I checked into the hospital on Saturday evening of July 25th and 34.5hrs later Samantha May Albang was born! Thanks to my truly amazing midwifery and nursing team along with my hubby who supported me through the 9 months and made this all possible, Samantha May was born on July 27, 2020 at 9:14am. 7.3 pounds and 20 inches long, hard to believe it but Samantha is almost as tall as me. LOL jk. Emotions ran high in the delivery room but the moment Samantha May was born, the both of us were looking into her beautiful crying eyes while she was resting on my chest and a sense of calm came over us. It’s pretty amazing on how we made a human from scratch. Baking for 9 months and then birthing this incredible new life seriously brought a whole new meaning to our lives. Never in a million years did I think I would EVER be having a baby but I am so glad I did. A little over 12 hours ago, we welcomed River Warren Enloe this morning into the world at 8:01 AM! He measured 20” and weighed 8 pounds and 4 ounces. Little man did give us a bit of a scare this morning since he sucked a bit of fluid in on his exit. He was in the NICU for a couple of hours after birth to check on his lungs, but he came right back out since he was fine! Mom and River are both doing fine. We greatly appreciate all of the prayers going in this morning and throughout the day! Let me paint a picture for you this Friday morning. Some know the feeling - the distant, isolated, not connected, frustrated, alone, uncertain feeling all because of COVID...... Now, I want you all to take a moment to think about a mother. A mother who had a child in her belly or in her arms, or one that was playing with her 15 month old in the grass...THEN within the blink of eye, that mother is no longer carrying that child, playing with that child or fulfilling that purpose of being that Childs mom. Her HOPE during this time was ripped out. Isolation for grieving mothers has significant impacts. It does for those just struggling day-to-day, looking for normalcy during pandemic times, but grieving mothers suffer greatly. They have been stuck in homes, unable to get out and connect...see the world...distract their minds even with momentary normal things. Nothing is normal for mothers right now, but now amplify that for a grieving mother where the emotion of grief is new and the human body feels almost incapable of processing the pain. That is where we step in! The Finley Project was built for this. Since inception, we built our program for scalability and for use anywhere in the nation. We have built relationships with hospitals across the country and use a streamline online application process. We have developed online resources such as our private Facebook support page along with Support Volunteers who talk/text with their mothers weekly. We use counselors all over the country who have pivoted their practices to see our mothers Virtually. We have created Virtual monthly support groups and encouraged mothers to join Virtual Groups within their areas. We have provided Grocery Gift cards where jobs were lost and income was down. We have been ready for this. We are hearing it over and over from the mothers who have lost an infant during this PANDEMIC, that if they didnt have The FInley Project, they dont know where they would be. You all - THEY MEAN IT! This little fellow made my night...and perhaps my life...today. During our bedtime routine ever since he and his brother were born, I’ve always told them how proud I was to be their mom. Honestly what a week🌸 Our rainbow got shared by the gorgeous @fernemccann and @lydiabright and I’m blown away by all your lovely comments, messages and interest in our rainbows. Just got off a really amazing #1fitfuture call. I spent all of my 20s beating the crap out of myself and my body. And all for what? I was constantly tired and my body wasn’t changing. And I would just think I know what to do, I’m a personal trainer but why are my clients seeing results and I’m not??? The truth is the change had to come from within me. And it’s happening. It’s slow and it’s hard work but I want to look into this little girls eyes and show her what confidence looks like. Just remember you are never alone!! Laura shares:⁠ .⁠ Many express concern that sleep deprivation, physiological changes, time demands, and mom guilt will prevent them from being the runner they desire to be. They find, however, that they fit it in. They may not train with as big of mileage or demanding of workouts, but they train smarter (starting with building a multifaceted base) and consistently - and that is what yields results.⁠ .⁠ One new mother ran a 5K PR in a time trial before her baby turned one. When people ask me why I chose to go into health care, hundreds of reasons pop into my mind. But no other reason or example has served to be more valid, or more withstanding than to be like the amazing lady in this picture. That’s my mom. She is a pediatrician, and I would argue the best pediatrician out there. She became doctor in Pakistan and then moved to the US after my marrying my dad in 1980. After my father completed his exams and began a residency, my mother became determined to practice in the US as well. She had an infant daughter (me), two in laws who lived with her, and a husband who worked 24/7. Despite all those challenges she not only succeeded, she has thrived. She is my inspiration to be a better human being, a better mother to my children, a better practitioner to my patients. She has taught me that there is no challenge that hard