I have alopecia. Alopecia actually just means hair loss. There are lots of different types (androgenetic alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, telogen effluvium, etc). Too many to list here! I started out with alopecia areata which was patches of hair loss. This is a type where the immune system, for whatever reason, starts to see the hair follicle as a threat & starts to attack it. The immune system cells kind of swarms around the hair follicle preventing the hair from growing. I progressed on from just the patches and lost everything, my hair, my eyebrows, eyelashes, body hair. At this point it was then called alopecia (areata) universalis. Total loss of all hair everywhere. As Im currently sporting half an eyebrow and 90% of my eyelashes Im probably somewhere between alopecia universalis and alopecia (areata) totalis (which is total loss of hair from one area). . My hair loss started as two 10p size patches in May 1995 (age 11). One on each side of my head. They gradually grew over a period of about 6 months. I lost maybe 40/50% of my hair and then they started to fill in. I seem to remember having good regrowth by the January and being able to wear a pony tail again! The following May (1996) it started to fall out pretty rapidly and I lost about 80% over a two week period, the rest followed not long after. I didnt have it for a while and then it started to grow back. By the year 2000 (age 16) I had probably 95% of it back. This continued to fill in over the next few years. But then at the end of 2003 the patches started again. I lost maybe 30/40% over a few months but AGAIN (!) they started to fill in. And AGAIN, a few months later it all came out pretty rapidly over the course of a couple of weeks (age 20). Since then Ive had it try to grow back a few times but nothing more than a small patch of hair. I did have one eyebrow (just the one!) grow back for about five years which is the period of time that this photo was taken! . John Inserras passing is unfathomable, it’s brutally, painfully and sinfully unfair especially when it strikes someone with so much more life to live. We will forever endure the crushing gravity of his absence. We will remember how he was always available, accountable, and adorably ready to help anyone, anyone. John was the kindest friend to all with better legs than most. He did an unmeasurable amount for Body Chemistry Fitness, Xtreme Fitness and everyone who walked through the doors. We will be forever grateful. For this is why the motley crew of friends he collected and cultivated, who loved him dearly are profoundly changed by his loss. Hey Mac. What’s up man. I just got home from your exhibit here in LA. It’s January 18th, 2020. I rode the bus there alone, looking out the window, listening to your albums the whole way there. I did my best not to choke up on the bus haha. I stood in line alone, for like almost 3 hours my dude. It was tough, but I wanted to do it. While I stood in line I kept running through your tapes and when Good News came on shuffle I couldn’t help but to break down. The next one was PA nights. And after that Best Day Ever. The waterworks hit me hard in line, staring up at the stars listening to your words ring true through my headphones. But REALLY, you should have seen it man, all ages, all races, all genders waiting out in the cold just to see some photos of you. People all over the world really love you Mac, they really do. But none most of all than us Yinzers. At the exhibit we were able to write you a message, and As I wrote my message for you I started crying all over the keyboard as I typed “I love you Mac”, the man assisting people with writing their messages embraced me. I think I might have been the only person he saw grieving today, the wounds still feel fresh. And to be honest I may need to soak my phone in rice after typing this out. But let me get this out man. You helped shape me into who I am, inspired me, taught me about where I’m from and reconnected me to a culture and a city that runs through my veins. I see a lot of myself in you and vice versa, as many people do. That’s why we were all so proud, you injected so much positivity and ambitions into Pennsylvania kids lives and I will carry that with me to the end of time. You touched so many people over the course of your career. But for me you touched me deeper than most things along my path have, I would have given anything to have met you. To have kicked back and rolled up, to have compared Pittsburgh tatts, to have picked your brain about music, and to have just kicked it laughing like a child. But I know that time will come.
