🎵 cause in a sky full of stars I think I saw you... 🎵 Many colorful stars are packed close together in this image of the globular cluster NGC 1805, taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. This tight grouping of thousands of stars is located near the edge of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way. The stars orbit closely to one another, like bees swarming around a hive. In the dense center of one of these clusters, stars are 100 to 1,000 times closer together than the nearest stars are to our Sun, making planetary systems around them unlikely. The striking difference in star colors is illustrated beautifully in this image, which combines different types of light: blue stars, shining brightest in near-ultraviolet light, and red stars, illuminated in red and near-infrared. Space telescopes like Hubble can observe in the ultraviolet because they are positioned above Earth’s atmosphere, which absorbs most ultraviolet light, making it inaccessible to ground-based facilities. This young globular cluster can be seen from the Southern Hemisphere, in the Dorado constellation, which is Portuguese for dolphinfish. Usually, globular clusters contain stars that are born at the same time. NGC 1805, however, is unusual as it appears to host two different populations of stars with ages millions of years apart. Observing such clusters of stars can help astronomers understand how stars evolve, and what factors determine whether they end their lives as white dwarfs or explode as supernovae. The Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) - A bright emission nebula about 7100 lys from Cassiopeia. This nebula is the result of a massive star nearly 45 times that of our Sun. The intense stellar winds heat up and push the molecular cloud out to an area of more dense material and cause the shell and surround Hydrogen gases to glow. My 4th attempt at capturing the Andromeda Galaxy and my best thus far. Still a long way to go, but progress is progress 😀 • This is a stack of about 15 images taken this past weekend when I got together with @mostly_star_stuff and @izdana at Mt. Pinos. Dana & her husband Matt arrived the day before and subsequently got pummeled with rain and hale during a storm that rolled through Saturday late afternoon. Justin and I were lucky enough to only have to drive through it! The storm cleared but at least some clouds remained throughout most of the night so I was not able to capture more frames. Next time... • From Wikipedia: “The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224 and originally the Andromeda Nebula, is a barred spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years (770 kiloparsecs) from Earth and the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way. The galaxys name stems from the area of Earths sky in which it appears, the constellation of Andromeda, which itself is named after the Ethiopian (or Phoenician) princess who was the wife of Perseus in Greek mythology. • The Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies are expected to collide in around 4.5 billion years, merging to form a giant elliptical galaxy or a large lenticular galaxy. With an apparent magnitude of 3.4, the Andromeda Galaxy is among the brightest of the Messier objects, making it visible to the naked eye from Earth on moonless nights, even when viewed from areas with moderate light pollution.. . . . @nikonusaD850, ISO 6400, AstroTech ED102 4” f/7 APO refractor, @celestronuniverse Advance VX mount. NGC 3572 and the Southern Tadpoles This cosmic skyscape features glowing gas and dark dust clouds along side the young stars of NGC 3572. A beautiful emission nebula and star cluster in far southern skies, the region is often overlooked by astroimagers in favor of its brighter neighbor, the nearby Carina Nebula. Stars from NGC 3572 are toward the upper left in the telescopic frame that would measure about 100 light-years across at the clusters estimated distant of 9,000 light-years. The visible interstellar gas and dust is part of the star clusters natal molecular cloud. Dense streamers of material within the nebula, eroded by stellar winds and radiation, clearly trail away from the energetic young stars. They are likely sites of ongoing star formation with shapes reminiscent of the cosmic Tadpoles of IC 410 better known to northern skygazers. In the coming tens to hundreds of millions of years, gas and stars in the cluster will be dispersed though, by gravitational tides and by violent supernova explosions that end the short lives of the massive cluster stars. ...That time I had the privilege of virtually meeting and partnering with 12 year old William @saint_rossi25 to help him get his first image ever. William is a sharp kid and he’s completely fascinated by Space. He found my Instagram profile and apparently it became a regular topic of dinner conversations with his mom. So I reached out and asked for permission to log in with him to @optcorp ‘s largest remote observatory telescope. He would control the telescope from 3000 miles away. I told him I would train him how, but the only rules were that he would have to take full control and make every creative decision as well as every single click of the mouse. Basically, he would have to learn to be an astrophotographer. A few nights later, I watched in awe as this image unfolded. This was months ago, and I still look at this image all the time, reminded of what a kid can do when given a chance to channel their passion, excitement and creativity. Congratulations @saint_rossi25 on creating what is now the single best image on the Instagram feed you like to scroll through. - @gibsonpics on Instagram

Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus) 🕷️ Located approximately 160,000 light-years away, 30 Doradus, or more commonly known as the Tarantula Nebula, is a region of interstellar atomic ionized hydrogen (HII region) in the Large Magellanic Cloud 🌀, an orbiting satellite galaxy of the Milky Way 🌌. At the centre of the Tarantula Nebula is the star cluster NGC 2070, which includes the star concentration R136 🌟. R136, an approximate 450,000 solar mass cluster, produces most of the energy that makes the nebula visible. The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orions Belt in the constellation of Orion. - It is one of the brightest nebula and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across and has a mass of about 2,000 times that of the Sun. - The Orion Nebula is among the most intensely studied celestial features as the nebula has revealed much about the process of how stars and planetary systems are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust. Like a good neighbor 🎶 Follow @gorilla_astro for more ground based Astrophotography. The andromeda Galaxy is our closest neighboring Galaxy in our local group within the Virgo cluster. Its roughly 2.5 million light years away from us and spans a diameter of around 220k light years. This neighbor also will be crashing into us in an estimated 4.5 billion years. Of course by then our sun wouldve expanded and turned into a White dwarf and who knows where us humans will be or have evolved into by then. Speaking of that when looking into the past, this is the light we are seeing from 2.5 million years ago and us humans were not around back then, but moreso a distant ancestor known as Homo Habilis was running around the primitive world unaware of what was out there in the sky. . 🔵 Up and Over • ⁦▶️⁩ Every now and then, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope glimpses a common object — say, a spiral galaxy — in an interesting or unusual way. A sharply angled perspective, such as the one shown in this Picture of the Week, can make it seem as if we, the viewers, are craning our necks to see over a barrier into the galaxys bright centre. . ⁦▶️⁩ In the case of NGC 3169, this barrier is the thick dust embedded within the galaxys spiral arms. Cosmic dust comprises a potpourri of particles, including water ice, hydrocarbons, silicates, and other solid material. It has many origins and sources, from the leftovers of star and planet formation to molecules modified over millions of years by interactions with starlight. . ⁦▶️⁩ NGC 3169 is located about 70 million light-years away in the constellation of Sextans. It is part of the Leo I Group of galaxies, which, like the Local Group that houses our home galaxy, the Milky Way, is part of a larger galactic congregation known as the Virgo Supercluster. ••• Credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, L. M51 The Whirlpool Galaxy - This is a popular galaxy for astronomers and imagers to target through medium-high focal length telescopes. M51 faces the earth head on, almost like its looking at us. This magnificent galaxy has very well defined spirals. Such galaxies are often called grand-design galaxies. The spirals are riddled with dark lanes of dust and red regions of starburst (or nebulae). These spirals can be traced all the way from the outermost regions into the galactic core where they converge. Theres also something very special about this target. Looking at the bottom might make you question what the club shaped structure at the end of the spiral is. This is in fact a dwarf galaxy named M51b or NGC 5195. The dwarf galaxy actually lies slightly behind M51 and is connected to its spiral by something known as a tidal-bridge. This bridge is responsible for sucking in material from the dwarf into M51. This not only distorts the true shape of NGC5195, but also that of M51 [picture 2]. [Picture 3] Youll see two tiny smudges named IC 4277 and IC 4278. These two are extremely distant galaxies. Redshift measurements put IC 4278 at 230 Million light years away from Earth. IC 4277 is a galaxy seen on its edge and is so distant and close to M51 that the gravity of M51 distorts measurements made to IC 4277. Thus, an accurate measurement has not been possible but is thought to be 650 Million light years away. When this light left the galaxy, the earliest plants as we know them today were just starting form and no lifeforms we term animals yet existed. I call this one “The Veil - Gas Mark 7” I don’t like to take myself too seriously. To me astrophotography and astronomy are a wonderful hobby and scientific discipline that have bought me such enjoyment and wonderful opportunities. On the odd occasion, I get not so nice people messaging me or commenting nasty remarks about me, my images, anything really. Most of the time I just block and delete, but other times it can ruin my whole day. What I wanted to say was I just wish people would think about what they are writing when they are online hidden behind a computer or phone screen 😞 people have literally no idea how the other person who’s on the receiving end of that comment may take it or how much damage it may do to them. So try and #BeKind always. At the end of the day I just want to help and inspire people to look up and enjoy space. Which brings me back to this image...I had a bit of fun overcooking it for Instagram. To make it a bit bold and beautiful and to make me, and hopefully some of you smile :) #astronomy #astrophotography #publicserviceannouncement #veilnebula #nebula #spacepic #deepspace #spacephotography #amateurastronomy #amateurastrophotography #kindness #stars #milkyway #galaxy - @astrostace on Instagram

