- @storiadellarte_ on Instagram

Happy October everyone! October was the eighth month in the Roman calendar (hence the name) and had, just as today, 31 days. The month was under the guardianship of the Roman God, Mars. It was the month associated with the end of the farming season and also the season for military campaigning.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Image is October, Mosaic of months, from Thysdrus, El Djem, Tunisia, 3rd century AD. How powerless an emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was! The Mughal Empire was in a continuous state of decline ever since Aurangzebs death. By the time Bahadur Shah Zafar became the Emperor, his real authority existed only within the walls of the Red Fort. The British Resident (representative of Governor General to the Palace), Sir Thomas Metcalfe, kept a firm eye on Zafar’s daily life and frequently forbade him from exercising rights that the Emperor regarded as sacrosanct. No nobleman from outside Delhi could enter the Red Fort without Metcalfe’s permission. To enforce his right to rent from his own lands, Zafar had to make an application to the British courts. He could not present gems from the crown jewels even to his own family members without first informing the Resident, and was occasionally, humiliatingly, made to ask for the return of unauthorised gifts if the agent came to hear about them. Zafar could not gift khilats (robes of honour, symbols of overlordship) on noblemen from outside the Delhi without Metcalfe’s say-so: when Raja Gulab Singh of Kollesur paid a visit to the court, presenting a nazr (or offering of fealty) of ‘a horse and 7 gold mohurs’, in return for which Zafar gave him a khilat, Metcalfe promptly made the Raja return it. A petition was received from Mirza Shoojat Shah stating that a chief had arrived and was desirous of visiting the Palace. Zafar replied that without the Agent’s permission no chief of a foreign territory could be allowed entrance. Zafar had once written: Ya mujhe afsar-e-shahana banaya hota Ya mera Taj gadayana banaya hota (Either you should have made me a royal officer Or you should have given me a crown like a beggars bowl) Source: The Last Mughal by William Dalrymple Image: Illustrated Times London #mughal #Delhigram #delhi6 #delhiwale #WahhIndia #olddelhi #dildilli #delhidiaries #storiesofindia #delhi #history #heritage #vintage #storytelling #storyteller #story #mughalhistory #mughalempire - @stories.from.history_ on Instagram

This portrait of a young woman embodies the distinctive expression and resplendent detail of Nicholas Hilliard’s miniature paintings from the late Elizabethan period. The sitter’s unbound hair and her shimmery red silk gown, trimmed in a silver and velvety blue background, showcase the painter’s ability to capture an array of textures and minute details—the scale of which required a fine pointed brush composed of soft squirrel hairs. . A fair amount is known about sixteenth-century miniature painting, or “limning,” due to Hilliard’s own writing on the subject, a sort of how-to guide entitled “Treatise on the Art of Limning” (ca. 1600). Although Hilliard’s writing gives a clear account of his craft, technical study of his #miniatures reveal a great deal more, like how strictly he adhered to his own advice about using “the finest and purest colours.” . Recent analysis of this work using macro X-ray fluorescence scanning (MA-XRF) highlights the precision with which Hilliard applied paint. Each scan shows a map of where elements like gold, silver, and copper exist in the miniature. The vibrant blue behind the unknown “lady” sends a strong signal for copper, which corresponds to the costly pigment #azurite (shown in blue). One can see how crisply the blue pigment was applied along the contours of the sitter’s sleeves and the thicker locks of hair, leaving an empty space for those passages. Among the final details added to the portrait were subtle touches of ground gold leaf, called shell gold, on the woman’s earring and along the oval edge of the vellum support. . MA-XRF analysis was conducted by Richard Hark, conservation scientist @yaleipch; technical study and photo details by #conservator Polly Saltmarsh. . Images: #NicholasHilliard, “Portrait of a Lady,” 1600–15, watercolor and gouache on vellum laid onto card, #Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection; Detail of the sitter’s left eye; MA-XRF scan showing silver; MA-XRF scan showing copper; Strands of hair—some left in reserve when azurite was applied; MA-XRF scan showing gold on the sitter’s earring and outer edge of the oval . #YCBA #MiniatureMonday - @yalebritishart on Instagram

Illustrations from the late 12th or early 13th century Guthlac Roll, depicting scenes from the story of Saint Guthlac (British Library, Harley Roll Y 6). Born into a noble Mercian family around the year 674, Guthlac was one of the most prominent early Anglo-Saxon saints. According to his biographer Felix, who wrote shortly after the saints death in 714/5, Guthlac spent much of his youth as a soldier before abandoning his worldly ambitions and becoming a monk, and later a hermit. His hermitage was located on the remote island of Crowland in the Lincolnshire fens, a place that was apparently inhospitable due to it being haunted by demons. A good chunk of Felixs work is dedicated to Guthlacs struggle against these creatures, culminating in an episode in which they drag him to the gates of hell, only for him to be rescued by Saint Bartholomew. _ The images above are largely based on Felixs narrative, and show Guthlac: abandoning the military life; sailing to Crowland; building a chapel; being harassed by demons; being dragged to the mouth of hell; exorcising a possessed man; being placed in a tomb following his death. ________ #medieval #middleages #history #historic #historical #art #design #heritage #demon #england #english #uk #gb #britain #british #lincolnshire #saint #holy #europe #european - @middle_ages_history on Instagram

According to an article by Gaeta et al. 2017 (details below), this 15th century painting of St. Roch (who is often invoked as a protector from plague) may represent an early depiction of Guinea worm.
