Under the title MADONNA CHILDREN the Grafikkabinett in the Kunstmuseum Basel Hauptbau will be showing a hitherto unexplored facet of the museums history by means of the rich archive material. On view until 24 January 2021. Encouraged by Margaret, Princess of Hesse and near the Rhine, the government council of the canton of Basel-Stadt enabled 20 Darmstadt children aged between seven and thirteen to spend four weeks a year in Davos between 1953 and 1958. The new loans to be granted for this purpose formed a payment for the loan of the so-called “Darmstadt Madonna” by Hans Holbein the Younger to the Kunstmuseum Basel. On their journey from Darmstadt to Davos, the Madonna Children made regular stops at the Kunstmuseum Basel to view the painting. In addition to the Dresden painting, however, there was another version, which - after its later place of storage – is called the Darmstadt Madonna, also to distinguish the two versions from each other. In the 19th century, the question of which of the two versions was the original gave rise to the so-called Holbein dispute among artists, art historians and laymen. While artists and laymen clearly saw the original in the Dresden version, art historians finally came to the conclusion that the Darmstadt painting was the original. Meanwhile, the Dresden copy is attributed to Bartholomäus Sarburgh. Happy first day of fall 🍁! French artist Georges Lacombe’s “Autumn: The Chestnut Gatherers” (1894) celebrates seasonal change, with a fiery palette that evokes the harvest in a decorative, wooded landscape. The women’s stylized poses and provincial costumes present the scene as timeless and dreamlike, rather than reflective of the realities of peasant life. Autumn is one of an unfinished series of four paintings that depict the seasons. Measuring just 6 ½ by 8 ⅜ inches,`Abraham and the Angels’ is a profoundly beautiful, gem-like painting on panel that stands among the finest works by #Rembrandt ever to come to auction. Of the total 136 biblical paintings Rembrandt produced, the present work is one of only five remaining in private hands, with the large majority in prominent museum collections. Among these biblical paintings, only 29 depict Old Testament scenes, with the present panel representing one of only two examples in private collections. Painted in 1646, during an emotionally-turbulent yet highly productive period of his life, ‘Abraham and the Angels’ depicts the precise moment when God, the principal source of light in the scene, reveals to Abraham that his elderly wife Sarah will bear him a son, Isaac, within a year. In addition to being one of the most well-documented paintings by Rembrandt in existence, this work also boasts an impeccable provenance, nearly unbroken from the year after its execution to the present day. No funeral, Hugo recebe uma carta de seu pai à sua mãe, com revelações contradizendo tudo que ele achava que sabia sobre a história dos pais. Ele vai então atrás de respostas sobre sua origem, revirando o passado em uma jornada que envolve traição, mentiras, amor e uma misteriosa criança. ⠀ O enredo é narrado sob dois pontos de vista: o passado de Olaf, em 1943, e o presente de Hugo, em 2006, e os capítulos tendem a finalizar em partes curiosas, que prendem o leitor ao enredo e fazem com que sigamos a leitura em busca de respostas. É um livro multigênero, transitando entre romance histórico com fantasia, visto que há uma singular personagem, em torno da qual a trama é tecida, que possuía o dom de realizar milagres. Além disso, no afã de conhecer suas origens, Hugo embarca em uma trama frenética e perigosa, que traz os ares de um thriller. Além de ser uma história nua e crua sobre as já conhecidas maldades nazistas, é também uma história sobre perdão, amor, família, recomeços, coisas de que gosto em um livro, mas tenho uma ressalva considerável a fazer nessa obra. ⠀ O modo como o perdão foi trazido me incomodou bastante. Concordo que há pessoas com o dom de superação e de perdão maior do que outras, mas do jeito como foi trazido, tive a sensação de que “banalizou” o ato atroz que houve contra uma personagem. A mesma sensação de que não era “tão difícil” viver nessa época tão cruel, que tive em outro livro há pouco tempo. Foi uma leitura que me agradou sim, ela fluiu rapidamente, a escrita é boa, foi o primeiro livro de um autor brasileiro que li sobre a temática do nazismo e ele é bem estruturado, mas esse fato em especial tirou um pouco do brilho da obra pra mim. Recomendo para quem gosta de histórias de recomeços pois, apesar da ressalva feita, me arrisco a dizer que é uma obra que tende a agradar a maioria dos leitores. ⠀ - @ceuliterario on Instagram

𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁. 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 St. Vincent de Paul was born to a poor family in a French village in the late 1500s. He was ordained in 1600, having been educated by the Franciscans, before being captured by pirates and sold as a slave. Having escaped two years later, St. Vincent de Paul would go on to found the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians, or Lazarists); visiting, preaching, feeding, and nursing the sick poor. He established hospitals, and with St. Louise de Marillac, cofounded the Daughters of Charity, the first non-cloistered religious institue of women devouted to active charitable works. Vincent de Paul also helped reform the clergy in France, conducting retreats, providing clerical training, and being instrumental in establishing seminaries. Referred to as The Apostle of Charity, and The Father of the Poor, like Vincent de Paul, we too are called to help those around us, and as patron of all charitable societies, let us pray to St. Vincent de Paul, for all such charities and the work they carry out. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic charitable organisation dedicated to the service of the poor, was founded by Blessed Antoine Frédéric Ozanam in 1833.
