FLORIDA #gotravelandsea with @janelle_vanruiten I am completely against the history of thanksgiving and the massacre of native americans that occurred but I do believe its important to take time to reminisce on what I am thankful/grateful for. Today Im reflecting on my life in the past year to now. Remembering why I am thankful and what has brought me here. The challenges and mentally hard times. 10 months ago I broke my elbow, spent 2 months on disability, only to be offered the opportunity of a lifetime and made the best decision of our lives to be where we are right here in Florida with sharks. Tanner and I spent many nights drinking tea manifesting our future to exactly where we are now. Crazy as some may think I absolutely believe this journey is from our inability to believe we would stay where we were working the jobs we had. Just the time we took to remember we were grateful for what we had for the friends and family we had and where we wanted to be lead us to where we are now. So remember to take time to stay grateful and thankful for life’s journey wherever you may be in that journey the universe will make your wildest dreams come true if you believe and work hard ✨ . I am so incredibly lucky to capture and share moments like this. Two critically-endangered oceanic white tips, dancing in the shallows right in front of me. But I can never bottle the emotion of it. I can’t capture that part and I can never make you feel it the way that I feel it. It’s like drinking from firehose. You can’t even imagine the beauty and balance of 300 million years of evolutionary perfection. It’s intoxicating. But the after-taste is sour. Because you know without a fundamental focus and global revolution towards the health and abundance of our oceans, we are going to loose it. All of it. 300 million years of balance, gone, in only a few hundred years. Not on our watch? It’s happening on our watch! We can never let up. Never give up hope. We can fight. We can VOTE. It’s time to celebrate, Florida is officially the 15th state to ban the shark fin trade! The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. When we put our collective power behind an effort, we can do the (nearly) impossible.⠀ ⠀ We cannot thank our Allies enough, you spoke up for sharks every single time we said go! Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan. The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised. The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. Reaching over 35 million viewers every year, all of this attention comes with both good and bad and the consequences of shark week have become more controversial in the eyes of conservationists. . In a world where over 100 million sharks are killed each year and populations are rapidly declining it is more important than ever that we quickly shift from the unrealistic monsters we make them out to be to a more accurate depiction of the animals that are the backbone of marine ecosystems. . They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. A 360 camera records this tiger sharks movements like never before. Deployed last month during a film shoot for @sharkweek, everything here is custom assembled, meaning many hours were spent each night testing out the ballast and flotation of the bio-logger package before we put it out in this female tiger shark. The entire package comes off the shark after 1 day, leaving nothing - the only kicker: we need to go find the tag. It’s always an adventure - this tag popped 10 miles away in the deep. Fin cams are an incredible way to see how sharks use their environments, but being able to see behind, above, and below the shark is a game changer. Heard that there were a couple of Grey Nurse sharks hanging round the bay so had to jump in and have a look around. Every single time that theyve been around they always manage to elude me, except for this time. Jumped in the water swam out about 50 metres and stumbled across a juvenile straight away. As of yesterday Florida became the 15th state in America to ban the import and export of Shark fins!! The new law prohibits the import, export and sale of shark fins in Florida. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor, and face a fine of up to $9,500 for repeat violations and license suspension or revocation. Shark fins are used to make soup which is popular in China. The shark fin prohibition in Florida takes effect on October 1. We’d like to take this opportunity to call out Australia on its outdated shark net laws.