work can not overcome. As a new mom, you know there is no such thing as being fully prepared. Sure, you read the books, you get all the things, you take the advice from your friends with kids... you try to get ready as best you can. But I don’t think there is ANYTHING that can prepare you for having your baby in the NICU. There’s no class about what to expect when your baby comes early, little advice from the ones you love because they just haven’t been through it, and honestly at that point, books are quite useless because finding the time to read them is seriously laughable. You just move through the motions, through the nightmare that is your reality, from your house to the hospital and back again as many times as it takes, repeating to your spouse, “I can’t believe this is happening.” You hope and you pray and you cry... a lot. And you lose hope and you barter with God and you sob some more. And for once that pesky mask comes in handy... a vessel to collect all your tears and a shield from the ugly cries. But also you smile bigger than you ever have in your whole entire life. And suddenly, your purpose on earth is clearer than ever. You’re truly, deeply happy to your core because your little one - issues and all - is perfect... and she’s yours. And the up and the down of the rollercoaster is somehow, weirdly worth every single unwanted ride. For us, it was 50 really hard days. 7 straight weeks. For some it’s shorter, sometimes easier, sometimes much longer, and much more bumpy. Every family and every warrior baby has their own journey and their own story. Introducing Skye Hendrix {6lbs 9oz - 18 in long} 🌞 he sure knows how to make an entrance. Here’s my #birthstory @ 11:30 pm Monday night I felt/heard a pop in bed, so I got up and my water broke I felt no pain or contractions all day then maybe 5 mins later I was having minute apart contractions, and I could barely walk around. I’m telling Brett we need to go now and I’m definitely getting an epidural 😂 so he gets dressed grabs our bags and we get in the car, around 11:50 were on our way to the hospital, took about 6 mins to get there (longest drive ever) finally we’re in the parking lot & I’m telling him there’s no way I can walk, I feel like I have to push so he runs and tells someone to get a wheel chair but when he gets back I told him there’s no way I can get out I feel his head comming, he runs and yells we need help she’s having a baby as he he’s doing that I push his little head out and yell for him to come, that I have his head you need to come get his body, sure enough I push one more time and out comes this sweet boy. Brett is there with his shirt off to grab the baby and at that moment 12:02 April 14th Skye was born 🤍 A few seconds later all the nurses are there and helping us, baby Skye is in my arms (last pic) I’m in shock of how quick and what just happened. they got me out of the car and on a bed to roll us into the hospital. It was the most surreal experience, I really wanted a natural birth but I didn’t expect for Brett and I to do it on our own, in the Jeep 😂 I could not have asked for a better experience, it felt so natural, quick and easy. It’s amazing what we are capable of, shoutout to all the women out there our bodies are amazing. Baby and I have been home since last night and are healthy and doing great. 🤍 Our world is better in the best way possible. Our little lady bébé decided to join us a couple of weeks early! Meet Margot Rose Dokken! We welcomed her into the world on 9/3/2020 at 2:03 AM. She weighed 6lbs 13oz, is 18.5” long, and she has her dad’s hair color 😭😍😵. Her tiny little self has both of our hearts in a big way - bigger than I could have ever imagined! As dad says, “Every little thing she does is magic!” I love her and her dad so much I can hardly think about it without melting into a puddle. Sloan has been a rockstar of a dad and husband (I would NOT have made it through a natural birth without him! 😭) I have so much to say, but it feels impossible to put into words right now. We are overjoyed, the best kind of tired, smitten, blissful, and truly honored to be her parents. I could not have asked for a better birth story. I’m beyond thankful for all of our amazing nurses and my doctor! My cup runneth over from gratitude. She was worth every single bit of my high risk autoimmune, COVID pandemic pregnancy worries and then some... Welcome to the world Oliver Cruz Ferrari 🤱🏼He’s a tiny little guy weighing in at 4lbs 9oz and measuring 17.5 inches. He’s a strong little dude and had great Apgar scores so a NICU stay hasn’t been needed despite being 3 weeks early! We will regardless be monitored over the next few days at the hospital! You are here...so it is well 🌿 On August 26, 2020, 3 weeks early, at 11:19AM we welcomed in Powell Jones McMullen weighing 7lbs 11oz and 20in. with a head full of blonde hair...our sweet Wells, as we call him. Named after his great grandfathers (Powell :: @tyler_mcmullen_ ‘s mother’s maiden name , Jones :: my mother’s maiden name). Great grandfather’s who all loved their families dearly, worked hard to provide for their families and the legacies they would leave, planned family vacations that would make for the best memories, infectious personalities that lit up even the darkest rooms, always ready to cut a rug on the dance floor, loved their leading ladies deeply while keeping flirtatious pranks alive...and took their last breath loving Jesus. This past Good Friday (April 10th), Tyler and I headed south as we had gotten word his dear Papa Bear had been