The House of Representatives passed a $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief bill Thursday evening in a 214-207 vote. Now it has to pass by senate, which is likely to happen because it’s not even clear if Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will be willing to bring the bill to the Senate floor for a vote since a significant portion of his party doesn’t support it. Lin Wood, an attorney for 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, threatened to sue former Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday on behalf of his client for defamation after Biden tweeted a video that identified Rittenhouse as a white supremacist. There is no evidence that Rittenhouse is a white supremacist. He currently faces murder charges in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for shooting three rioters last month, two of whom died. Rittenhouse has argued, citing video, that he acted in self-defense. Biden’s video played audio from Tuesday night’s first presidential debate — in which, ironically, President Donald Trump said that he would denounce white supremacists — and claimed in the accompanying text that Trump had refused to do so. ($1 million of that would come from the Brooklyn Borough president’s budget, already pledged by Eric Adams.) This is a tough year for budget requests of any form, and the organization is asking supporters to press their city council members in support. . There are other places that take cans. But only SureWeCan has a mission to remove the stigma in working as a collector. “I have noticed over the years that we are treated as subhuman, and that’s exactly the opposite of who and what we are,” said Pierre Simmons, a Brooklyn canner who presented this morning: “We’re independent workers.” He spoke alongside a state senator, a congressman, a boro prez + a former governor of Chicago. PIG TRIAL 3 ✊🏽 The @bcspca not only failed to fight for the animal victims at Excelsior Hog Farm, but they also took it upon themselves to report the whistleblower to the police, despite the whistleblower providing clear evidence of multiple instances of criminal animal cruelty. Several instances of criminal animal cruelty have been documented at Excelsior Hog Farm (Abbotsford, BC) in the past year including workers repeatedly kicking pigs, electric prodding in the faces of pigs, tail-docking, and castrating piglets without pain relief... and much more. Despite the overwhelming evidence, ZERO charges have been recommended against Excelsior Hog Farm. Instead, animal activists @amysoranno, @ethically_fit , @roysasano, and @geoffregier are facing 21 counts of indictable offences (highest level in Canadian courts) for exposing this criminal animal cruelty to the public. . . Imagine you woke up one day and all of a sudden your empathy turned into apathy. Are you now justified to cause harm to others? Of course not. Just because YOU changed, doesnt mean anything changed for those sentient beings and their ability to suffer and feel pain. Those are objective facts about subjective beings, and someones lack of care towards other beings holds no relevance to determine whether or not they deserve basic rights. . No one has a right to impose their will onto other beings based on how they feel about them. Can stretching before training decrease muscle growth? - A 2017 study used a within-subject design to answer this question. The subject performed unilateral knee extensions for 4 sets to failure, twice per week for 10 weeks. For each subject, one leg performed those knee extensions without prior stretching, and one leg performed those knee extensions following some pretty intense static stretching before the first set: 2 sets of 25 seconds, at a discomfort level of 8 (on a 0-10 scale). - Strength gains were similar between conditions, but the legs in the non-stretching condition experienced larger increases in vastus lateralis cross-sectional area: 12.7 ± 7.2% v. 7.4 ± 3.7%. In fact, all but one of the subjects experienced more quad growth in their non-stretching leg. This difference in hypertrophy may have been driven by the effects of stretching on performance: subjects averaged almost seven more reps per session with their non-stretching leg. - The biggest takeaway ISN’T that stretching is bad. The biggest takeaway is that any stretching you do pre-training should not be intense enough or take place close enough to your working sets to negatively affect performance. DEARBORN, Mich. (WDIV) A national Arab American foundation, based in Dearborn, has raised more than $180,000 to help support the ongoing relief efforts in Lebanon following the deadly explosion in August. The Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) joined an effort by the Lebanon Relief Project, a nationally coordinated initiative led by the American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL) and the Ghassan and Manal Saab Foundation—to urgently airlift critical medical and pharmaceutical supplies and equipment to Lebanon in the aftermath of the explosion. Since the explosion, the continued fundraising efforts benefitting the Lebanon Relief Project through CAAP’s Disaster Relief Fund have resulted in over $180,000 raised so far. Funds have been used to help the Lebanon Relief Project airlift over $12.7 million in high value medications and supplies to Beirut on August 24, and most recently, over $6 million on September 29. Due to the critical need and high demand, the group now has plans to airlift more supplies in the near future. 100% of all donations raised through CAAP’s continued fundraising efforts will go towards airlifting essential supplies and equipment and supporting relief efforts in Lebanon. This latest project builds on the success of the recent CAAP campaign launched on August 5, which resulted in a $75,155 grant to the Lebanese Red Cross to support their on-the-ground relief work. The blast in Beirut on Aug. 4 killed more than 175 people, injured at least 6,000 and left tens of thousands homeless. Even before the explosion, Lebanon was dealing with increasing poverty, economic collapse and corruption, while in the midst of a pandemic. It’s still not known what sparked the fire that ignited nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate that were stored for years in Beirut’s port next to densely populated residential areas. This modelling from the University of Melbourne and University of New England shows what’s likely to happen if we eased too quickly, with the numbers too high. It takes into account the data and current settings we have in place in Victoria – things like case numbers, face coverings, and restrictions. If we removed the Stay at Home restrictions when daily case numbers were averaging 25, theres more than a 60 per cent chance wed be back in lockdown by Christmas. When the stakes are so high, its a risk we just cant take. The modelling also shows that if we drive daily numbers down to five before taking the next step – that likelihood drops to just 3 per cent. I know everyone wants this over as soon as possible. So do I. But there’s one thing worse than having restrictions in place – and that’s coming out too fast. Having two weeks of fun. Case numbers explode. And then you’re straight back into lockdown. Yo-yoing in and out, with businesses opening and closing, is just about the worst scenario possible.
