Once upon a time, this woman came to #Kenya. Due to her gun-toting friends stealing so much land over their colonial years of horrific ‘rule’, this woman was immediately given acres upon acres upon acres (yes, for free) to develop and expand her coffee-making business. Throughout her limited time in Kenya she also hosted regular orgies and “wife-swapping” parties. They usually took place in her home, which still stands today. She also divorced her husband and fell in love with another man who passed away in a plane crash. Her ‘coffee-business’ pursuits didn’t do very well. But her parties did. After some time, during one of these parties, she contracted syphilis. She then flew back to Europe and died. There was no cure for such STDs back then. How do people not fear karma? Btw? The basic village of Kenyan land given to her by those thieving murderers, was soon named after her, in ‘memory’ of her. I wonder what it is, what contribution, what legacy, what moment in history are we supposed to honor here? Her little ‘memoir’ of African experience? Her celebrated facilitation of wife-swapping? Her failure to succeed despite access to entirely free land and, more or less, free labour? What is there to remember? What am I to respect? Oh and darlings... Guess what her name was? Guess what this area in #Nairobi is miraculously still called, today? #Karen. You can’t make this up. Just take a deep breath and imagine the complete insanity of this true story... Here’s where you’ll find Tony hand-crafting his award-winning Margherita pizza right from the very same stove he won with in Naples, Italy; the Cirigliano Wood Burning oven. My wife, my in-laws and I put our names in, for a table for four, and we were told it would be about a 20-30 minutes wait. Were seated in about 45 minutes. A long wait but it was worth it. A really nice atmosphere, great pizza, and lots of smiles around the room. Un giorno triste per Empoli, è scomparso il partigiano Rolando Fontanelli. Dal blog di Marco Mainardi su gonews.it: Era il 13 febbraio del 1945, da piazza del Popolo partirono 530 giovani per andare ad unirsi alle formazioni alleate impegnate sull’Appennino fra Emilia Romagna e Toscana. Fra questi c’era anche il ventunenne Rolando Fontanelli che proprio oggi, a 96 anni compiuti, ci ha lasciati. Era la memoria di quegli anni tragici ma allo stesso tempo bellissimi, una delle persone dalla cui viva voce si potevano ascoltare aneddoti e testimonianze di tempi che hanno segnato la storia d’Italia, portando a spazzare via un regime ed affermando i valori della democrazia dei quali godiamo ancora oggi. Il ‘magro’, così come fu subito soprannominato Rolando tra i partigiani per motivi facilmente immaginabili, questo fuoco ce l‘aveva dentro ed è bruciato per tutta la sua lunga vita. Una vita vissuta da partigiano perché, quando in gioventù ti trovi a vivere una simile esperienza, non può che restarti addosso per sempre, con lo stesso orgoglio, quel 13 febbraio del ’45 così come oggi. Lui la sua vita l’ha vissuta testimoniando, andando nelle scuole, scrivendo un libro, non mancando mai alle commemorazioni ufficiali e non negandosi mai a chi semplicemente gli chiedeva cosa furono quegli anni. Pur di raccontare si era adeguato anche al mondo nuovo, ai social nei quali era presente, alla tecnologia, tutto pur di dire a chi quei giorni non era nato cosa vuol dire vivere sotto un regime e quanto bella sia la democrazia. Rendere indietro quanto lui e quelli come lui ci hanno donato non è possibile, ma verso queste persone un dovere morale ce l’abbiamo tutti: dire a loro ed a chi contribuì alla lotta di liberazione eternamente grazie e difendere la memoria e quei valori dei quali godiamo oggi. Yesterday I said goodbye to my Jiddy Norm. Growing up I always saw him as the leader of our family. My Mum absolutely adored her Dad. Whenever he saw us grandkids his face would light up & he would say “ha! Hi Jiddy” - I’ll never forget his voice. Nothing brought him more joy than having his family with him. I remember when I told him I was opening my own business & he smiled so big & said “You know, business is in our blood. It’s in the Elias blood” then went on to tell me one his many stories of how he built his businesses in Australia. He was an incredible story teller, one of many things he was incredible at. Jiddy, I will miss your infectious smile, wise words & your speeches on Christmas Day. You lived an incredible 86 years & will NEVER be forgotten. Rest In Peace Jiddy. Alors que Jean-Louis, accompagné de son client, rentrait de la pyramide du Tacul par la trace principale de la traversée de la Vallée Blanche en direction d’Helbronner, la cordée a subi l’effondrement d’un pont de neige d’une ampleur exceptionnelle. Son