diagnosed with cancer and only had a few days left. We made it to see him and were so excited to let him know that he had a great grandson on the way that would be carrying on the family name. As Papa Bear looked at the ultrasound, he raised his hands in the air and said with a big smile “he’ll do well!” Hence the name Wells. Papa Bear’s last conversation was with Tyler, the eldest grandson, as he charged him with the importance of family and cherishing the moments spent together ❤️🐻 Late that evening, Papa Bear went home to heaven to be with his Heavenly Father. Oh little Wells...you not only were chosen and put on this earth with true purpose, but you were loved deeply by so many long before you ever took your first breath! Newborn photos sneak peek 😍📸🥰 Taken yesterday at 2 weeks 1 day old. Hes already started to change so much. The past 2 weeks have changed life in so many ways. Ive left the house twice and day/night doesnt mean much around here. Knowing the last time he fed is the only standard of time. Its hard. Lack of sleep is a struggle for me. But a struggle that pales in comparison to the years of struggle waiting for my #miracleofscience. Just an update since it’s been a month of life with 2 kids. My oldest daughter has been amazing with the transition minus some expected toddler tantrums, perhaps even better than me. I find it really hard to balance spending time with my newborn and my toddler, and that fills me with a lot of mom guilt. I’m stuck on the couch nursing so many hours of the day and I still don’t feel comfortable leaving the house with two although I have been forcing myself to the last week or so. This post is intensely personal, but I feel it’s really important to share. This week has been #WorldBreastfeedingWeek. Most of the posts on social media are serene, idyllic photos of mamas nursing babies, but I want to show another side of breastfeeding: #exclusivepumping. I knew there would be a learning curve when it came to breastfeeding & nursing. Before C was born, I took a class, read articles/books etc. I figured nursing was like any skill where it might be hard to begin, but together baby & I would overcome challenges & eventually master it. Then, I had a baby w/ significant oral ties & severe GERD. We had her ties revised but they reattached multiple times (despite doing all the right things) & affected her ability to latch/effectively transfer milk when nursing. We worked w/ multiple doctors and practitioners on the reflux/GERD & C still spit up like a fountain, especially when nursing. I had to start pumping almost immediately after C was born in July 2019 & switched to basically exclusively pumping in Sep 2019. In the last 13 months, I’ve spent 1,186 hours hooked up to a pump. That’s almost 49.5 straight days pumping!! At the height, I pumped 7 or 8 times a day. I’m still pumping now, but winding down my journey. I’ve worked through low supply issues, supplemented w/ donor milk (forever grateful), trialed several formulas unsuccessfully, spent 8 months waking up in the middle of the night to pump, & grieved the unexpected twists of our feeding journey. I never would have survived pumping without the support of husband who picked up so so much slack while I was pumping. I’m so grateful for my mom making multiple extended trips to help us (before Covid hit 😢). I’m also so thankful for donor milk from @bekahlee33 and @kimberlyjarest & for pumping support/solidarity from fellow exclusive pumpers @kimberlyjarest (who is going to make the most AMAZING IBCLC) & @kelliellie. If I have any mama friends who find themselves exclusively pumping (whether intentionally or out of necessity) & need support, please let me know. There is SO much I wish I’d known when I began. Where was the support? Who was looking out for my best interest both physically and mentally? My doctor who I thought was on my team, didn’t believe me when I said something was wrong with my uterus. Chaulked it up to another pregnant woman wanting her body back. The nurse assigned to me as part of our provincial health care thought she could do her job by sending a form letter text. What if I was someone who was having real problems emotionally or mentally, I could’ve easily responded, I’m fine and she wouldn’t have known if it was the truth. The nurses and doctors at the hospital were useless they hardly checked on me and I administered my own medication and walked myself out. They didn’t make me feel comfortable or cared for and if it wasn’t for Mark stepping up at every turn they would’ve missed so much.⁠ ⁠ These examples of the nonexistent support postpartum is the reason I am here writing this blog and trying to show everyday mamas that postpartum is a journey you have to navigate and sometimes it might not be easy. You are not alone though, reach out to other mamas, ask questions, see if there is a postpartum support group in your neighborhood, try to find blogs talking about the postpartum period so when you feel helpless or are unsure if what you are going through is typical, you can read about it or talk to someone. Ⓑⓘⓡⓣⓗ Ⓢⓣⓞⓡⓨ Last Friday night, Aug 14th my waters started a slow leak. I wasnt even sure that was what it was until the next morning. We called and they told us to come in and get checked. I knew I wasnt having contractions yet, so we took our time getting ready and made our way. They verified the fluid was amniotic and admitted us. My cervix was .5 cm dilated and not effaced. It was going to be a long road ahead.. they started me on cytotec to be taken every 