Last week, four museums in the US and the UK announced they would postpone a traveling Philip Guston exhibition to 2024 due to concerns about the reception of Ku Klux Klan imagery he employed in some works. As the art world debates the decision, were thinking about an essay our January-February 1978 essay, in which @robertasmithnyt addresses what was then the biggest controversy around Gustons work: his shift from abstraction to figuration in the late 1960s. Some may see this as a self-indulgent or regressive move, but in his own reclusive, schizophrenic, fragmented way, Guston is contemporary, Smith writes. His recent output is his most authentic work; it makes fullest use of his knowledge and his personality and, despite its many tie-ins with and quotations from older art, it could only have been made now. 🖌️ link in bio #philipguston #robertasmith #painting #modernart - @artinamerica on Instagram

#gouachepainting #painting #artist #artteacher #chinalife #artistlife #artteachersofinstagram - @shultslava_art on Instagram

Albert Oehlen, Die Pfeifenden von (The Whistlers of), 2001 Featured in Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale in Hong Kong on July 9th Est. Us $1,800,000- 3,100,100 “Qualities that I want to see brought together: delicacy and coarseness, color and vagueness, and, underlying them all, a base note of hysteria.” #AlbertOehlen Oehlen pushes the basic components of abstract to new levels, exploring expressive brushwork, surrealism, and the self-consciousness. Oehlen deconstructed painting into its most basic elements: color, form, and movement. His artistic process evolved as technology did, when his work began to explore the use of inkjet printers and computer design programs. As new challenges arose, Oehlen continued to persevere and push his boundaries of creating by limiting his pallet and experimenting with collage and spray paint on large-scaled works. He confidently strayed away from the traditional rules of painting and found beauty in the awkward gestures, artificial pigments, and muddy tones, often leaving what many viewed as outrageous messes. Jostling his even biggest fans to entertain their own perception of what is meant to be “good”. However, what one can agree on is that Oehlen’s works radiate a long-lasting energy that possess a beauty of its own. Within the muddiness, your eye picks up on the tender pinks, neon yellows, and dreamy purples. Although, a true collector might say the real beauty lies within the artist’s continuous struggle for self-improvement, plagued by his own imposter syndrome. Oehlen, like many artists, is his own worst critic, although his most celebrated life’s work was accomplished once he reached the utmost freedom with his “No Fucks Given” attitude. @Sotheby @Gagosian #sothebys #sothebyshongkong #gagosian #contemporaryartist #curator #artcollector #contemporarypainting #abstractexpressionism #figurativeabstract #collector #artcollection #interiordecor #museumpiece - @juliakushnerartworld on Instagram

Every Wednesday for the month of July we will be highlighting the collection at Clark Atlanta University Art Museum with selections chosen by the museum staff. Today’s selection is Radcliffe Bailey’s, “Date of Arrival” (1998), Mixed-media assemblage. 1998.002. This selection was made by former Tina Dunkley Fellow TK Smith. @tksmith106 is a writer, arts critic, and curator who served as a 2018- 2020 Tina Dunkley Fellow. This Fall he will matriculate into the American Civilization Program at the University of Delaware. “Bailey’s “Date of Arrival” was one of the first works in CAUAM’s collection to challenge me. This mixed-media work is a large scale and difficult to ignore, even when fragmented. The work blends colorful abstract forms with engaging archival photographs. Whenever I was working in storage or researching the collection, “Date of Arrival” would confront me and demand I spend time making sense and finding meaning in its imagery.” #CAUAMfromHome #BlackArtists #MuseumfromHome #staffpicks #cauartmuseum #RadcliffeBailey - @cauartmuseum on Instagram

Looks like our Tornado Over Kansas has some attention at MidlandUSA Radio Corporation in Kansas City, the nation’s #1 manufacturer of NOAA Weather Radios. Their meteorologist/spokesperson Bruce Jones has a long standing interest in the painting, and shared that a print of the painting that was in his childhood home inspired him to become a meteorologist. A new Tornado Over Kansas poster is heading to Kansas City for the Midland Radio team! Thank you, Mr. Jones, for sharing these comments with us: The painting tells such a frightening story and yet the Mom and Dad ( certainly the latter) always gave me assurance that the kids and the pets would be okay. Curry also did a good job on the tornado and its surrounding clouds, at a time when the details of tornado formation were not well understood. His portrayal of the funnel cloud and its position in relation to the parent thunderstorm is right on. Even what’s now known as the “clear slot”, a slight erosion of nearby clouds caused by downdraft winds, is portrayed accurately. He must have studied several photos and astutely recreated a real twister. For all of its scientific integrity and the sheer terror, familial cohesiveness, and kinetic drama of the situation, it ranks as my favorite painting. “This should be a time of reckoning, of dialogue. These paintings meet the moment we are in today. The danger is not in looking at Philip Guston’s work, but in looking away.” - Musa Mayer on the cancellation of her father’s traveling retrospective @tate @mfaboston @mfahouston @nationalgallery. . Hooded Ku Klux Klan figures first appeared in Guston’s works in the early 1930s in portable murals that depicted the widespread violence against African Americans. Prompted in part by the violence and civil strife of the late 1960s, Guston returned to the subject in ‘City Limits’ (1969) and other paintings. “They are self-portraits,” he reflected. “I perceive myself as being behind the hood. . . . The idea of evil fascinated me. . . . I almost tried to imagine that I was living with the Klan. What would it be like to be evil?” The principal story told here is that of an America run afoul of its democratic promise. Guston refused to exempt himself from responsibility: in other paintings, he depicted an artist in Klan robes at his easel. . #philipguston - @nahmadcontemporary on Instagram

There have been many courageous and thoughtful critiques of the institutions decision to postpone (and effectively cancel) the Philip Guston retrospective spanning four major museums- most notably @markgodfrey1973 response on his instagram. So I will only say this - shutting this exhibition down disarms the potency of Gustons practice and the scholarship undertaken to contextualize it because as an artist who was critical of himself and our society through painting, we lose the physical experience of these ideas unfolding in space and time. The first reason why museums exist. These are not just digital images that get passed along on our phones - but physical objects that require care to install, a space to install them and a public to happen upon them. This is about the power of a series of brushstrokes made in 1969 on a canvas and how ones questioning of their surroundings with this medium is relevant, important, profound and deeply meaningful. That as an artist you are capable of asking these questions through your work. If these museums are unwilling to exhibit the artwork (their number one task!) that asks the hard questions (of us) and demands an even more focused approach to scholarship which these curators were clearly prepared to do, then they have not only insulted the public but have given up on the reason they exist: the artists and their work.
