Lovely to receive and email coming into science week that this work is a finalist in the 2020 Waterhaouse Natural Science Art Prize - Ceramic artificial spawning habitat (ASH). It is fabulous to be able to showcase nationally this small piece of a large ongoing marine conservation project to support a critically endangered marine species. . The Spotted Handfish (Brachionichthys hirsutus) is listed on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List and the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Act and only exists in a number of sites in the Derwent River, Tasmania. I created 3000 ceramic ASH in 2018 for CSIRO’s Spotted Handfish Program. This ceramic ASH was scuba dived into spotted handfish sites resulting in site specific marine ceramic artificial spawning habitat installations in the Derwent River. These ASH replace depleted valuable spawning habitat previously provided by stalked ascidians (Sycosa pulchra). In September 2018 the first wild spawning occurred around ceramic ASH. In 2019 this design was modified after consultation with Dr Assaad Taoum and subsequent stress testing @utasengineering and I created a further 2500 ASH for deployment to successfully support spawning. The aim of this project is to further secure from extinction the Spotted Handfish. The CSIRO project is headed by Dr Tim Lynch, Senior Research Scientist and key stakeholders include NESP, DPIPWE, UTAS, @seahorseworld , Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, Zoos and Aquarium Association and MAST. Acknowledgement goes to all who have supported and contributed to this project over many years including the awesome work of @silverfishcollections @tim.lynch011 and divers @underwater_perspectives @carliedevine @leah.soo and thanks to @utascentreforthearts for my two art/science residencies to make this work. This work holds a story of how where biodiversity is impacted, extinctions are made possible, but also the story of a community’s commitment to care for a species other than our own.
