@mtaartsdesign @queensmuseum and @tsqarts are excited to announce our collaboration on a new three-part public art initiative by artist #MierleLadermanUkeles, on view across digital displays throughout the MTA subway and rail system, on the large-scale digital billboard at 20 Times Square and on the facade of the Queens Museum facing Grand Central Parkway. . “For —– forever…” is both a response to the pandemic and a continuation of Ukeles’ long-standing dedication to honoring the unending labor of New York City’s public service workers through her artistic practice. The message is direct and personal, written in the artist’s hand. It is framed before and after with vibrant swelling colors from the language of protection from danger that signal: ‘the person wearing these colors is precious-take care!’ The artwork is viewable throughout a network of locations designed to reach New York City’s public service workers - from transit and sanitation workers to essential workers continuing their daily commute. “For —– forever…” aims to commemorate the efforts and undertakings of public service workers, specifically during the last few months. .
Since 1977, Ukeles has been the official, unsalaried artist-in-residence @nycsanitation and has created pieces that encompass the infinite maintenance work that keeps New York City functioning. One of her most notable projects is “Touch Sanitation” (1979-1980), in which she shook hands with all 8,500 employees of the New York Sanitation Department along their routes and places of work, saying to each worker, face to face: “Thank you for keeping NYC alive!”. “Now,” says Ukeles, “four decades later, in the midst of this horrific pandemic, my statement becomes newly relevant to the city’s infrastructure service workers, who are physically out there working every day to make sure our city remains a living entity.” .

Hi. It’s been a minute (or years). If you don’t know me, I’m Rachelle. I live by the ocean, in the foggy outer sunset in san francisco, making photos for work and for play. Today marks 7 weeks of my quarantine and shelter. Time speeds and slows in strange turns. Mostly, it’s been a blur. In one reality, I spend my days watching the light move around the walls of my apartment. Noticing the subtle shifts each day brings me a lot of comfort and pleasure. Two days ago, the sun moved just far enough north that the orange glow of sunset reaches my bedroom. Ive been looking forward to it all year long. In another reality, I’m 7 weeks into schooling/unschooling my 10 year old daughter Ava. 7 weeks of anxiety. 7 weeks of cancelled work and income loss. 7 weeks of separation from my partner. 7 weeks of waiting for US borders to open. 7 weeks of confronting my fears and insecurities. All of this has been hard and heavy. Even knowing how very privileged I am, it’s really fucking hard. It’s so easy to fear change and the unknown. Whats helping me most right now is an attempt to keep my heart open and energy flowing. Remembering that uncertainty has and always will be the only certainty in life, and that’s ok. And feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the incredible love that I give and receive everyday. Luckily, I never feel bored while isolated at home. I love being alone, could spend days in silence, and generally hate socializing. This part of the shelter feels strangely comforting. But still, my closest friendships are vital to me, and I need connection. So, lots of one-on-one talks, no zoom parties. I miss touch and physical closeness more than anything. Most days so far, I haven’t felt especially creative, which is disappointing, but I’m trying not to force it. Ive been doing (for literally the first time in my life) a lot of journaling, which has been a liberation. I’m talking to my mom more often. I’ve amazingly had mental capacity for three books. I’m practicing yoga and breathing every morning. Emphasis on breathing. If you’ve read this far, thanks for being here. I’ll be getting back to sharing my work and work-related updates soon. Dear friends, I hope youre all staying well, healthy, and safe thru this terrible time we are all facing. Lina and I are so so grateful for all of the love and support you all have shown. We truly appreciate all of the help that has been sent our way thru the last month and a half, but also these last two years since Melon opened! The love from you all is forever shining, and we thank you! To update you all, Lina and I have chosen to remain social distancing for a bit longer and listen to the scientists on staying home. Unfortunately, since Kemp has opened up all salons, this means Salon Lofts has started charging their weekly rent, whether you decide to open or not. The only option Salon Lofts offered to us was to defer payment that they would then add on top of our already pricey rent in a month or so. It just so happens our lease will be up July 1st, so we were in a bit of tough decision on what to do next. And frankly, thru this all, Salon Lofts has been a bit disappointing. Unfortunately, there would be no way we would be able to keep our Melon loft and not start taking clients immediately.  Therefore, sadly, Lina and I decided to pay out of our lease. Now I know a lot of you have been oh so generous with purchasing gift cards, and some who have even donated thru our personal venmo, which I am forever grateful for that!!...and honestly blown away! But since we are not sure on a return date (although we are hoping for July), and we are not sure on a location yet, this means we will not be rescheduling yet. If you for ANY reason need a refund on your gift card, there will be no questions asked! Please just email us and we will get that done as soon as possible, no awkward feelings!And if youd like to continue support, there is a link added to our bio where you can purchase hair products thru Hairstory and we will receive commission! Invigorating. Thats how I would describe Saturdays for me. So much so that against my better judgement of baby-ing my broken foot, I got up and cleaned, setup and shot some pix. I made a note to do it fast and careful, which is pretty much counter to each other, which resulted in lots of ugly pain face. But Saturdays are a constant thing that I do enjoy, which is evident when I scour through my old social media posts. Its the freedom of the weekend that gets me pumped. Harking back to waking up early Saturday morning to watch cartoons and play outside. I suppose not much has changed even in adult life.
