It happened to me too. . . When I recovered from B.E.D I lost three friendships that were important to me at that time. . . While they didn’t explicitly tell me that they didn’t support my recovery, their actions made it quite clear. . . They were not in support of my adopting healthier behaviours around food. . . They were not supportive of the fact that I was able to pursue new opportunities as a result of recovery, one of which included dating after not being able to do so for quite some time, which I now understand may have been largely in part due to my eating disorder. . . They were not supportive of the goals I had towards a better life for myself. . . I’ve probably made these three girls sound totally evil. I wouldn’t say that they are. But I WOULD definitely say that I played a role in this group that recovery would cause me to no longer fulfil. . . That role was the girl who was always free on a Saturday night because she was dateless. The girl who didn’t have much fashion sense because she wore baggy clothing to hide herself. The girl who was always down to eat in large quantities with you ( and eating large meals is great and can be fun but in my case it was part of ongoing binges), but was actually losing herself in the food and not managing her real emotions. . . So I made the choice years ago to walk away. . . At first, it was hard. Really hard. I questioned my decision constantly even though others affirmed I was right. But when I look at my life years later recovered I know I’m so much happier. I have friends that truly care about me and know how much I care about them. I’m able to exercise for joy and health and not to shrink. I am able to enjoy meals with others where I feel present and not using food to numb. . . I’m telling you this so you know that if you need to or needed to walk away from certain people to maintain your recovery, that this is not only okay, but normal. . . Children are human, they have emotions, they hurt and they feel pain, they are not for anyone to treat like a property. Many people are in therapy because their parents raised them this way, they shouted at them instead of communicating with love which silenced their voice, they beat them instead of finding alternative ways to show them that a actions have consequences which has them living in fear and anxious around making mistakes or failing, they embarrassed them to teach them a lesson which makes them tolerate abuse and humiliation later in life from people in their lives, they asked them things like where is the other 1 percent when they did their best instead of affirming and celebrating them and helping them do better which makes them seek external validation and struggle to celebrate themselves. I could go on and on about how parenting like how most of our parents did affects us later on in life, if we are to create a less violent generation as Africans (and other nationalities), that is thriving holistically we have to unlearn some of the things that our parents taught us through and how they raised us if it is not serving us fully. We have to remember how it made us feel and want better for our kids, our parents didnt have the resources but we do and we can do better. Conscious parenting is not easy, it requires more intentionality, patience, learning and unlearning but it is worth it.
