggestions. Everything was possible and up to the imagination. And I couldn’t be happier with the end result... Purposefully simple and stripped-back, its fully visible movement unveils a perfectly symmetrical design. In the new Tradition Quantième Rétrograde 7597 model, it also features a retrograde date display, a complication that the watchmaker was one of the first to develop, and which it has bestowed on some of its most famous creations. This novelty features an hours chapter with Roman numerals, bordered by a delicate engine-turned Clous de Paris pattern, which serves as a backdrop for blued Breguet hands. In the interests of balance, a retrograde date section is positioned between the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock and a skillfully curved hand indicates the date moving in the vertical plane, fitting in with the ultra-architectural movement. A patented mechanism provides for a fine adjustment of the date hand. The latter is multi-tiered, allowing it to fly over the movement components. The Octa Chronographe 🕵🏽♂️ François Paul described this dial as the inverted sock. I do believe that this design paved the way for the precious dials (mainly found on the TN) to be split in two due to their fragility.
