One of the newest projects to the Wooden Walls Public Art Project is a commissioned (site-specific to Asbury Park) composition by artist, Ed Fairburn @edfairburn • “I manipulate paper maps to construct other forms, usually portraiture. I call this process topopointillism; a direct combination of topography and pointillism. Using traditional materials such as ink, paint and pencil, I make gradual changes to the contours, roads and other patterns found in cartography. These changes allow me to tease out the human form, resulting in a comfortable coexistence of figure and landscape. I aim to preserve the functionality of each map by feeding the composition instead of fighting it – I often spend hours studying the terrain before I begin any physical processes. I’m interested in the degree of subtlety behind each synchronisation, and the way in which a completed map behaves more like a portrait when viewed from further away – it’s almost paradoxical that a portrait should lose detail when examined closely.” -Ed Fairburn • He repurposes old maps, transforming them into beautiful, highly-detailed portraits. By merging landscape and humanity, Fairburn reminds us that we are a product of our environment—and vice versa. • We are thrilled to have one of Ed’s creations as part of our “Art Lives Here” series. His piece can be seen in the Historic Casino Building along side of the photographs by Mike McLaughlin @mikemclaughlinphotography • Thank you to @pasqdeboer and @theasburyparkboardwalk for the support that helped us add this unique piece to our ongoing art project on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. - @woodenwallsproject on Instagram

En el marco de la Conferencia Internacional “Infraestructural potential of Landscape” que dictará Martí Franch este viernes. OCTUBRE 02 A LAS 15 hrs. 𝑾𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒕. 𝑷𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏. . 401 years ago, in 1619, the first enslaved Africans arrived in English-occupied North America, at Virginia’s Point Comfort. . We don’t know most of the names of the “20. and odd” men and women who stepped off the WHITE LION and were sold or traded in the Colony of Virginia, in exchange for food and supplies. But their arrival marked one of the most significant moments in American history - the beginning of an institution of oppression, which would last almost two and a half centuries, and shape the founding of our nation and our culture. . On Tuesday, August 25th, at 2 PM EST, we will be ringing FRIENDSHIP OF SALEM’S ship bell for 4 minutes. We do so to honor over 400 years of African American experience; experience of not just trauma, but resilience, beauty, and strength. . This commemoration will be livestreamed on our Facebook and Instagram. We invite you to join us in solidarity here, or by grabbing your own bell, to honor African American heritage. . 📸: Detail of 1624 map of Virginia showing the location of Point Comfort (now @fortmonroenps) and Jamestown (Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division) #FindYourPark #400Years #BlackHistory #AmericanHistory #NPS #EncuentraTuParque #FindYourVirtualPark #HonestHistory (NMH) - @salemmaritimenps on Instagram

NAME-CALLING By Dr. Michaela Ann Cameron (@oldparramatta) “Terra Australis,” “New Holland,” “#Australia,” “Rose Hill,” “Parramatta,” “#Kamay” “Botany Bay” “#Warrane” “Sydney Cove”… The newcomers made lots of decisions about what they were going to call places and landmarks in the penal colony, and even sometimes changed their minds, as in the case of #RoseHill / #Parramatta. Scholars writing about this period also have to make decisions about how to refer to the people and places they discuss in their published work—&, as Editor of the @creatensw-funded @stjohnscemeteryproject & an ethnohistorian, I am no different. A couple of weeks ago I published Name-Calling, my “Dual Naming Policy” on the website, a policy which has been applied to all published essays in the @stjohnscemeteryproject. You can read it by clicking the LINK IN MY PROFILE. The essay discusses my policy of ‘#dualnaming’ places as a #Reconciliation initiative. Topics covered include; navigating the contentious issue of Name-Calling in a project devoted to a state listed heritage site, which has a diverse group of stakeholders with conflicting perspectives & all of whom must feel included & respected (i.e. a site on #Burramattagal Country that is simultaneously a sacred site for European newcomers); the revitalisation of #Aboriginal #soundways & #Language by ‘sounding,’ which in this case typically occurs via audiation; & the acknowledgement of #FirstPeoples’ original custodianship whilst also reconciling their different ways of knowing, experiencing & naming Country, including their #sacredgeography & #spiritualhistory, with that of the newcomers. • IMAGE CREDITS: (1) Detail from Samuel Dunn, “A General Map of the World, or Terraqueous Globe” (1797) @geographicusmaps via Wikimedia Commons. Antique market find of the day! This map of Paris is from the 17th century - from the days of Henry IV and Louis XIII. You can see the much smaller city is surrounded by the Wall of Charles V, which was demolished just after this time period, around 1640. You can still see the gates of this wall in the area Strasbourg-Saint Denis, engulfed as the city spread outwards. Can you spot the Louvre or other landmarks? - @fattiretours on Instagram
