🎞📠📜🖋 ‘Rites of Passage’ went through multiple iterations before reaching final form. The original concept incorporated my attempt at aphorisms, or phrases for living, on living. The kind you find yourself imbued with when reflecting on your rites of passage. Being the sentimentalist I am, I thought I’d share the series depicting this concept, in its #wip stage, to release these words to the world after they’d spent all those nights in my mind. But because my skin is black, there’s no leaving this body, and no escaping this identity just like many black individuals who are of queer experience. I think it’s important that we keep celebrating black trans, black womxn and black queer lives because even in the face of adversity we continue to rise and shine. Coming together to help and support our black siblings in times of need, although there’s people in our own communities who don’t find our black lives worth living. BLACK LIVES won’t matter until black trans lives, black womxn lives, black queer lives, black disabled lives, black sex worker lives matter etc. - AKA ALL BLACK LIVES, no matter what. We are all black and all face adversity in different ways just because we live at the intersection of repressed identities doesn’t mean that we don’t deserve solidarity, when can we unite to fight for the bigger picture and to restore balance and peace to the world. To remove racism from the structure of life as we know it, by destroying the system and building a new one, will need everyone in our community to participate in vital roles. Keep fighting, keep protesting, keep signing petitions, keep educating yourself and others, keep donating your money to black causes businesses and organizations only. The video for ‘Black Blood Red Kiss’ featuring the multi-talented, and super lovely @TheKatVonD will be released on Tuesday 8th September. Kat brought some epic magic to this track with her vocal performance…she said “I’ve always been a fan of dark wave and synth heavy bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure and IAMX, so when I heard Gunship for the first time, it was all the things I loved rolled into one band. Gunship is by far my favorite synth wave band because they always marry nostalgic synth sounds with dark and melancholy lyrics that strikes me at my core. The first Gunship song I ever heard was “The Mountain” and I remember driving all the guys at my tattoo shop crazy by playing it on repeat for weeks! I think it’s safe to say that I’m probably the biggest Gunship fan out there, so when they asked me to sing on “Black Blood Red Kiss” I was half excited and half intimidated! But once I heard the demo, it felt like a perfect match made in heaven [or hell].😂” “I had such a blast working on the video for “Black Blood Red Kiss.” I mean, who doesn’t enjoy bathing in a full body nylon catsuit in a bathtub full of black water for hours?! The only downside to making the video, aside from getting black gunk stuck in every part of my body, was not being able to film it in the same room with the band. Sure, I got some scratches from today’s protest, a stun grenade exploded on my foot, and got tear gassed like 5 times....but this is nothing compared to the consistent systemic racism and oppression of people of color. I am completely okay, I have the luxury to be okay and alive today. You know who’s doesn’t have that luxury? George Floyd. And all the innocent black people who have been murdered at the hand of police violence. There needs to be accountability in our “justice” system. Where is the justice? I don’t condone protester violence, but shit, more is being done now than ever because of this violence. Hate me if you want, but this is a sad truth. And for you at home... it might be inconvenient to go out of your way to help a cause that might not affect you directly. But I bet it was more than inconvenient for George Floyd to get murdered.
