To say this past weekend was a success would be an understatement... I am truly, truly blessed to have the support and love from the bboy scene here in Canada! What a way to finish of this surreal period back at work. Teaching is something I have always wanted to do but it has been something that has brought up a lot nerves as well. However, I can’t express how much joy and inspiration it has given me in lockdown/online and now back in the studio. Super grateful to @rachaelmossom @abronstage @accademiabuccellatorossi_ for giving me the experience of teaching here in Rome amongst some truly amazing artists. Also massive thank you to @tripdance_tripspace for giving me the opportunity to teach and research earlier this week. Feeling extremely grateful for these experiences to share and learn, especially in physical space with old friends and new ones. Sending love and gratitude to those who have joined me this week. QUARANTINEWHILE: With New York under essentially a shelter-in-place order for the foreseeable future, it seemed like a great time to consolidate footage from old projects, and share some old favorites with you guys. This is from one of my first post-college projects with our then almost brand new @freeflysystems MōVi M10, a crazy little dance short film choreographed by @mollymoll12 and @elove67. It was guerilla filmmaking at its finest, stealing shots on The Highline as well as a subway station. Here, leading lady @katherinemcmanus runs through the hero choreography on the waterfront in Dumbo, seamlessly inter-cutting to 3 other locations. So when @jacobjonasthecompany told me about his crazy idea of doing a drive-in dance performance in an empty Los Angeles parking lot at the height of COVID-19, I knew I had to be there to document it. Fast forward to bringing together an amazing crew, partnering with @daddelson as a co-directer, and assembling a fantastic post team for this socially distant shoot, and I couldnt be more proud! PARKED documents a one-night, drive-in dance performance in Los Angeles at the height of COVID-19. Im so grateful to the JJTC fam for letting us into their process and being so collaborative. On the morning of September 11, 2001, three days after my brother’s wedding at the old house on a stunning slice of New England peninsula, I was at the back surgeon at Yale deciding how to go forward. During storms the Long Island Sound smashed over onto the lawn and crumbled sections of sea wall. At the edge of the place, one pine tree bent over the water with time, more horizontal than vertical. It was a Japanese painting of New England. ––– As a kid, the tree was my spot when things got loud in the house. Under the crook I could see the flashing lights bouncing off the water but not exactly what was happening. ––– We all lost someone or knew someone who lost someone. ––– It’s September 11 again and my brother is getting divorced, his wife seems to have lost her mind and she’s trying to block him from his kid – the piece of life I’ve seen him do with absolute, pure love. I hope that kid has a tree. The house where they got married is sold. I miss that place. ––– New York is fighting for life again. The friend who took this photo just months ago is gone. R.I.P. @julianagianni . I went to the suburbs to keep my mom in check, and to have air. I had that privilege. Now I’m back, and we’re prepping the apartment to become a Zoom Yoga studio. ––– Last weekend, I went by the house in our little fishing boat, now stored at a friend’s dock. It’s a Boston Whaler – a totally unsexy, unsinkable New England classic. I didn’t pull close enough to make it obvious to anyone else, but I saw the tree, still holding on after all these years, like those two discs in my back. ––– NYC is one of the last villages in a country where mom and pop have been kicked out by Costco. - The lives of both Judson Box and Erik Troelsen were changed by the events of September 11th, 2001. A photograph brought them together. The pair met for the first time onstage at a Manhattan fundraiser for the National September 11th Memorial and Museum, when Judson fervently thanked the man who had brought his family a measure of peace. Erik had posted photographs on the museums online archive of 9/11 images, videos and stories. One showed a firefighter in full gear striding through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel ahead of his traffic-stalled fire truck shortly after the World Trade Centers Twin Towers came under attack. Having entered the tunnel before the first plane hit, Erik was unaware of the tragedy that was unfolding outside when he snapped the photograph. Suddenly, the girl in the car ahead of us got out crying, he said. Then we turned on the radio and heard what was going on. Soon after, fire trucks started racing through the tunnel, but a car that had broken down jammed traffic, he said. Some of the trucks got stuck, so the firefighters decided to walk instead, Erik recalled. Thats when I took the photograph. Scrolling through the archive, Judson came face to face with his son, Gary, a firefighter with Brooklyns Squad 1. Its the last known photo of Gary, then 35, who died less than an hour later when the towers came toppling down. Gary, who was among 12 members of Squad 1 to die at the World Trade Center, was a veteran of the citys fire department. Williamsburg Bridge Triptych. (Posting attempt 2) . I am beginning a period of full-time caretaking for a dear one, something I’ve never experienced before. I don’t think I’ve really danced this week. I’ve been spending time at the hospital and then afterwards talking into the night with friends, sitting outside under trees. I feel really supported by this city right now, which is a strange privilege. I found myself not ready to go home tonight, despite being out of my house for 11 hours: pharmacy-hospital-bike shop-park. . I’m thinking of how my Mom’s days were filled with the errands of caring for others. I understand it just a bit more now- the immediacy of it, how quickly time fills. And also I don’t want to lose my self in this new selflessness (if it is even that).
