In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 8, 1934, the luxury cruise ship known as the SS Morro Castle caught fire off the coast of the New Jersey shore. En route from Havana to New York, a total of 137 passengers and crew members were killed in the fire. The still-burning ship eventually beached near Convention Hall and became a major tourist attraction until it was towed away for scrap many months later. The fire aboard the Morro Castle was a catalyst for improved shipboard fire safety, leading to the use of fire retardant materials, automatic fire doors, and ship-wide fire alarms. Greater attention and emphasis was also placed on fire drills and life boat procedures. After nearly 4 years in Little Stonegate we have been moved on from our corner unit to find new pastures.