4 hours in attempts to thin the cervix and initiate active labor. I had taken a few doses and started to have contractions late Saturday night. I was up all night and by early Sunday I was exhausted from the pain and being unable to sleep through it. After having contractions for 12 hrs, I was almost 3 cm dilated, 50% effaced. My contractions were pretty consistently 5 minutes apart and would not get more frequent, however they were excruciating. I finally got the epidural before noon on Sunday and started on pitocin. The plan was for me to sleep a bit and let the induction do its thing.. I slept a little and then the nurse started coming in at different intervals to make me move positions in bed. The baby was having an unfavorable response to the pitocin and his heart rate was becoming erratic, but decelerating at times. There was some back and forth between the nurse who was recommending c-section and the midwife who thought changing positions more could help. The doctor came in and decided urgent c-section was our safest option for mama and baby and we were in the OR within 20 minutes. It was probably the scariest 20 minutes of my life. At 4:20 pm they were ready to begin and brought in my husband to hold my hand. Ethan Henry Roberts came into the world screaming at 4:39 on Sunday 8/16/20. It was not the experience we had planned, but our goal was a safe and healthy delivery and we got that. Baby is doing great and passing all his health checks. Crystal here — with a big announcement — Pearse Brian McCreery came early! He was born at home, in the tub, after three furious hours of labour, on Thursday Sept 10th @ 5:45 pm. Mom•School•Work • As if I wasn’t busy enough with just motherhood and work I throw school into the mix. • First I want to say that if you cannot commit, just wait. It took me 3 years to go back to school. It’s okay to wait. Second, you HAVE to commit. You have to WANT it. You have to make school a priority. This means saying No to people and things to get work done. This means spending your lunch breaks at work in front of another computer to do discussion boards and worksheets. Big couple of days for our family! Today is our 9th anniversary, which we’re celebrating in the hospital. Yesterday, on June 24th, we welcomed our daughter, Siobhan Marie Ptomey, into the world. SEPTEMBER is 💛🎗PEDIATRIC CANCER AWARENESS month. This month weighs heavy on my heart ❤️ because it reminds of when my son Joey was first diagnosed (with stage 4 cancer). The 2 year battle with: chemo, radiation, back to back tandem stem cell transplants, auto immune therapy, surgeries, and so soooo many transfusions, doesn’t weigh on my heart like the first few days of diagnosis. The battle was the fight, and I’m proud of that fight. We walked through the flames of hell and made it to the other side ❤️ and for that I am forever and ever grateful to @danafarber and @thejimmyfund But the reason I wanted to share these intimate pictures and call attention to #pediatriccancerawareness is to say to all the moms and dads out there getting a diagnosis in this time...I see you. You are so graceful in your acceptance and readiness to fight the fight ahead of you. I hold SO MUCH love and hope for you in my heart. To the moms and dads that have to make their kids wear masks and wipe down your groceries and disinfect everything and home school your other child for fear of bringing home germs (all inside this pandemic 💗) I know. I see you. You are strong. One day at a time... oh my god, one day at a time. You have this! My sweet baby boy has arrived and it turns out I had a real Rocket in my Pocket! On Aug 9 my water broke at 4am, at 5am I started to have contractions, I used my breathing app and at 6am we decided to drive to St Thomas Hospital. Arriving at 7.30am the contractions got really strong and I told them I was in labour at reception- they didn’t seem to believe me because I seemed very calm, they tested us for Covid and then they led me to leisurely to a birthing room thinking I’d have hours to go... but I was in there for only 10 more minutes when it switched to the final phases and he was born at 8.25am!! Weighing 7.2 lbs. I had no painkillers, nothing, not even time for gas and air! The entire labour was 25 minutes! I was in shock! I’d packed a giant birthing suitcase with candles and tens machine and lavender room spray and playlists and in the end we used one singular straw for me to drink water with. Nothing was even ready or set up in the room! The midwives said it was the fastest first baby birth they’d seen and nicknamed him Rocket 🚀. I guess the one upside to multiple retinal surgeries is that I now seem to have a good threshold and relationship with pain and can breathe through panic, feeling proud. Everyone on the ward was coming to say hi to little Rocket who gave a few screams and then was totally chilled. It was an awesome and amazing experience that I fully enjoyed and will never forget!! Although his nickname will always be Rocket, his real name is Mica Cordovan Greaves. Mica is pronounced My-kah. I love him sooooo much it’s insane. If you send me any messages please understand that I probably won’t answer right now. Its a huge adjustment taking care of a newborn, particularly as a single parent and so I’m in survival/adjusting mode right now getting used to caring for baby Rocket. Hopefully in a few weeks things will be less intense and I can answer some people. So happy he was born right on the river Thames with a beautiful view of Westminster- a true little Londoner.
