I was around 23 here and I remember my agent calling me in Milan and telling me to lay off the pasta . I was 125 lbs. ( up from 117 ) and she said if I continued to gain weight they were going to have to send me home. I felt terrible . I was so sad. And I ate spinach w Parmesan every day thereafter and sometimes when no one was looking snuck in a side of angel hair pasta. What a prison in such a beautiful country ! Major #Throwback to my flight from USA to Taiwan and then from Taiwan to Malaysia. There were only 2 Malaysians flying home, myself & another girl. She sat at the end of the plane and I sat right in front. Looking back, I regret not asking to try out first class! Great in-flight lunch. Tasting nasi lemak & redang after so many months in the USA brought tears to my eyes. . In all seriousness I thank God that airlines were still flying at the time. This picture was taken on March 23. An embodied Sadhana (practice) 🧘♀️ Being a yoga teacher, I’m portrayed as well put together in my classes (even after sharing anecdotes to the contrary!) As an eternal student I don’t fan the misperception of the perfect yogi (does that even exist?!) Here’s a candid pic of my own practice last week; colour uncoordinated pj’s and bed hair for added effect 😁 Contrary to popular belief, perfection in yoga is a white-supremacy construct; the perfectly curated highlight reel of asanas(postures) is only one of the eight limbs of philosophy that’s highlighted. Yoga is an act of devotion and self-care. In these tender times it is more important to show up and maintain a ritual toward self-preservation than add pressure to perform. Starting the day by connecting to the Divine is non-negotiable; a kriya (cleansing practice) with some gentle movement & meditation for 15 mins minimum. The asana practice I usually get to later in the day. For anyone who thinks there’s no time in the day here are a few things to try even in bed! As you wake up (instead of grabbing your phone); 🌸take 3-5 deep breaths, tuning into the felt experience of the inhale and exhale. 🌸have one (or both hands) on your heart or anywhere on your body, tuning into how your body feels in that moment 🌸saying an affirmation to start your day (Eg: My body is safe no matter what I may be feeling; I am safe; This too shall pass; I am supported by a kind, loving and generous universe.) 🌸gratitude - think of something you’re grateful for(for me it’s breathing uninhibited; a roof above filled with love) this can be as many as you like) 🌸drinking a cup of tea or coffee mindfully. The intention I bring to my practice is what matters. To wake up with a grateful heart to know I am alive and well. To acknowledge these everyday miracles first, to commit with devotion to a force greater than me, rather than be consumed by the inconsequential. This happens in varying degrees, and evolves organically. Showing up daily to whatever the practice unfolds without expectation is key; a powerful act of surrendering to grace. Summertime 2010 brought a big change in my vision and my painting. This was “The Other Girl”, a 200x170cm oil on linen. It was the year of my solo show in @markjasongallery in London, “Close Strangers”, where, as the title suggests, I represented young people physically close but emotionally distant, The stress was on the narrative side, my paintings started to relate stories, rather than just visual moments. Here the guy is confronted by a girl while he is with some other girl, and it is all about body language, the defiance of the brunette, the unease of the guy, the self-confidence of the blonde... I found these guys in the promanade in Barcelona, I asked them to pose for me and they were very kind to agree, although they spoke French and we had some language barrier to overcome! I turned 33 in 2016. Yes, I know, you thought I was in my early early 20s. For my “Jesus Year” I purchased a ticket to visit a friend in Leeds, England. Leeds has a special place in my heart; that story is for another time. During my trip, my friend Jade, a badass fashionista, asked if I wanted to get a tattoo. MY FIRST TATTOO. I knew what I wanted, a bird in a nest, no a bird standing on a branch facing away from the nest… Dianna, I can’t remember but this was gonna be my FIRST tattoo in one of my favorite countries. I paced back and forth in the shop for 30 minutes before finally deciding to get the thang. The tattooer told me that most people get images or characters facing inward towards the tattooee (I’m just making up words now). I remember telling him that I was tired of facing inward and wanted the bird to be on the edge of the brach facing away from me. I needed to see beyond myself. That same year, I made the big leap and moved to NYC. My time in NYC could be a whole book covering trauma, healing, risk, perseverance, and undoing but I don’t feel like typing that all out. I said yes to a job, in a city I had prayed to live in for years. I got what I asked for; the good, the bad, the ugly. What I learned while living in NYC: Healthy boundaries are good. I am enough. I am bold and brave and strong knowing strength does not mean I’m stone, it just means I can ask for help when I need it (still learning how to do this one) and its ok to cry (people who know me know I HATE CRYING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE) but I’ve done a lot of that in the past month and some change. I can receive without feeling guilt or pressure to return a service for something intended to be a gift. I can give without the fear that I will be without. But, the biggest lesson I learned was that I can make it through almost anything, as long as I have the right people in the ring with me. Good Night NYC. My mom retired in 2011 but has spent the last seven years (including early March of this year) flying to D.C. yearly to lobby for postal rights and to fight to prevent privatization of a service that is so crucial to so many and is in fact mandated in our constitution.
