#FinsburyCircus is the Square Mile’s largest open space and London’s first public park. The beautiful gardens that we know today with its mature #London plane trees (some over 200 years old) and fine Japanese Pagoda tree, (the only one in the City) were developed in 1815 when Charles Dance the Younger undertook the landscape of the gardens and introduced several more varieties of plants, trees and flowers. Nevertheless, the beginning of its story dates back to 1606 when it was laid out as London’s first public park. The area which was originally part of Finsbury Manor, having existed since 1527, on which the second #BethlemRoyalHospital had stood since 1675. Bethlem Hospital was Englands first psychiatric hospital. The origin of the hospital can be traced in the 13th century. In 1547 it was granted by Henry VIII to the #City ofLondon as a hospital for the mentally ill. In 1675 it was rebuilt in #Moorfields (eventually redeveloped into #FinsburyCircus). It became a London landmark and inspired a number of poems, dramas and works of art. When it was completed in 1676 it was unlike any asylum before seen. Its 540ft-long (165m) façade, complete with Corinthian columns and cupola-topped turret, was inspired by Louis XIV’s Tuileries Palace in Paris. The statues of ‘melancholy’ and ‘raving’ – thought to be the two sides of mental illness – crowned the entrance gates to the hospital. The hospital moved to Lambeth in 1815 and when it moved to Surrey in 1930 the buildings were then incorporated into the #ImperialWarMuseum. Despite all its changes, Finsbury Circus remains an absolute pearl in the City of London. The City of London Corporation acquired this open space by an act of #Parliament in 1900. It’s #MansardMonday! Few and far between in Reno, UNR has some exceptional examples. Morrill Hall / 1885 Morrill Hall was the first building on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. A three-story (plus basement) “Second Empire”-style edifice, the building was constructed in 1885-1886 after the relocation of the University of Nevada from Elko to Reno, a process that began in 1884. Relatively few Second Empire-style buildings remain in Reno, making this a rare local example of this particular type of Victorian architecture. The cornerstone was laid on Sept. 12, 1885 and the building was ready for occupancy by March of 1886. Designed by Reno architect M.J. Curtis, Morrill Hall was built for the sum of $13,500 and originally housed the entire State University until the Agricultural Experiment Station (1889) and Stewart Hall (1890) were built. Neither of those remains standing. Originally, the basement of Morrill Hall was divided into four rooms, with space for the janitor, storage, assay furnaces, quartz crushers, and workshops. The main floor contained the Principal’s office (for the head of academics), a reception room, the Board of Regents’ room, a library, museum, assayer’s office, assaying room, weighing room, lavatory, and gymnasium. On the second floor were a large lecture hall and two classrooms, and on the top floor, two large apartments, a general assembly room, and an armory. All instruction was provided by two professors. At the time it was built, Nevada was little more than a collection of rough mining camps and railroad towns. The new University hall symbolized the determination of the people of Nevada to provide educational opportunities for themselves and their children. The building was named after U.S. Senator Justin S. Morrill of Vermont, author of the 1862 Land-Grant College Act that made the founding of the University of Nevada possible. Weve marked the occasion at our house, just as we always have–with a lovely big fresh batch of ANZAC cookies. Im also currently having a read through this 1920 publication, and you can, too, because the whole thing is free to view on Trove at http://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-81881832 (but I highly recommend you have some tissues handy). My own historical research for @stjohnscemeteryproject this week unexpectedly took me into the Australian Forces enlistment records once again, and there is no better time than this to share with all of you how you can search those, too, in the event that you want to learn more about an ancestor who served. Head to this link at the National Archives of Australia to conduct a Name Search and select the relevant war from the drop down list. (You dont have to include a service number if you dont know it, a name is sufficient): https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScreens/NameSearch.aspx When you see a result, select View Digital Copy towards the top right corner of the search result and youll be able to view each individual page of your ancestors enlistment papers, details of their medals, medical records, which often indicate their movements and where they were fighting, as well as where they convalesced, even heart wrenching, handwritten letters from anxious family members enquiring about their loved one, etc. It is very emotional but also fascinating because of how it provides a much deeper insight into the experience of war both on the battlefront and at home. #ANZACDay2020 #ANZACs #Parramatta #lestweforget - @oldparramatta on Instagram

