A bit unusual post for my feed - a simple glass of simple Veuve Clicquot Brut. Not from the 80s, not some special cuvée, not a wine glass test, nothing. Not typical, huh? Well, once in a while it’s, actually, interesting to go back and to re-taste the champagnes that received a solid 5* several years ago when I was just a beginner. Most of us started our path from the big houses and in some way life was so much easier back then :) And, frankly speaking, VC is not bad at all. It has enough acidity, no pronounced yeasty aroma (unlike his another big competitor that starts with letter “M” and). Ok, sugar (10 g/l dosage) is there, but not really annoying. VC uses about 55% of pinot which shifts this cuvée to more vinous part of the big house styles. Reserve wines 35% with age spread 2-30 years (ok, probably, not so much 30yr old wine there, let’s be realistic), which, again, makes it totally different from “her brother” using only 2-3yr old reserve wines to keep the style constant. Is it terrible? Not really. Decent classic brut of a big house and you may actually enjoy a glass of it. But knowing so many little growers now I can find a bottle of similar quality in Champagne for almost a half of the price, especially, if you try to look at the Pinot part of the region like Bouzy or Ambonnay. Ah, nostalgia. Clos du Mesnil tasting last night did not disappoint. Served single blind. 85/88/95/96 were all delicious. Sadly the 1990 was corked. 85 speaks more quietly than the others but is a very complete wine and a joy to drink. The 1988 has mature note on the nose, but buckets of acid and structure on the palate. Serious drive. 95 is a touch austere, compared to the others. Lots of structure without a ton of meat on the bones. Great definition. Probably my personal favorite. The 96 will be a legend. It is a freight train of tropical fruit, orchard fruit, and acid. Gives the palate whiplash at this point. The regular 1985 fruit showed very similarly to the clos du Mesnil. Just softer on the acid. - @golden8wines on Instagram

Krug Grande Cuvee 162eme Edition. Base vintage is 2006. Oldest reserve wine is from 1990 and received a cork in spring of 2014. Absolutely lovely. Rich and concentrated with a perfect balance of oxidative undertone and toasty brioche. While the fruits remain fresh and strong, secondary nuances are more prominent than ever before, making this edition even more complex and complete. This is so good.
