As promised here he is, Guy Bachelor our North Channel swimmer. In 2018, Guy completed the Catalina channel swim off the west coast of America. This made him the 186th person world wide to complete the grand slam of open water swimming having completed a solo swim of the English channel in 2015 and circumnavigation of Manhattan Island NY in 2017. Now Guy is set to complete the north channel swim which totals 21.6 miles, only 5 miles shorter than the London Marathon. Shout out to final year medicine student, Arrabella King, who has just published a paper in The Royal Australasian College of Physician’s Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health! 🤛 As part of her Scholarly Intensive Placement (or SIP), Arrabella spent 6 weeks studying data from the Early Neurodevelopment Clinic at @monashchildrenshospital. This study characterised infants attending the Early Neurodevelopment Clinic and determined the rate of early cerebral palsy diagnosis. Arabellas research showed that its feasible to implement early cerebral palsy diagnosis guidelines into clinical practice. Our paper may help inform the development of further services for high-risk infants. By providing families with an early diagnosis of cerebral palsy, the Early Neurodevelopment Clinic helps to facilitate access to early intervention and support. Basically, the earlier the problem is identified, the sooner it is possible to help improve motor and cognitive development, and family wellbeing. An incredible outcome in just 6 weeks. ✨✨👻💩🐛✨ With chronic illnesses, people tell you there is no cure. This makes it sound like for other conditions there is a cure, something you can do or take and all of the symptoms and reasons for disease just go away. I guess I don’t believe that anything just goes away. I think about grief and heartbreak and trauma and how people don’t just forget their experiences and even if they do how these will still mold their lives. . . There isn’t really anything in this world that can just disappear without leaving a mark. I think about having longform Lyme/Babesia/EBV and how many times I heard people say “there’s no cure”. This was so not helpful. There aren’t only two categories, things that are curable and things that are not. Some chronic conditions your body may be able to keep under control and feel fine with and something like a UTI may disappear only to come back often and change the way peeing feels for the rest of your life. Saying that something like strep throat has a cure and something like lyme doesn’t feels fake. Having strep and taking antibiotics will leave a lasting effect on you. Not always in a bad way or a way that means you are sicker after, but you won’t be the same person after having strep as you were before and that’s totally okay. . . Four years ago I got a scary infection that needed to be treated with super strong IV antibiotics and after three days the infection was gone (cured!) but the aftermath of having it is something I’ll probably be dealing with forever. . . Sometimes things happen randomly and uncontrollably but other times it’s because our defenses are down from stress, sadness, or a million other things. We may get something we can deal with like a cold, or infection, but even after we feel better and a doctor says we have fought off the bacteria or virus, we still have the chronic conditions that lead to that happening in the first place. . . So what does healing mean? Sometimes I (maybe many others also) want it to mean that the thing (traumatic experience, depression, yeast infections, cancer etc) is gone, that we will no longer be haunted or affected by it, but that has never been my experience of healing......... - @anachron_ on Instagram

TOOLSDAY N°07 Wer kennt es nicht, kaum will man mit der Arbeit loslegen, stellt man fest, dass wieder mal alles stumpf ist. Damit mir das nicht mehr passiert, habe ich mir den Nasschleifer T4 von @tormek_sharpening gekauft und gleich noch um das Drechslerset ergänzt. Dank dem Drechselset sind meine Drechseleisen jetzt immer super schnell nachgeschärft und ich kann ganz schnell wieder weiter drechseln 🤘 Aber auch meine Stemmeisen sind mit dem Nassschleifer sofort wieder startklar und rasiermesserscharf. Für die Drechseleisen legt Tormek auch gleich noch Aufkleber bei, auf denen man die genauen Einstellungen am Schleifstein und am dazugehörigen Tool auf der Schiene notieren kann. So kann man nichts vergessen (so wie ich das sonst immer tue 😂). Alles in allem bin ich super zufrieden mit der Maschine, dank ihr macht das Drechseln oder das Stemmen gleich doppelt so viel Spaß, weil man einfach immer scharfes Werkzeug in der Werkstatt hat. Und jetzt zu euch: Wie und mit was schäft ihr eure Werkzeuge? Seid ihr vllt sogar noch von der alten Schule und schäft per Hand? Doing earthworks in our orchard in the far north means we have uncovered some ancient kauri logs. These ancient northland kauri forests have been preserved in the black peat soil for thousands of years so the wood is permanently stained a lovely dark brown colour. Last year, Ty (our 14yo) began using some of this rare native timber to make these beautiful earrings (designed by me and modelled by our daughter 😍) for pocket money. Correction of chin. ————— Story: This patient has had orthodontic treatment during childhood. Once she became an adult, realized her lower jaw was small. Two different implants were placed and removed by 2 plastic surgeons. As a result, the lip became crooked and chin larger on the left side than right. Big asymmetry!!! Correction: Removed the malpositioned implant during surgery. It had caused lots of deformity on the chin bone. The bone was corrected by sliding #genioplasty. It will take few more months to fully appreciate the results as the tissue still trying to go back where it was prior to the implants. I turned around a few times to see if you were really talking to me and not to someone else ! I will remember for ever the day you called me to realize the shooting. It was at your impressive parisian studio 7L. You brought all my furniture you had in your flat. I asked you if you’re working all the time like that and you looked at me and said something I will never forget : « You know, the more you eat, the more you want to eat. The more you have sex, the more you want to have sex, the more you work, the more talented you are ». Two days later, I received the 10 framed photos with your signature. My favorite is the one where you signed : « For Ora ïto, with all my friendship. Karl ». It is one of the best gift I’ve ever received and I keep it preciously but I don’t hang it on the wall because it looks too egocentric ! The first gasoline pump was invented and sold by Sylvanus Bowser in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This pump, held one barrel of gasoline used marble valves and a wooden plunger, was not used for automobiles, as they had not been invented yet. It was instead used for some kerosene lamps and stoves. He later improved upon the pump by adding safety measures, and also by adding a hose to directly dispense fuel into automobiles. For a while, the term bowser was used to refer to a vertical gasoline pump. Many early gasoline pumps had a calibrated glass cylinder on top. The desired quantity of fuel was pumped up into the cylinder as indicated by the calibration. Then the pumping was stopped and the gasoline was let out into the customers tank by gravity. When metering pumps came into use, a small glass globe with a turbine inside replaced the measuring cylinder, but assured the customer that gasoline really was flowing into the tank.
