The Museum continually adds artifacts of significance to Tennessee history, art and culture to its collection. On the Stories blog (link in bio ☝️), read about some of our newest acquisitions obtained over the summer, such as a cart that was used on the Warioto Farm in Franklin, Tennessee; a self-portrait by painter Philip Perkins; and a painting by David Wright of Abraham Bledsoe (pictured), an enslaved man who was forced to journey from Virginia to the Upper Cumberland Region during the 1780s. He carried a firearm, hunted, and joined other settlers in armed conflicts with Southeastern Indians, where his skills and bravery were acknowledged and well regarded by chroniclers of the period. Bledsoe was bi-racial, which likely permitted him to obtain a higher status than other enslaved people of his time, but he still did not enjoy the same rights and freedoms as white settlers. - @tnstatemuseum on Instagram

Until you visit us, we invite you to look at a summer view from August 1886 by the painter Eugène Boudin in the painting Trouville, Les Parasols sur la Plage. . For over 30 years, Boudin has dedicated 300 paintings to beach sights. In most cases Trouville, a popular resort town in Normandy, where he used to spend his summer vacation. Boudin described the summer atmosphere and people in their fashionable periodical attire. Painting a very precise sky combined with upper-middle-class figures became him signature style of painting, which was later adopted by the Impressionists, led by Claude Monet, who was Boudins student and under his influence began to paint outdoors. . Waiting for Her Man 30x40 A new piece headed for the C.M. Russell Museum Art in Action event. This one is a little different for me. Delivering a painting last year to a collector near Jackson Hole I happened across this sight. Immediately I pulled over the truck jumped out with the camera and commenced shooting. The clouds where putting on a display of hide and seek light requiring lots of shots. Looking out across the sage flats I was overcome with the vision of a native encampment and someone waiting. Charles Russell often worked that way and one never knows when the inspiration kicks in. Thats all it took and I had to paint it. Dame Laura Knight — Spring (1916/1920). Oil on canvas. • Dame Laura Knight (1877 – 1970) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolours, etching, engraving and drypoint. In her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain; her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. In 1929 she was created a Dame, and in 1936 became the first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy. Her large retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1965 was the first for a woman. Knight was known for painting amidst the world of the theatre and ballet in London, and for being a war artist during the Second World War. Looks like our Tornado Over Kansas has some attention at MidlandUSA Radio Corporation in Kansas City, the nation’s #1 manufacturer of NOAA Weather Radios. Their meteorologist/spokesperson Bruce Jones has a long standing interest in the painting, and shared that a print of the painting that was in his childhood home inspired him to become a meteorologist. A new Tornado Over Kansas poster is heading to Kansas City for the Midland Radio team! Thank you, Mr. Jones, for sharing these comments with us: The painting tells such a frightening story and yet the Mom and Dad ( certainly the latter) always gave me assurance that the kids and the pets would be okay. Curry also did a good job on the tornado and its surrounding clouds, at a time when the details of tornado formation were not well understood. His portrayal of the funnel cloud and its position in relation to the parent thunderstorm is right on. Even what’s now known as the “clear slot”, a slight erosion of nearby clouds caused by downdraft winds, is portrayed accurately. He must have studied several photos and astutely recreated a real twister. For all of its scientific integrity and the sheer terror, familial cohesiveness, and kinetic drama of the situation, it ranks as my favorite painting. It was the prediction of a priest in 1774 that the apocalypse was near due to celestial body alignment. That drove Eisenga to build it. The priest caused a turmoil and Eise was able to put that to rest.