- Milky way over western Australia [2048x894]

Messier 20 and 21 The beautiful Trifid Nebula, also known as Messier 20, is easy to find with a small telescope in the nebula rich constellation Sagittarius. About 5,000 light-years away, the colorful study in cosmic contrasts shares this well-composed, nearly 1 degree wide field with open star cluster Messier 21 (right). Trisected by dust lanes the Trifid itself is about 40 light-years across and a mere 300,000 years old. That makes it one of the youngest star forming regions in our sky, with newborn and embryonic stars embedded in its natal dust and gas clouds. Estimates of the distance to open star cluster M21 are similar to M20s, but though they share this gorgeous telescopic skyscape there is no apparent connection between the two. In fact, M21s stars are much older, about 8 million years old. - @astronomyjourney on Instagram

- The Seagull and Thor’s Helmet nebulas. February 5, 2019

Saddled to Orion’s right hip is a pair of beautiful emission nebulae which we call the Flame and Horsehead. Both nebulae, which are about 1,300-1,500 l.y. from here, glow from the radiation given off by surrounding stars. The Flame nebula in particular glows due to the relentless ultraviolet energy produced by Alnitak, the bright blue star (actually a triple star system) near image center and the furthest left of Orion’s 3 belt stars as seen in the Northern hemisphere. Within this nebula are also filaments of heavier dust which form patterns of dark lines. Next door is the Horsehead Nebula – while the main attraction here is a horsey-shaped dark nebula obscuring detail behind it, the larger red backdrop (IC 434) glows due to the radiation produced by the star system Sigma Orionis (the bright “star” in the upper right). The magnetic force from these stars also impels the Hydrogen to form thin but noticeable streams, making it look almost like a tidal wave of water. Both areas are busy forming new stars and solar systems – much like their neighboring Orion Nebula which is out of view to the right (or Celestial South). As always, the big version can be seen on Astronewton.com, just check my bio for the link. I also included a 🔥high contrast💯 edit at the end to make the dank detail easier to see. . . . These objects cover a larger area of sky than you may think, too. The first image of this series is probably about 4-5 “Full Moons” across. Background nebulosity also extends much further than just these two main nebulae as well, as this pair is only one small part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. While I did not have nearly enough skies to capture all the nebula I wanted, I did manage to catch a mosaic of this area. This image is only the left-most panel of a 60-hour, 3-panel mosaic captured across 18 nights from Dec 2019 through March 2020. The Andromeda Galaxy . . First shot at this superstar of a galactic object for me. Its one for the northern hemisphere really as it doesnt really rise much above the horizon for me in and around Sydney. . Had about a half hours window to capture this 2 nights