#200YearsOfOldStone: During the peak of the Civil War in 1863, members from Old Stone Church helped purchase a house on Wilson Street called the Home for Friendless Strangers. Individuals displaced or impacted by the Civil War were taken here for comfort, aide, and support. The Wilson Street house was later named the Lakeside Hospital and went on to become @uhhospitals_cle. Today, UH sits on more than 35 acres of land and leads the way in healthcare and technology. There are no limits to what a few strong-willed and passionate people can accomplish. We are thankful for the Old Stone members who set an example for each of us to lead with kindness. On Sunday, September 23rd, police marched in and arrested 250 Black men in South Atlanta. These men had gathered to discuss how to protect their community. Miles away, police had caught wind of the gathering and panicked at the thought of an impending retaliatory attack. They stormed the neighborhood to disarm and disable the group. A shoot-out ensued when they arrived. In the midst of the gunfire, a white police officer was killed. And just like that, the #southatlanta men were quickly rounded up and carted off for booking. It was one of many scenes of chaos and injustice unfurling across Atlanta during the race riots in 1906. This story, and the larger narrative about the Atlanta Race Riots, wasn’t included in the history curriculum of Atlanta Public Schools until 2006, one hundred years after its occurrence. And South Atlanta was #Brownsville back then. Just over 100 years later, we wanted to be sure to share it with our friends and neighbors across the city. At FCS, we’re fixated on neighboring, dignity, and development. THE BEGINNING OF INSTITUT FOR (X) - 1st of October 2009 After carefully searching the city for free m2, Bureau Detours succeeded in finding a location with the proper size and potential for exploitation: Toldboden (The customs house), now the A-house, on the old area of Godsbanen. A positive dialogue with Jakob Sennels (former technical chief of Kulturhus Aarhus) among others, brightens the opportunity to take over the space permanently. With a solid rhetoric during negotiations, it finally succeeds in getting a verbal commitment from Aarhus Kommune, to take over the keys for the area. The old toldbod is now in the hands of Bureau Detours, with the message “Do it properly!” A few days later “Remix” is held, a party and celebration of the recent takeover. Many visitors gather this evening and the attendance from the municipality stands out. After the party, inquiries to become a part of the space starts ticking in. Suddenly, the big empty buildings doesn’t seem to be hard to activate. At this time, Bureau Detours only consists of a few people based in Århus, so the interest from the outside is especially welcome. As the platform grows, it clarifies its need for a name. Because of the constant shift of people and project and with a conscious lack of vision and rules, the name Institut For (X) is chosen. The X represents a variable, which allows the users of the platform to attach different meanings to it. The houses of X are given a letter, in the order they are taken over. Robert Hooke was #onthisday in 1635 in Freshwater, Isle of Wright. Hooke was a Surveyor to the City of London and, in partnership with Sir Christopher Wren, created the design of The Monument, which took six years to be completed, from 1671 to 1677. Hooke worked with Wren on the design of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, Montagu House in Bloomsbury, and the Bethlem Royal Hospital. They were keen astronomers, which is why The Monument was built to also serve as a Zenith telescope. 🔭 Hooke died on 3 March 1703. The annual 15th August Fair Day has been a tradition in Kenmare for over 200 years. Taking over the town but mainly in Fair Green, known locally as the Square - even though it is triangular in shape! The Fair was originally over two days, the first day for livestock and the second day for flannels, brogues, linen and other non-livestock items. It was once described as a large concourse of people, in general well dressed and with more animation and apparent enjoyment of life, than in any set of people I saw. So, nothing much has changed, except that it did not take place this year - the first time since the 1760s. #OTD in 1863, Frederick Gutekunst took this picture of John Burns at his Gettysburg home. John Burns was an elderly citizen of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 that grabbed a musket and fought with the 150th Pennsylvania near the McPherson Farm and then with the 7th Wisconsin at the edge of the Herbst Woodlot. During the Union retreat, he was wounded and lay on the battlefield until early July 2. Union Lieutenant Frank Haskell, also present for the battle, wrote of his brief contact with Burns. I saw John Burns, the only citizen of Gettysburg who fought in the battle, and I asked him what troops he fought with. He said: O, I pitched in with them Wisconsin fellers. I asked what sort of men they were, and he answered: They fit terribly. To protest the visit of Queen Victoria to Dublin in 1897 Maud Gonne and artist activists including Alice Milligan organised a magic lantern projection in Parnell Street featuring images of eviction scenes on a gable wall. The protesters carried placards with statistics of famine deaths. The police baton-charged the crowd and one woman was killed. Then/Now Old Mill Site A mill has existed at this site as far back as 1757. For more than two centuries, it was a manufacturing staple for the area, producing wool, grist, cotton, and more, but by the 1990’s it was abandoned and mostly burned down.
