С «картошкой» связано множество журфаковских баек и легенд, а профессор кафедры стилистики русского языка Ирина Васильевна Анненкова в книге «Наш дом на Моховой» даже называет её «символом студенческой осени». ⠀ Символы нашей осени – защитные маски, комбинированное расписание, долгожданные встречи с однокурсниками (надеемся, на безопасном расстоянии) за пределами Zoom и, конечно, согревающий чай из буфета. 1999 Black Power. Waiohiki, Hawkes Bay – Daily Telegraph. Shot on a Canon Eos-1N with Kodak T400CN. 1999 saw the closure of the Daily Telegraph. It merged with the Herald Tribune to form Hawke’s Bay Today, both Napier and Hastings lost part of their identity in the process and good people lost their jobs. Leading up to the closure, there was a lot of potential energy in that newsroom, including Kathryn Ryan (nine to noon), Mary Longmore and Leah Haines @writeonleah for whom I shot this image, for a feature on gang music in the Bay. Photographically, things were starting to fall into place. The previous year, John Cowpland @alphapixnz won Photographer of the Year at the media awards, in those days the prize was attending the Missouri Photo WorkShop. He came back transformed, shooting on the next level and armed with a stack of books that he generously lent - Pictures on the Page -Harold Evans, Photojournalism the Professional Approach -Kenneth Kobre and my favourite The Truth Needs No Ally –Howard Chapnick . The pages of these books filled the gaps in my education, giving me an ethos to work towards. The photographers I look up to most, it’s their approach, passion and dedication that attracts me. When their obsession is too great, when their reality is blurred, and photography becomes their religion, that’s where great images are created. And if photography was a religion, photojournalism is the gospel. Photojournalism is a belief system, held together by a tight ethical framework, That in itself, Is reflected in each and every individual photographer, Who is striving for excellence, integrity, And taking pictures that report truthfully, honestly and objectively. Photojournalism had given me a voice, and I was learning that voice could be powerful. On a side note, it was around this time that John and the chief Warren Buckland sellotaped up the zoom of my lens, so I could only shoot wide, forcing me to get close to the subject.