ago. There was a fair bit of light pollution just on the horizon as it was rising and I captured it when it was about a fists height at arms length above the horizon.. so not much at all! . . It gets a little higher, maybe double that but clouds rolled in so that was that. . . Shot with the modified Sony A7s, Samyand 135 f/2, iso 1250, 50s on the Skywatcher Sky Adventurer mount. In dark skies the lagoon nebula is actually visible to the naked eye and along w/ its buddy the trifid can be seen with binoculars and short focal length Telescopes. Ill be honest Im no fan of summer here in Texas. It gets hot, it gets humid and the bugs are sure annoying. In fact the only things about summer here I like would be swimming and Astrophotography. With the milky way rising it gives light to beginners and adept alike to observe and photograph the night sky from the shortest to most narrow of focal lengths. Ill have to say the triad ultra from #optcorp is a superb filter and well worth every penny, and processing data from it and a color camera is sooooo much fun and opens up the imagination. #qhyccd really made a nice camera too and am very satisfied with the results after I got everything dialed in. Id say Im quite happy about this first light and look forward to many more images with this setup This setup was working side by side with my other one I used for the close up version of the trifid nebula recently posted in my gallery, so if you want to see the trifid a little bit closer to take a look at that and the equipment I used on the same nights beside this Data: 68x2min lights 64 darks 30 flats 200 bias Shot at unity gain Temperature -5 Equipment: Qhy294c, zwo asi120mm mini, William optics spacecat (250mm focal length), celestron avx, qhy polemaster, Pegasus dew heater system Calibrated and processed in pixinsight Thank you for looking and always keep your head up to the stars #space #stargazing #starchild #triadfilter #astro_taner #skyandtelescope - @gorilla_astro on Instagram

After watching this video on searching for and processing Hubble Space Telescope images the other day I was inspired to try this out. After having a potentially clear night clouded out last night, I decided to give it a whirl. I searched out data on M51 and was pleasantly surprised at the data I found. I ran this through my usual processing workflow in Pixinsight in addition to blending the two red channels and doing a channel combination to get a RGB color image to work with. The image scale on this data is 0.05 arcsec per pixel and I used the high resolution files (~420MB per mono channel). This is just about 2 hrs of integration time across the 4 channels used to make up this image. If you want to give this a try the shortcut to the data I used is here (https://archive.stsci.edu/prepds/m51/datalist.html). You can find more info on how to find the data and process by watching the following video by Cuiv the Lazy Geek. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgklkUPwPNA&pp=wgIECgIIAQ%3D%3D&feature=push-sd&attr_tag=stzWpn8wKsp-dNBS%3A6 - @dainjason on Instagram

