I sell tea at the famous Liido beach in Mogadishu and try to help those that cant swim. The busiest days are Thursdays and Fridays as huge droves of young people flock to the beach. Some of them love watching the views whilst sipping tea, whilst others prefer to go swimming. Sadly, a huge number of my customers do not know how to swim so I purchased a set of swimming life vests. So every time they buy a cup of tea from me, I ask whether they are planning to go into the waters and if they reply yes, I hand them a vest that they can borrow for free. De acordo com o nosso colaborador, “eles têm um forte senso de comunidade e, apesar de seus recursos limitados, sempre têm chá, pão e iogurte para receber aos visitantes. Durante o tempo que passei lá, as pessoas Wakhi me fizeram sentir como convidado, impressionando-me com sua generosidade, hospitalidade e bondade.” . 🇺🇸 According to the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Afghanistan has been considered the least peaceful country for the past two years. This means that the country has suffered conflicts both internally and internationally, in addition to investing a large part of the national income in weapon and armed forces, money that could go to education and health funds. Although a large area of the country is closed to tourists and presents risk for its residents and visitors, there are other parts, as the northeast of the country, that the war has not arrived, and its residents live quietly and are very receptive to tourists. According to our collaborator, “they have a strong sense of community and despite of their limited resources they always have tea, bread and yoghurt to welcome visitors. Surfers can be pretty disconnected from the history of the places we recreate. We often think of the “locals” as the rich white dudes born into families that own coastal property and have easy access to a particular surf spot. But the real locals, the original locals, are of course the indigenous people who recreated along those same coasts for thousands of years before white colonizers showed up, stole their land and pushed their communities inland. To shed some light on the indigenous history of iconic surf zones, we’re launching a column called “Whose Coast Are You Surfing?” on Surfer.com, starting with the Kumeyaay Nation’s deep San Diego roots. COMMEMORATING THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLDS INDIGENOUS PEOPLES. A little excerpt from our upcoming THE SKIN OF CHITWAN _________________ The indigenous Tharus of the borderland tracts now called Chitwan had shrines of forest deities and phantoms that terrorised specific locations. In the past, these coordinates gave the Tharus their bearings in space. Stories and memories of gods, ghosts, and animals provided Tharus a frame of reference for connecting with place across time, for keeping the ancestral past as an open-ended forum for present and future participation. Being oriented to a particular place means knowing how to find one’s way and how to pace oneself in order to make or avoid encounters with other acknowledged beings who share the space. Today a whole network of new itineraries and directions have been grafted onto the landscapes of Chitwan. The changes have come crashing with new tools for churning the earth, with visions of Nepal’s headlong leap across the horizon of progress and prosperity. Contemporary Nepalis think of Chitwan as the place where wilderness has been preserved for viewing, but its recent history is a chronicle of mounting ecological crises and crumbling environmental responses: large-scale deforestation, intensification of land use, contamination, species extinction, destruction of homes and habitat. These are episodes of the Anthropocene, the word we use to designate the present condition in which humanity is—willfully, but also in ways beyond their control—engineering the very conditions of life and death on Earth, whose unmitigated ambitions have penetrated the core of geophysical dynamics. The dramatic consequences of climate change aside, the Anthropocene is also the story of how entire sensoriums of living, surviving, and thriving are disposed for the reproduction of capital.
