Egg allergy is NOT a contraindication to receive the influenza vaccine. Period. Hard stop. With over 50!!! clinical trials all showing safety and no increased risk for an allergic reaction, guidelines changed a few years ago. Yet I still hear old concerns from some pediatricians & families every year. The influenza vaccine is developed using chick egg fibroblasts and it was PREVIOUSLY thought this could introduce egg protein into the vaccine. Hence, it was PRESUMED that anyone with egg allergy should not receive it. It was never studied or shown to be harmful, but avoided out of caution. Then, the H1N1 influenza pandemic happened in 2009. Children were at very real risk for severe illness without being vaccinated. That spurned dozens of trials to see if the prior assumptions were actually true. Turns out, they were not. Even people with a history of life threatening allergic reactions to egg can receive the influenza vaccine without precautions. The nasal version has been studied as well and appears to be safe (makes sense) but formal guidelines have yet to ‘officially’ clear that version.