Chapter 16 : M27, 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗨𝗠𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗡𝗘𝗕𝗨𝗟𝗔 ! Discovered in 1764 by Charles Messier, the Dumbbell Nebula is a planetary nebula which located in the constellation Vulpecula. It was also the first ever planetary nebula to be observed in the history of astronomy. The particular shape which is compared to to that of a dumbbell has earned this nebula the name that we know nowaday. At its brightness of visual magnitude 7.5, which makes it easily be seen in binoculars, even smaller telescopes can observe some of its details. Thats why M27 is a popular object among amateur astronomers. The nebula, at the end of its life, has shed its outer layers in a glowing display of color. The hot central star, consists of gas that has been ejected. They are heated by the intense ultraviolet radiation from this star and emit strongly at specific wavelengths. Consequently, these wavelengths then correspond to different atoms existing within the nebula, thus to the different colors that we can see. A Giant Squid in the Flying Bat🦑Comment what you see🔭 ⠀ ⠀ Very faint but also very large on planet Earths sky, a giant Squid Nebula cataloged as Ou4, and Sh2-129 also known as the Flying Bat Nebula, are both caught in this cosmic scene toward the royal constellation Cepheus. Composed with almost 17 hours of narrowband image data, the telescopic field of view is 4 degrees or 8 Full Moons across. Discovered in 2011 by French astro-imager Nicolas Outters, the Squid Nebulas alluring bipolar shape is distinguished here by the telltale blue-green emission from doubly ionized oxygen atoms. Though apparently completely surrounded by the reddish hydrogen emission region Sh2-129, the true distance and nature of the Squid Nebula have been difficult to determine. Still, a recent investigation suggests Ou4 really does lie within Sh2-129 some 2,300 light-years away. Consistent with that scenario, Ou4 would represent a spectacular outflow driven by HR8119, a triple system of hot, massive stars seen near the center of the nebula. The truly giant Squid Nebula would physically be nearly 50 light-years across. ⠀ Are you ready to discover the wonders of the universe🔭 Follow @needspacemedia ⠀ Credit: Rolf Geissinger ⠀ ⠀ #universe #astronomy #nebula #nebulae #nebulas #orionnebula #orion #nebulosa #nasa #spacetime #spacetravel #deepspace #stargazing #deepsky #natgeospace #astrography #astrophoto #spaceexploration #astro_photography_ #astrophotos #backyardastronomy #astronomyphotography #spacetoday #spaceporn #spacepics #telescope #supernova #supernovas #hubble #hubbleclassic - @needspacemedia on Instagram

NGC 2244: A Star Cluster in the Rosette Nebula Credit & Copyright: J. C. Cuillandre & G. Fahlman (CFHT Staff), CFHT Explanation: In the heart of the Rosette Nebula lies a bright open cluster of stars that lights up the nebula. The stars of NGC 2244 formed from the surrounding gas only four million years ago and emit light and wind that define the nebulas appearance today. High energy light from the bright young stars of NGC 2244 ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas clouds to create the red emission nebula appearance. The hot wind of particles that streams away from the cluster stars contributes to an already complex menagerie of gas and dust filaments while slowly evacuating the cluster center. NGC 2244 measures about 50 light-years across, lies about 4500 light-years away, and is visible with binoculars towards the constellation of Monoceros. - @astro_photography_ on Instagram

Those most luminous orbs over our heads are more famous than any deep space objects and yet are typically not the subject of Astro photography in and of themselves. IC1396 Elephant Trunks Nebula - Heading out to pristine dark skies had bode well for me off late and I decided to do the same to capture M101. Little did I know the night would be completely derailed. Turbulent winds ruined guiding as I completed setting up the rig. After hours of troubleshooting I gave up and decided to hop around the sky doing short exposures on various targets, just to enjoy a view of them. In the end I decided to aim at something in the milky way band, specifically the elephants trunk nebula. Within minutes the turbulent winds died down and I had excellent stars in my exposures. I started capturing frames on the elephants trunk and within an hour I was out of juice in my power tanks. I called it a night and went back home. Here’s an integration of just 55mins of data.⁣ ⁣ The elephants trunk nebula is a massive nebula in the thick band of the Milky Way. This target is the right size for my little Redcat51 and with the edgeHD I was barely able to get a view of the trunk. I didn’t think I’d have enough for a half decent picture, but a moonless bortle 3 sky can do wonders. I was surprised as to how much detail I was able to capture in such a short time, even bringing out the dark dust across the image. I wouldn’t call this image done, but I’m definitely happy with the intermediary results. This is a widefield view one of my favorite objects: NGC 7635, the bubble nebula. It also includes a lot of interresting objects. This was taken from my front year. The last two photos are my first attempt I did in this target 11 months ago when I first started in astrophoto, it’s crazy to see the difference, going from a modded dslr to @zwoasi 294Mc-pro is a major factor! The bubble is created by the stellar wind from a massive hot young central star. The nebula is near a giant molecular cloud which contains the expansion of the bubble nebula while itself being excited by the hot central star, causing it to glow. Pretty awesome! The widefield view also includes: Sh 2-157, M52, NGC 7538 and part of Sh 2-161.
