In 2017 I traveled to Java and Bali with #Gisèlevienne @estellehanania & #arcorenz on a marvelous research trip around dance, music and ceremonies, as part of the @europalia arts festival. Met Wukir and his crew in Jogjakarta at that time. Had a fucking blast with those great humans! Gisèle had a carte blanche with the festival and one event was a collaborative session culminating in a performance with Wukir and I at @kaaitheater Brussels early 2018. Rully arrived and it turned into a full blown Senyawa session. Was so much fun and I learned so much from these guys, making music together, the journey to Java and these experiences. Grateful for this life and the opportunities and experiences it grants us such as these. Hail Senyawa! Geoff has been part of the Wandas Arts Awards since its beginning. Like the years before, hes grateful to be recognized and nominated. Art is in my blood. My mother attended OCA (now OCAD University) in the 50s. My one sister a visual architect and cellist. My father was a civil engineer. I am a musician. I play the drums. But after highschool in 1975, I made the key decision to go to OCA. Now at age 65, Homes First has provided for me the last 10 years a safe, off the street home. As an individual who has never married, no children, best friends recently deceased, I’m case to the winds. We don’t get just one week. We don’t get just one month. It may be a highlighted hashtag during September, but it doesn’t stop when the posts and the conversations and the orange stories do. Suicide. You don’t get it until you get it. The first time I thought about suicide, I was seventeen. In the almost four years I’ve been married, I’ve had to sit my husband down to tell him I was suffocating under the temptation of it twice. I’ve had friends who have attempted it; I’ve been the one to drive the car to the psych hospital because suicide was inevitable for the people I loved. Suicide. The church struggles to address it because it feels so anti what the Good Book teaches us, and sometimes there are darknesses we don’t know how to talk about. Those are the darknesses we MUST talk about. Suicide. Those who live in suicide’s grasp are dubbed “selfish,” or “faithless,” and those who admit to having carried the torments of a suicidal mind are labeled “attention seeking,” and are lectured about how they have too much to live for to be “that sad.” Suicide. It doesn’t take just a week or a month for someone to talk themselves into suicide. Someone who struggles with suicidal thoughts can have a “bad day” or a “hard season,” where everything is a little bit harder, but they are still struggling with the battle of their own mind even when they are laughing with their best friend in the car or playing board games with their family. The mind of someone who struggles with suicidal thoughts doesn’t just “get better”— and while there are definitely good days and the thoughts aren’t always dark and twisty—the mind can still go there. So if your loved ones have come forward this week and said they are struggling with suicidal tendencies, don’t stop checking on them in November. Don’t make them feel like they should have “moved on” because they are smiling. That’s how we lose people—when we stop asking them how we can help. Get better at listening. Get better at being the one to start the conversation for the sake of the people hurting. Don’t make it just a week or a month. Be aware. Its been a while since I’ve officially said hello ✋ so wanted to take a moment and introduce myself:) I’m Rebecca Weller and I have been a painter for over 20 years. I studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and have spent much of the past two decades surrounded by tubes of glorious paint- and piles of canvases. A few years ago- I had the incredible opportunity to become the Visual Creative Director for Magnolia- so we packed up our life (and my studio 😅) in Ohio and moved to Waco, TX where I now live with my husband, and our 6 year old twins 💗. I have my studio space here on our property, and have been working on a new series of floral and bird paintings. At first sight, his paintings appear to be a random collection of traces of a creative process. However, the perception tilts when it turns out that the tape or the shreds of paper are painted trompe loeils. He uses these as a pictorial strategy to make the viewer aware of the creation process, through the illusion of the result.