client a retenu la chute et donné l’alerte, mais Jean-Louis profondément enseveli n’a pu être sauvé malgré l’intervention rapide et les gros moyens engagés par le PGHM . Jeune aspirant guide, Jean-Louis s’était impliqué dans la création du bureau des guides de Servoz. Membre de la Cie depuis 1989, il exerçait le métier de guide avec passion et discrétion fidélisant une grande clientèle. Sa polyvalence, sa pédagogie, son intérêt pour la prévention et l’évolution des techniques de sécurité l’ont naturellement amené ces dix dernières années à rejoindre l’équipe de guides formateurs de la Chamoniarde. Weve got some exciting news to share! We have recently been successful for an Esmee Fairbairn funded project to digitise, catalogue and share with you some never-before-seen photographs from Ealing Studios. ‘Shooting Stars: Behind the Scenes at Ealing Studios’ will look at the photographic collection of Stills Photographer Roy Gough. He photographed some of the biggest stars of the mid 20th century including Sir Roger Moore, Audrey Hepburn, Sir Alec Guinness and Sir Michael Redgrave and worked on well-known Ealing Studios films like The Captive Heart and Whisky Galore! Over the next few months we will be sharing some of these photographs online. This image is of Sir Michael Balcon and Sir Harry Secombe on the set of the comedy-drama “Davy”. Balcon ran Ealing Studios from 1938-1955 and is a legendary figure in the British Film Industry, producing some of Ealing Studios’ most well-known films such as Passport to Pimlico and The Lavender Hill Mob. This is my dad. A computer whiz, who’s entrepreneurial spirit lead him to start a successful computer business while instructing Navigators for C-130s in the Air Guard. He was smart, career driven, had an amazing laugh and loved his family the best he could. When I was 12 he was in a car accident that lead to a botched surgery, chronic pain, two failed suicide attempts and at 50 an accidental overdose from oxycontin (a drug that has ruined many lives and families). Today has been 13 years. His life was taken too soon, and this is the reminder I have to live mine to the fullest. So that’s what I’ll continue to do. ❤️ - @ellemajors on Instagram

Las cuales contienen gran cantidad de sustancias tóxicas que hacen que cada colilla pueda contaminar hasta 50L de agua 💧 . Ciao Egidio 😢 Dopo una lunga malattia si è spento nella notte tra lunedì e martedì Egidio Lotti, uno dei fondatori di San Patrignano. Al fianco di Vincenzo Muccioli sin dall’inizio, fu una figura di estrema dedizione e impegno negli anni in cui prendeva forma il metodo di recupero. . Senza riserve anche nei momenti difficili, fu saldo nella scelta di vita di dedicarsi all’impegno per il prossimo. Un impegno condiviso con la moglie Maria e il figlio Claudio, attualmente uno degli educatori del Centro minori femminile all’interno della Comunità. Per San Patrignano Egidio, originario di Cesena, rinunciò a una vita sicura e comoda per seguire come volontario Vincenzo nei primi anni Ottanta, conquistato dal grande progetto di solidarietà che divenne poi San Patrignano. Con lui furono gettate le basi dell’odierno Centro Medico, struttura sanitaria che si occupa della salute di tutti i giovani del centro di recupero. Nel tempo libero, si dedicava agli animali da cortile allevati in Comunità, che accudiva dimostrando un amore smisurato per la natura e per la vita. Hispanic Heritage Month Day 10 Oscar Zeta Acosta (April 8, 1935-) was a writer, lawyer, and political activist. He was born in El Paso, Texas and was raised in Californias San Joaquin Valley, near Modesto. Because Acostas father was drafted during World War II, Oscar held much responsibility in helping to take care of the family. As an attorney his activities began in Oakland but it was in East Los Angeles where he gained notoriety, prior to his mysterious disappearance in Mexico in the Spring of 1974. Acosta is most well known as the author of two of the most important novels of the Chicano Protest Movement, Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972), and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973). Both novels are highly acclaimed as major contributions to the Chicano literary renaissance. Who was John Turner? He was 17th Prime Minister from June 30 to September 17, 1984. He was also a long time politician and cabinet minister. Before he went on to become Prime Minister, served on AMS Council. He attended UBC in the late 1940s, was an athlete and a sportswriter for the Ubyssey, and then became the AMS Coordinator of Activities. Here you can see a picture of John Turner reminiscing about his days with the Ubyssey in 1988, and you can swipe to see a Student Council composite which he is featured in.
