It’s a tuna! It’s a baby whale! No, it’s… AN OCEAN SUNFISH!! We’re excited to welcome a Mola mola back to our Open Sea Exhibit! This young mola comes to us from Carmel Bay. They’re only 3-4 years old and weigh about 34kg/75lbs. We’re the only aquarium in North America to exhibit these sensitive animals, thanks to our proximity to their habitat. Sunfish are temporary guests at the Aquarium. Our dedicated sunfish aquarists train them to swim over to us to be hand-fed a specialized “mola sausage” that mimics their wild meals of jellies, shrimp and other invertebrates. Once they grow to be around 230kg/500 pounds, or if their behavior changes letting us know they’re ready to go, we release them back to the wild with tags allowing us to find out how large they’ve grown should someone come across them again. Mighty molas are often seen in Monterey Bay from whale watching boats, especially when jellies are close to the coast, and beachgoers commonly find carcasses of young ones washed up on the beach, usually after a sea lion had some mola munchies. Ocean sunfish are found in temperate seas around the world and two separate species can be found in Monterey Bay: The common sunfish Mola mola and the recently discovered Hoodwinker sunfish, Mola tecta. Famous for being the heaviest bony fishes in the ocean, multiple Mola species reach 2,300kg/5,000lbs, and the title goes back and forth between the bumphead sunfish M. alexandrini and M. mola as new leviathans are discovered.) Hoy me di cuenta que hace mucho que no les contaba sobre alguna especie de pez, así que aprovechando de que son mis animales favoritos quiero contarles sobre estos que no tienen tanta prensa Se los conoce con el nombre científico de Emblemaria hypacanthus y fueron descriptos formalmente por primera vez en 1889. Forman parte de la familia Chaenopsidae, que probablemente no conozcan pero ya les contaré más sobre ella en el futuro. Habitan únicamente en el Golfo de California, en el Océano Pacífico. Suelen estar asociados a la vida de arrecife, formando sus guaridas en los tubos de gusanos poliquetos y con los restos calcáreos de distintos moluscos Viven en aguas poco profundas (entre 1 y 10 metros) y presentan un pequeño tamaño, llegando a medir hasta unos 5 centímetros de largo. Se alimentan de zooplancton marino que capturan en la columna de agua. En esta especie los machos presentan una coloración mucho más llamativa que las hembras. Over the past 32 years sharks have been brought a whole lot of glory with their own “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel. Reaching over 35 million viewers every year, all of this attention comes with both good and bad and the consequences of shark week have become more controversial in the eyes of conservationists. . The fearful mentality and constant talk about “shark attacks” however, has had some negative impacts on the way that sharks are widely perceived. In a world where over 100 million sharks are killed each year and populations are rapidly declining it is more important than ever that we quickly shift from the unrealistic monsters we make them out to be to a more accurate depiction of the animals that are the backbone of marine ecosystems. . What can you do to help? Let @discovery know that you understand the importance of sharks and how imperative it is that a conservation mentality is applied to shark week. The truth is that if we want to continue to have a shark week to celebrate at all then we need to learn how to appreciate sharks for the beautiful, diverse, and essential animals that they are rather than the terrifying creatures that humans have created in the media. Waiting for dinner like... Went on a dive the other day with @nautisub_san_vito in Sicily, Italy. Virginia and Roberto run the dive center in San Vito lo Capo, if you happen to be around, you should pop in to say hi. It was the first time diving in the Mediterranean Sea and, being used to Caribbean and cenotes, everything was new and exciting. A ton of colorful nudibranchs, gorgonian sea fans, sponges, sea breams and octopi hidden in wall crevices. Scatterd on the sea bed is pretty common to see anchors and pottery jars, that once carried olive oil and wine, some dated back to the 4th BC. Wow! On the dive I met @daniele70corsini, the talented photographer behind this shot, coming along for some macro adventures. The wonderful Mediterranean blue is full of wonders, and history! El Nino has brought unusually warm waters up the California coast this year, and with them tropical species including hammerheads! Octopuses inhabit various regions of the ocean, including coral reefs, pelagic waters, and the seabed; some live in the intertidal zone and others at abyssal depths. Most species grow fast, mature early and are short-lived. During breeding, the male uses a specially adapted arm to deliver a bundle of sperm directly into the females mantle cavity, after which he becomes senescent and dies. The female deposits fertilised eggs in a den and cares for them until they hatch, after which she also dies. Strategies to defend themselves against predators include the expulsion of ink, the use of camouflage and threat displays, their abilities to jet quickly through the water and hide, and even through deceit. Happy Shark Awareness Day! Today we want to celebrate some of the lesser known species of shark native to the coastal waters of California. Like brown smoothound, soupfin, spiny dogfish, leopard, and swell sharks, all abundant in California waters. Most shark species are not dangerous to humans and the beautiful angel shark is one of them. If you were a small fish cruising near the sandy bottom you COULD be in danger though. The angel shark is an ambush predator with a lightening quick gulping reflex. It lays on the bottom motionless and covered in sand all day waiting for an opportunity to surprise and snap up any unsuspecting fish swimming by. The prey preferences of these smaller species of sharks typically include small fish and invertebrates, such as shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and some mollusks. 🌀 This Moray Eel seems to be Green.. but actually is Brown 🤓💙🐍 ––——––——––—— ––——––——––—— 🔘 #SavingTheWaves ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They only looks green because, like many morays, the animal wards off predators by secreting a layer of mucus that covers its skin. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This slime contains various toxins, including one which destroys red blood cells. Octopuses have a closed circulatory system, where the blood remains inside blood vessels. Octopuses have three hearts; a systemic heart that circulates blood round the body and two branchial hearts that pump it through each of the two gills. The systemic heart is inactive when the animal is swimming and thus it tires quickly and prefers to crawl. Octopus blood contains the copper-rich protein haemocyanin to transport oxygen. This makes the blood very viscous and it requires considerable pressure to pump it round the body; octopuses blood pressures can exceed 75 mmHg. In cold conditions with low oxygen levels, haemocyanin transports oxygen more efficiently than haemoglobin.
