Our History: The concept of founding the Committee of 100 came from the renowned architect, the late I.M. Pei and Dr. Henry Kissinger, 56th U.S. Secretary of State in 1988. Kissinger discussed with Pei the notion of organizing an influential group of Chinese Americans to address issues of international concern between the United States and China. Later in June of 1989, I.M. Pei became inundated with calls from reporters seeking his reaction as an influential Chinese American to the Tiananmen events. Pei felt that no single individual could adequately represent the Chinese American perspective. With a sense of urgency to build bridges between China and the United States, Pei teamed with master cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Henry S. #tbt In 1990 I wrote the song #leavethegunsathome with @greg_phillinganes_live which we then recorded with Al Green @royalstudiosmemphis in Memphis. Willie Mitchel was there and helped keep the 24 track rolling when it seemed to be lagging. ( that’s a whole other story). But when we released the track in 1991 Al and I got the opportunity to meet up with James Brady, Reagan’s press press secretary who had been paralyzed in the Reagan’s assassination attempt and later started an organization that wrote and helped pass the Brady Bill. We met with him in Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church after having breakfast @sylviassoulfoodbrand - can you imagine having breakfast there with Al Green?? Line out the door. Just wanted to big up @bradybuzz who continue the work of James Brady to this day. Hopefully I’ll have some new info re the song soon. - @arthurhbaker on Instagram

White GA- late 80s on my Grandparents farm.. that’s my Grandpa, my best pal Eric, and me on the left. I remember these days vividly.. I remember exactly where the 40 foot long water moccasin slept in that pond. I remember helping my grandpa shoot the snapping turtles with a sawed off shot gun, I remember all my grandmothers tiny glass pianos and duck crap absolutely everywhere. There was a wall of white rabbits with red eyes in the barn, a peacock named Prince who decided to live at the house down the street, a pet turkey that attacked me from behind, and the smallest toads in the world. I’d share a bed with my Great Grandma who was known for grave robbing with her sister in a small town in NC, I’d fall asleep every night to the voice of Barbara Walters. I’d crack nuts with a huge weird nut cracker and watch them burn in the fire. I knew every word to every Dolly song. My uncles would sing “sometimes it’s hard to be a woman” in perfect harmony for no reason whatsoever.. my grandmother took people on haunted hay rides and my uncles would hide in the woods dressed as bears to scare them. I know where the headless witch lived. I still do. All my Aunts friends names started with Ts. Tanya, Terry, Tammy, Tina, and so forth and so on. My maw maw was a full blooded Cherokee Native American and the only family member trusted with the cleaning of the catfish. My whole family loved “Dallas”, the Gaithers and A song called “It’s me again Margaret”. My grandmother secretly fed the starving horses every night on her neighbors property. My grandpa had a long black Cadillac with red leather interior and an old Dodge Ram with a column shift. I’ve got a new record coming out next year.. probably January or February. These are my parents. Both immigrants from entirely different cultures. Growing up was different and I felt different. I honestly wished I was white many times in my life so I could feel more a part of the group. Growing up was hard. We had very little. But what drives me today is that there were people around me that made sure we were ok and made sure we were welcome and had what we needed. I legitimately think of them often. I am grateful for them. Were we at times profiled? Yes. Were we asked to go “back to our country”? Yes. But there were people in my life that lifted us up and helped us feel like we mattered. These people knew that we needed more. The reality is that there are inequalities in our world. These inequalities are not because of some inherently inferior characteristics that some people have. Instead, we must remember that unfortunately inequality is a result of hundreds of years of maltreatment, unfairness and oppression. These inequalities were created and are maintained by systems and institutions to benefit some people while keeping other people down. If you can’t see this, I humbly ask you to read on the subject of slavery, the Civil Rights Movement and it’s effects on our society, immigrants and people of color in general. We are now in a way forced to address inequality, and we must remember that equality is the goal, not the method. An equality approach may look just and fair, but it cannot lead to equality. An equality approach on an unequal world will only maintain inequality. Instead, we need to use an EQUITY approach to drive our actions. Help others that might need an extra hand, help others that might not have the same opportunities that we do. It’s a constant focus on those who are sick, hungry, oppressed, exiled, and mistreated. Ultimately they need an extra hand so that we can all truly be “equal”. I know this for a fact and from personal experience. Let’s listen and learn. Some need more 🙏🏽 - @rajivpatel on Instagram
